  • Today i had fun testing the Wen track saw i bought from Amazon. Track saws are great for some woodworking projects and i have been wanting one for a while. It is not a tool that is used daily i didn't want to spend a lot of money on it so i tested the cheapest saw i could find. this new video serious i will be testing all kinds of tools for my new shop and sharing my thoughts and opinions on each tool.

    About -
I produce 2-3 videos every week covering shop tips and tricks, money-saving hacks, inventions, and woodworking projects. Some projects are simple, some are complex, and some are really weird - or just fun. Experimentation and playfulness are important, and woodworking should never feel like a chore.
A lot of my projects are designed to make your workshop more efficient, so I have plans for a lot of woodworking jigs and shop-built tools. I’ve made a lot of drill-powered machines, from a bandsaw to a lathe to a fully automatic slingshot crossbow to a t-shirt folder. My creations run the gamut from practical must-have shop tools to ridiculously fun family projects and everything in between.

Prescription when joining two rails: leave a tiny gap between the rails when connecting them with connector rods. Use a long straight reference to get the rails straight, and then tighten the connecting rods.

Not all of us can afford the top of the line toys/tools, although I recognize the value of spending a little more when it's something you're going to put to heavy use. Peter Millard is a retired cabinet maker, he uses almost exclusively sheetgoods and use a plunge saw almost to the exclusion of his tablesaw. He does use a Festool MFT. He tests cheap saws, and has a selection of videos about making your own MFT. His table has a hinge to keep the guide square, and the other side has an adjustable support.

Same saw as the Grizzly, I like mine and have a diablo blade in it. Dust collection is ok with a shop vac and separator. If you get the grizzly accessory kit you get two clamps that are copies of the festool clamp an additional joining rail for $23, those clamps work well on the Paulk work bench or a home made MFT type top . Watch the lock screws they tend to work themselves out and get lost, easy enough to make replacements with a 1/4 20 bolt and hack saw.

Combine a table saw with jigs, and you have a saw that can do things no track saw willl ever be able to do.
That being said, I just bought a circular saw that supported tracks (Bosch GKS 18 V-Li), as I don't really need the plunge feature, a couple of tracks (70+140cm) and a couple of festool speed clamps when they were on sale on Black Friday.

The thing about joining any track brand is not to jamb them together but leave slight gap; then use two adapters and do not overtighten as that can leave dents.. Better blade; cut 1/4 inch off plunger spring ; plexiglass shield tapped and screwed to blade removal window and it greatly improves the cut and dust collection. Glide tape on bottom and glides smoothly This is same as Grizzly and many others. Bearings are quite on mine. 154 dollars ;great buy .Also the track clamps are cheap at less 13 dollars pair and track doesn't need much tightening to stay. Good review on stock saw.

I was told that saws with the blade on the right was for weekender because the blade needs to be as far away for the operator as possible to mitigate possible injuries. i

Can you comment on how it compares to a circular saw with a door-board? The Wen circular saw is $50, and you can make several door boards out of $20 worth of hardboard, so for less than $70 you would have a sort of ghetto track saw. If I understood you correctly, your track saw and extra track cost $250. What advantages does that extra $180 buy you over a circular saw with several door boards?

    • @brtrimmer132

You have a chance of cutting offline with a doorboard the fact that the tracksaw is captured lessens the chance of ruining a cut on a $50 sheet of ply.

I've never had good luck with a circular saw and straight edge.
I have recently purchased a battery operated circular saw then made a track for it. I screwed a thin piece of plywood to the bottom of the saw and a section of T-track alinged with the blade while also making a dado in a straight edge for the T-track to ride in. It works like the expensive track saws except for the bump in the track is on the base of the saw and the bump rides inside the track. Works very good. I used a battery saw because I already had the batteries, only had to buy a tool-only saw and I'm not limited by a cord or have to worry about it interfering with my cutting flow.

I've got one of these and it works great. I've cut about 30 sheets of 3/4" plywood for cabinets, using this saw. I did have to superglue the rubber edge onto the track when I first got it, and have also repaired it once since then. But the superglue worked fine. The self adhesive on the rubber is worthless...So, just plan on gluing it....no biggie...just use a few spring clamps to hold the rubber in place. Also, I wish that it came with a second connector for the track. Mine's been fine without it. But, it would feel more positively locked together with a second connector. Also, I wish that it came with hold down clamps. For any kind of finished wood, the track can easily creep off your line. A couple of hold downs can fix this. I made some out of scrap plywood and a couple of bolts and wingnuts. They work, but I still plan on getting some better hold downs. All in all, for the price, this track saw is well worth what I paid. Nothing else was close to as nice for the money. Considering that it comes with the saw, this was not much more expensive than just building my own track.

Thanks Izzy for your review of this saw. I would like to see more reviews like this. I see many tool reviews online where they don't even use the tool, just compare the specs. Those reviews are worthless. Seeing someone actually use the tool and showing it cutting through thick white oak, plywood, etc... that's the type of review that helps! Awesome! I think the tool manufacturers could benefit from these as well. They need to see what adjustments their end users need to make to be productive with their products, and how we use the tools. The only thing I might add is to lay out what's included in the box after discarding packing materials. Some brands actually include extra brushes, blades, wrenches, cases or a method to store things. Convenience storage of small items may not sound like much, but I constantly loose those pieces!

I have and or have used several wen tools. 7/10 is pretty accurate for them across the board. Very good real world review Izzy. Most of us are going to live with things like that bearing chatter and not blink an eye. Yea, it’s annoying. But you didn’t pay 400+ for a tool you use maybe once a month

Just found this review (I think). WEN stuff fills a real niche. I’ve owned a bunch of it - if you’re going to use them once or twice a month they’re a great value. They cut all kinds of corners so in a production environment they’re not going to stay accurate under rigorous daily use but if you’re a DIYer you’ll get a decently accurate tool at 1/4 the price of a “pro” tool. I own a WEN oscillating sander, a small drill press, a hand-held electric plane and a breadbox planer - they’ve all been solid, but I only use them a few X per year. I also own name brand versions of everything but the sander. Are they better? Maybe long haul sure- but I can torture my WEN stuff on work I don’t want expensive tools to touch - and throw it out if it gets damaged. But so far have not been able to kill any of the WEN stuff so I’d buy their tracksaw without hesitation for DIY use.

Now I did drop the cash on the festool track saw and it is amazing but to be honest..I wish I waited a few more months bc I would have probably just went with the cordless Makita track saw. I have both festool and makita tracks..basically same thing with a different name on them but they join together just like the tracks in your video. And I would say 100% you should have received 2 guide bars for each joint. That's what really helps sq your tracks up. I would still check them but 2 bars at least cut your problem in half. They have to choose models that require some compromises in quality simply based on cost. So it’s nice to know the pros and cons of lower end tools to determine if the compromises are worth it.

often it's a case of not "can't afford" but rather "don't want to afford". A lot of people are DIY'ers who use a tool every once in a while. We don't need something we can pass along to great grandchildren, just something that does the job well and at a reasonable price for the foreseable future.

I have one of these, it is definitely the gears. Most circular saws have gears to slow the motor from router speeds (24k-36k rpm) to circular saw speeds.(3600-5800 rpm). You can really feel the slop when you wiggle the blade's rotation back and forth without turning the motor, indicating a large amount of lash in the gears. I really don't think it'll be a problem, but my complaint is that the plunge pivot on mine is very sloppy allowing the blade to trail somewhat sideways if you don't hold it perfectly consistently.
