I agree. As Namibian conservationist Garth Owen-Smith said, many poachers are like conservationists - they like being outside in the wild, but unfortunately they just don't know what impact their work has. When they become conservationists, they know all those methods used by poachers so their knowledge of that can be used for good.

Those poachers just care about their profit. they become conservationists for salary, not because they care for the animals.

Why are you proud? Everywhere I see comments like this. Someone from a certain part of the world does something great and all the freeloaders who did nothing are "proud" to be from that country. That's not how credit works. Get up and do things to make yourself proud. Not hating on you, just saying that you can achieve more and do great things too.

@@iLoveTurtlesHaha Anyone can be proud that people from their country are trying to help an issue, that's not for you to decide. Plus you're assuming they haven't when volunteer work with these animals isn't uncommon. I've done it a few times while I lived in Trinidad. Are you achieving great things by "not hating" on youtube?

And now here in Trinidad we have more than one turtle watching sites where persons bring their families to educate them on the leatherback turtles and how we can help them. It really is a beautiful thing. The last time I went however, we had a major problem with seaweed. It was blocking the turtles from coming on the beach to lay their eggs but they hired tractors to clear areas on the beach to allow them to come. Amazing work. Hope you guys can visit sometime.😄

Well, every single human only does something out of selfishness. We only have selfish reasons to do something. Even being "selfless" is done for selfish reasons because it makes us feel good to do it. With that said, nothing is wrong with doing something for selfish reasons if it benefits someone or the planet. :)

    • @MylotheZooLovingScientist

curi0 Very eloquently stated. I think that's one of the main problems threatening conservation efforts. So many people are so detached from nature - no matter how many documentaries they see or books they read, it's harder for people without the inherent interest in it to care about causes like these because they don't understand how they're connected to the natural world, they don't experience it in their daily lives and thus don't know how these issues can affect them.

If people need to eat, that is the first priority. It is more important than conservation. It's easy for people in the first world, who live in utter excess, to see the situation from their narrow point of view. The best way is truly to give people a better alternative. No one would eat turtle meat over a t-bone steak. They did the right thing here.
