Another approach would be: - add drumsticks/drumstick leaves/yin choi/snake gourd along with split pigeon peas to a boil till the lentils are done - add kashmiri chilly powder and turmeric and salt as per taste - add finely blended coconut paste(grated frozen ones seem to be best in BC at least) instead of coconut milk - add tempering of mustard, whole kashmiri red chillies (after toastng over the cooktop till it gets a slight char) and shallots. I prefer coconut oil but canola or vegetable oil is fine too but olive oil in this would be too dominant flavor This recipe takes about similar time but does not call for any other condiments like cardamom or cloves or cumin seeds, or garnishing with cilantro coz the tempering is the garnish. Tomatoes optional. More of a savoury (though heat level in this is mild) than a sweet dish.
Looks delicious! I like that you don’t skimp on the rice or curry. Is the coconut overwhelming or just a hint. I’m not a huge fan of coconut, but I’d like to try this.

I have made this a few times now. It's always so delicious. For those of you who might not try this b/c you don't have all the separate ingredients, here are my substitutions. They haven't impacted the flavor profiles for me. I use a can of Rotel or store brand tomatoes and chilis instead of the individual items listed in the recipe. I rarely have whole spices on hand, so I used ground cumin coriander and cardamom. I throw that into the pan when I saute the onions. Any type of white rice is best so as not to compete with the curry, but I have used wild rice in a pinch. Again not as tasty as white but it'll do in a pinch. This recipe is fairly quick and very easy. Don't wait to try making it as Yeung Man really knows what he's doing.
His recipie is basically just a variant of Dhal. You can get a basic Dhal curry just by Lentils (of any kind) and Garam Masala - which is already a mixture of many of the other spices in his recipie. Onions, garlic, coconut milk and tomatoes are all just recommended but optional ingredients.

You are doing a great job for the society❤️ I was a hard core non vegetarian till I visited a farm and witnessed the horror of the dairy industry. The cow is inseminated painfully every 6 months so that calf is born. The calves are taken away immediately without a single drop of milk. The male calves are transported to the slaughterhouse to be killed on the very day. This process continues for some years till the cow is completely exhausted and later sold for meat. That’s the milk we consume. I literally had sleepless nights after watching the cows, their udders become so big they can’t even move. And they run to save their babies from going to the slaughterhouse. Thank you for these recepies so that people can choose compassion in their plate instead of pain.

This is the first thing I cooked from your channel, and it definitely wont be the last. Thank you for your wonderful channel.😊
I serendipitously encountered this video today and made this for dinner. I added dried currants just because I like them. I don't often encounter recipes that work perfectly, but this one sure does. Fabulous. Thank you.
Red lentils are so satisfying. I used to make this for my husband and we'd top it with fried sliced onions with some toasted spices (cumin, mustard seed) It's a full meal and great on a cold day.
Just been told in recent days that I am coeliac (UK spelling). My heart dropped as I love cooking. But I have no need to worry. Your channel has so many gluten free recipes - not by design but incidental. I have been signed up to you for some time...no need to change. You have no idea how reassuring that is. Thank you.
I've tried maybe a dozen different red lentil curry recipes and this is hands down the BEST! I've made it several times already and I can't get enough of it.. everybody loves it (my non-vegan loved ones also!)! such a beautiful recipe, full of flavor, depth and with all the cozy vibes! highly recommend :)
This is so relaxing, from the ultra clean setting, the soft voice and the wonderful music ! I love dal, but this recipe makes it even better. I loved everything about this video presentation . Thank you, Yeung Man .
Hands down the best lentil dish I have ever had. It had so many flavours that blended together so well. I could not stop eating it. This is definitely going on my weekly menu❤
Just made lentil curry today so I went here searching for some other variations. And I have to say that I am amazed about Your energy. The way You cook and speak is so inspiring.
Thank you for the nice music while you are preparing the meal. I also like the no nonsense approach you have to showing us what to do without any fluff. I also like that usually your only extra tools are a pot or skillet, a knife and cutting board. I do not have a-lot of gadgets so I appreciate that you use this approach. Thank you for the delicious recipes.
I just made this dish, wow wow wow it was delicious! The prep took a lot of time, but it cooks up very quick. Well worth the prep time. Thank you for this!
Made it today and though I have eaten various red lentil dishes, this recipe is now my favorite! Soooooo good!!! I even shared some samples with my neighbors so they could try it. :) Delicious. I just added a bit of lemon juice when I served it, alongside the coriander. Yummy. Thanks. ❤
Thank you so much for this delightful recipe. I purchased everything I needed to make it (including a mortar and pestle) over the last week. I finally made the recipe today and let me tell you, my home smells heavenly. The flavors are perfection! It was fun to make and even more fun to eat!
This is so much like sri lankan way.. We cook like this except the part that we boil lentils separately and add to the other ingredients after boiling.. And in some variations we add mustard seeds too..and we add curry leaves too.. Coconut milk/cream+curry leaves is a must in sri lanka.

