As the battery is discharged the electrolyte goes down as water is used to make sulfate. When the bat is charged electrolyte goes up as the charging process converts the sulfate back into electrolyte. Adding water to a discharged battery the way you did will overfill it and spill acid when fully charged. If discharged only add a little bit of water to just cover the plates. Then charge fully. Check specific gravity and top off with water when charged. Thanks for the vid.
Definitely hit the thumbs up man. Very helpful video. I have a 29DC as well that is only two years old, but starting to lose power. Appreciate the tips.
cleaning the top of your battery is not going to impact charge/discharge ability. Better to fill with a turkey baster AFTER IT IS CHARGED or if very low water, fill just part way with water and then top off when fully charged.
You shouldn't have added the water that way. You washed the dust from the cap bay down into the battery. Not Good. Just saying Next time get yourself a hydrometer and use it to add the water to cells. You can also check the status of each cell as well. that way you have a really good idea of how your battery is doing.
I buy the clear bottles us Chefs use for oils. The clear dollar ones at Walmart. I keep water in there and fill them as needed one by one. You definitely got dirt in the cells. Haha Newbies.
Helpful vid, thanks. I am new to boating, do i need to recharge my marine battery or does it charge automatically when the the motor is running? I am only using one battery so i'm not using it for anything other than the motor. Thanks for any advice
1. I would vacuum the dirt underneath the caps and then use the rag. You don't want all that dust&gunk in the chambers, 2. the way you fill up is not the best: because of different level of fluid and the resulting different acid ratio, better fill each chamber separately with a desulfation charge Does anybody know what the typical recommended DoD of this Walmart Marine Batteries in % are or at which voltage you should stop using? Thanks for the video
I have the same battery and just put it to use tried charging it with a 4amp charger and it’s been 30 hours and it’s still not fully charged. I only used it once! Wondering if it’s the battery or my charger cuz I was hearing a bubbling when I was charging it I heard that’s not good in sealed acid battery’s any input would be nice cuz I’m pretty sure it shouldn’t take more than a full day charging at 13.5v for my battery to not be fully charged
I’m not even sure if I’m gonna get a reply but I do need help. Reese and I have a battery that is not holding a charge. I’ll charge it and it will die really fast. I was wondering do I have to change the whole battery acid out and if I do, what is the ratio for sulfuric acid in distilled water?
The Voltage charts are for at rest or with loads? I've been using a really cheap $100 Excide 115AH deep cycle battery as my starter and house battery for about a year and half. I've taken it down to 11.5v about 50 nights. I am wondering how long it will last. One number that confuses me is Reserve capacity. If my battery is rated 115AH, I presume that means i have about 700WH of usable but have never been able to achieve that. Also If they claim it has a 205 minute reserve capacity @25amp, what does that REALLY mean.. not really (205*12*25)/60 = 1025WH of usable right?? How is it possible that a 12 fridge that is consuming about 40watts took my battery from 12.6v to 12.1v from 9pm to 6am?
They're advertised as maintenance free, so they MAY have been designed with electrolyte levels far above the plates, to allow for quite a bit of loss and hopefully last the life of the battery. I'm not sure about these batteries, though.,
Bent Rod Bassin not that I don’t believe you but, WHY then do they call it “maintenance free”?? That’s really the only significant maintenance associated with a battery.🤷🏻♂️
TOMULATOR: my question exactly. I am so darn confused and frustrated. I cannot get the same answer twice from You Tube or store clerks. . Two clerks at separate stores said do not add water to a battery, only sulfuric acid. One clerk said a maintenance free Lead Acid flooded battery should not be opened to add anything. He said "Once they die then they're dead." But I thought even dead batteries can be recharged. Do maintenance free batteries never lose water? Help me please.

My battery is the same one everstart that you had and I have used it for 2 years now got it brand new and charged it a lot and topped off water a lot also but yesterday I was getting 0 power to my trolling motor and I checked water and it’s good so I plugged it up and the positive is sparking any idea why?
Four years ago. If those batteries are meant for driving a trolling motor and electronics, then the proper way to maintain them, today, would be to give them to someone you don't like very much and go buy lithium iron-phosphate replacements. Half the weight, twice the usable power, and 5 times as many charge cycles.
@@BentRodBassin - Not sure if you've looked recently, but nowhere near 5x the cost, anymore. Compare a quality AGM with an LFP, today. Lead is dead, for trolling motors. Still the right way to go for cranking batteries...at least for now.
@@BentRodBassin Yeah, I feel you on that. When I built my two oldest 100AH batteries, they each cost almost twice as much as I would pay today, for one off the shelf. With sodium-ion production ramping up, and taking over some of the demand for lithium in EV's, look for the price of LFP cells (and assembled batteries) to keep going down.
Just cover the lead cores. Shouldn't be topped off completely bc if the battery over heats it could blow the caps off. Just like anything with liquids, they need room for expansion. Just fill till it covers the lead cores
Every battery video has this comment somewhere. The battery casing is plastic. Plastic does not conduct electricity. Totally safe to put it on concrete.

How much water do you put in a battery? What if you put too much water in it?

Ya that's strange, sounds like a bad battery?
Ziggy Zuko it doesnt matter how many times you used it. It must be charge at least once a month otherwise sulfurcation would damage the plate inside.
It’s because you have to charge the battery first before topping off with water

Store them in the garage off the floor with a maintaining charger connected.
