Supreme and High Court Judges have to retire at 70 here in Australia. Ordinary lawyers have to retire at 79. Why? Public indemnity insurance cuts off to lawyers at 80 and you can't get a practicing certificate without it.

The Supreme Court should also be designed like the lower courts -- many judges. Why do we always have the same judges hearing every case? There should be many more judges in a Supreme Court "pool" and for each case, the judges should be selected at random. And when I say "at random", I mean truly at random; think of the machines you may see on the news for choosing lottery numbers, where the person presses a button and a numbered ball is pushed to the top. This would also have the added benefit of allowing more cases to be heard within any given time frame.

I agree. I really like Joe Biden, but look at any video of him when he was a senator years ago and he was a lot sharper. I'm a senior, and I support anyone who wants to work to a ripe old age, but RBG was 87 and Breyer will turn 83 this year. There are plenty of people who are sharp until 100, but most of us start to lose some brain cells after 70! It's unfortunate that some people need to work to put food on the table and pay for medication, but a Supreme Court justice gets a very generous pension for life. If I'm not mistaken, a justice gets his or her full salary so Breyer would get more than $277,000 plus benefits. That's at least $250,000 more than most seniors get from Social Security!

We shouldn't have to wait hundreds of years for answers on constitutional questions because the Supreme Court is permanently understaffed and can only hear a limited number of annual cases.