One of the best recipes I’ve ever tried, this was perfection. I served it as is with the rice and cilantro but added avocado as well. I didn’t have coriander so used a little bit of curry powder to compensate. Used coconut cream instead of coconut milk (what I had). Minor changes. Overall Amazing! Everyone loved it!

I don't cook dal nearly often enough any more- back in my grad student days I would make a pot every week and eat it for 3-4 meals. It's so versatile- you can add any veggie you want after you've brought the dal to a boil, and it will be perfectly cooked when the dal is ready. I particularly like green beans or okra. I think the taste is better the second day!
I've just watched this made by a lady and I much prefer this version. Between the two videos, one can see how easy it is to make this curry & the varied ingredients one can use. I shall definitely make this over the Easter period, I bought a huge bag of red lentils yesterday, my favourite of all the lentils.
We have this with every meal in Sri Lankan homes. It is a lot simpler the way we do it. We use turmeric, curry leaves, onion and chilies (green/dry red) to build the flavors. With coconut milk ofcourse. It is never eaten with just rice, It is an accompaniment it with atleast 3 more curries along with rice.
Just made this dish, and it turned out great! Very filling and tasty. I had to wait to get some of the spices, but turned out as awesome as I thought it would be. The wait was well worth it. Thanks for sharing.
I've cooked this curry 4 or 5 times now! Started with the Moroccan Chikpea Stew. Your channel is such a blessing and has improved my life tremendously. Thank you so much!
I love lentil curry. I like mine a little bit soupy. Instead of using coconut milk, I use coconut cream to make it more delicious. Thank you for making this video, Wil.
@@janetlindsey456 Well usually in india this is more liquidy to consume with rice. But if u plan to make this recipe I say it'll go good wid Roti/Naan which is an indian flat bread since u can hold it easier. U can check videos on how to make them it isn't really that hard. I'll recommend Naan tho instead of roti. Just a personal preference. And also instead of olive oil I'll recommend using Ghee(clarified butter). They bring out better flavours. I wud hav recommended Mustard oil but it's kinda hard to handle so go with ghee or any neutral oil like peanut or sunflower oil. Don't do olive oil
This is just what I needed! I've never made curry but I've had to increase my fiber so I am making lots of legume dishes. I will be making this soon! It looks devine🤩
I always appreciate your videos as they are enjoyable to watch a chef prepare food with integrity and soul. Because it is just myself and I wanted a small portion I pretty much cut it in half and used one of the small 5 plus ounces of coconut milk. Also because I didn't have the whole spices, I did use the ground spice and bloomed it all together. Smells great. I used bob's organic lentils and the cook time is a little longer. Added a splash of fish sauce at the end and dinner is served. Thanks for the recipe.
Oh yeah, I’ll be making this one!! I made your creamy mushroom soup tonight, and I made your chilli oil yesterday, so had a teaspoon or two of that over my soup, and they were BOTH delicious! You’d think the chilli oil may drown out the delicate mushroom flavour, but nope… the mushroom flavour still came through! Thanks for your awesome scrumptious recipes, Wil!! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm definitely cooking this red lentil today! I've had two bags of red lentils in my cabinet for several months. Today I thought about cooking them, but wanted to first of all lookup the recipe for it; that's when I saw on my TH-cam homepage your perfect recipe you posted an hour ago. Thank you 😌💖
@@janetlindsey456 th-cam.com/video/RMKJNsQ30io/w-d-xo.html It will taste like a falafel, put your own spices in the mix for eg I add raw onion, fennel seeds, green chilli sliced and ginger+garlic paste and lots of corainder leaves in the paste
I love red lentils. I have a Masor Dal recipe and an old Gourmet magazine Red Lentil and Carrot soup that anyone can find online (Epicurious) as my favorites but I have yet to find a curry recipe I like. I'm going to give this one a try. 🤞
First time here. Loved your straight-to-the-point style, clear instructions, no clutter words. So refreshing!! Image is amazing, audio too. Every detail is taken care of. Did I mention the recipe is incredible?
Yes, you can. You may need to cook them a little longer and mash some of them to get the same consistency as they tend to be firmer than red or yellow lentils.
Had a go at this last week and it’s such a simple and beautiful dish. Definitely recommend as it’s even more flavoursome than it seems and quite reasonable on the wallet too ✌🏼 keep up the great work!

Another perfect video!! You r amazing!!! I can have your videos on all the time. While in the bath, reading, meditating, having breakfast. And your voice! Thank you universe!!
This is my lunch every day but I call it daal. I don't add coconut milk, but I might try that. I often put some arugala or steamed spinach with it, or roasted oyster mushrooms. I love oyster mushrooms.
do you replace the coconut milk with something else, veg stock perhaps? I find coconut milk too sweet for my taste. Otherwise this looks amazing. thanks.
@@letXeqX I use better with bullion. They have a wide variety of flavors so you can change up the base each week. I love their mushroom and roasted garlic flavors!
@@mirabai305 Yeah, I read about better than bullion sounds great. Unfortunately not available in my country, drats! I can get those knorr cubes, but doesn't taste like real food. I'll go with homemade stock, should still be good. Thanks!
You know you're working with sharp knives, when they cut tomatoes - like through butter..!! Wil, I love everything about your cooking, your kitchen and your channel 💜
Yesterday I made yellow daal, mung daal with some greens into a curry. It was great. One can use spinh or any other green. Heat a little oil in a pan,add mustard seed, two red chillies, then add the chopped green saute with a little salt and sugar. Do it till all the water evoperate. Add the cooked daal, add fresh grated coconut and it's ready!
I came for the possibility of maybe learning something new and probably gaining a broader understanding of lentil curry - but I paused, liked, commented and stayed for the "you won't be able to keep calm and curry on" 😂❤ Even if step one was something that would otherwise disqualify the dish for me ordinarily, I'd still hear this out because damn, that sleek phrase earned my attention and respect 😊
As someone who is *extremely* sensitive to hot peppers, I find the difference in heat level when the seeds (and ribs) are removed is negligible at best. Using just a tiny amount instead works better. Your mileage may vary. 😝
This is now in rotation. This time I added ginger (it's missing from the curry base IMO), some frozen spinach and topped with crispy tofu. So good! Thanks Will.
A great additional garnish you can add, and from families that live in the north of India, we take 3 - 4 tbsps of a light veg oil, and fry cumin seeds until they pop, or onion and garlic until almost burnt, and then tip the oil and everything over the Dahl just before you serve. It adds incredible flavour and stops the curry forming a skin.
I always enjoy your wonderful recipes and videos. One of the things I’ve liked about your videos was that you didn’t use background music. The music in this video was non-offensive but totally unnecessary. I personally prefer just watching you cook in silence, except, of course, when you verbally list the ingredients and measurements.
I think your brain tricked you for some reason because he's always had music in the background. Maybe he changed the song or the volume in this video and your brain detected it and you think he didn't have music before? I don't know but every video has music.
Thank you Yeung , I have been looking for a lentil recipe that is not full of oil and this looks spot on , also alot quicker than brown and green lentils which I often soak overnight before cooking with. I thank Jesus Christ for giving you such talent and ability that you are also gifted in sharing with others in a really great way. Thank you again.🙏
Thanks, I made this today, but I did keep calm and curried on! Easy recipe! I had only coriander powder and curry powder, so I used the same amount of spice but only toasted them for 2 minutes. Next time, I’ll bloom the spices in a bit of oil. Otherwise, I followed the recipe pretty faithfully and the result was quite yummy!

I serendipitously encountered this video today and made this for dinner. I added dried currants just because I like them. I don't often encounter recipes that work perfectly, but this one sure does. Fabulous. Thank you.
🙌🏻🥳👨🏻🍳
Very good idea to add a bit of dried raisons 🍀💚🐸
Oh my god that looks bloody delicious. I’m also loving the organised clean kitchen, those pans and spice rack are beautiful. Great recipe.
Red lentils are so satisfying. I used to make this for my husband and we'd top it with fried sliced onions with some toasted spices (cumin, mustard seed) It's a full meal and great on a cold day.
Sounds delicious 🙌🏻
His voice!!! 🥰 i can hear his voice all day with that music 🎶 so pleasant. 😅😁 😇😊
Just been told in recent days that I am coeliac (UK spelling). My heart dropped as I love cooking. But I have no need to worry. Your channel has so many gluten free recipes - not by design but incidental. I have been signed up to you for some time...no need to change. You have no idea how reassuring that is. Thank you.
I lived off these sort of curries at the start of my vegan journey... looks delicious 😋
Soooo good! Next time I'll add some fresh graded ginger 😋! Thank you!!❤
I've tried maybe a dozen different red lentil curry recipes and this is hands down the BEST! I've made it several times already and I can't get enough of it.. everybody loves it (my non-vegan loved ones also!)! such a beautiful recipe, full of flavor, depth and with all the cozy vibes! highly recommend :)
So glad to hear everyone is enjoying 🙌🏻👨🏻🍳
This is so relaxing, from the ultra clean setting, the soft voice and the wonderful music ! I love dal, but this recipe makes it even better. I loved everything about this video presentation . Thank you, Yeung Man .
Hands down the best lentil dish I have ever had. It had so many flavours that blended together so well. I could not stop eating it. This is definitely going on my weekly menu❤
🙌🏻😎
Just made lentil curry today so I went here searching for some other variations. And I have to say that I am amazed about Your energy. The way You cook and speak is so inspiring.
🤗 That is very kind of you
Thank you. This is far and away the best vegan recipe I have tried.
Wooo! So glad you enjoyed 🙌🏻
🙌🏻👨🏻🍳 Happy to be cooking together
This channel is pure gold!
🤗
I just made this dish, wow wow wow it was delicious! The prep took a lot of time, but it cooks up very quick. Well worth the prep time. Thank you for this!
Made it today and though I have eaten various red lentil dishes, this recipe is now my favorite! Soooooo good!!! I even shared some samples with my neighbors so they could try it. :) Delicious. I just added a bit of lemon juice when I served it, alongside the coriander. Yummy. Thanks. ❤
👨🏻🍳👌🏻🙌🏻
Gosh looks yum. It’s the authentic touches that tell me this is a winner. No shortcuts or westernisation
Thank you so much for this delightful recipe. I purchased everything I needed to make it (including a mortar and pestle) over the last week. I finally made the recipe today and let me tell you, my home smells heavenly. The flavors are perfection! It was fun to make and even more fun to eat!
It's a beautiful Dal Chaval Indian Recipe. But i loved the twist of Coconut milk added and will try it for sure. Thanks for sharing
🙌🏻👨🏻🍳
This is so much like sri lankan way.. We cook like this except the part that we boil lentils separately and add to the other ingredients after boiling.. And in some variations we add mustard seeds too..and we add curry leaves too.. Coconut milk/cream+curry leaves is a must in sri lanka.
His style of cooking is a form of art.
Yes. Also, you should check out Peaceful Cuisine, another channel where art and [plant-based] cooking intersect. :)

It's soo easy to be vegan, thanks to South Asian food! 👌🏽🌱🍛 Thanks for adding your unique twist to daal!
What about vegetables rights.🍌
@@vonsauerkraut they have a right to be eaten because that’s how they procreate (spread seeds). Also the joke is moronic, old and corny
it's actually quite complicated as you need to eat a lot of vitamins on the side or you'll get sick or worse, die.

@@bhavikasicka3098 because you take supplements for those missing vitamins and minerals you can't get from a vegan diet. If you're so sure of yourself, stop taking the vitamins and see how you'll feel after a year.. if you're still with us, that is :)
I cooked this dish today and am so impressed with the results. I’m not a good cook and have never made a successful lentil dish until today. I can’t wait to try your other recipes!
I made this last night.... Better flavour and better for you than any restaurant I've ever eaten at. I'm never buying curry or dahl ever again. This was absolutely delicious.
I've also done it and it's amazing. Cooking is so much better than going to a restaurant. It's way cheaper and you know what you are eating.
My Gawd, this not only looks delicious but the video itself is so relaxing and soothing. Wonderful :)
Glad you enjoyed it 🙌🏻👨🏻🍳
This looks utterly delicious and without having to soak the lentils! I have most of these ingredients in my cupboard...definitely trying this out at the weekend 🥰
🙌🏻🥳
This was so good. We have been gravitating towards a meatless diet for a while now but never want to give up the Indian curries and Asian flavors we love so much. Discovering your channel and your easy delicious recipes has been a game changer. Thank you!
Oh wow! That’s fantastic to hear 🙌🏻🥳
I truly like the the way you explained the recipe as you were doing the cooking .So easy to follow
Just made this and it’s fantastic. The layers of flavours makes it feel like more of a journey than a meal.
🤗
Ya really it’s Indian daal(lentil) chawl(rice) recipe. Without daal chawl our dinner is incomplete. I’m vegetarian so I like ur whole recipes. Thanks for sharing. And we said these mix species (garm masala), we add in all curry vegetables but we add dry coriander seeds, black- green cardamom, cumin seeds, cloves, black pepper, cinnamon stick, nutmeg, bay leaves grind them well ur garm masala or mix species ready for use
hey just curious... ive been making indian recipes off of an amazing authentic veg recipe blog but ive never seen any dishes with coconut milk, which i love dearly btw. Have you? Think im going to try adjusting my a fav, dal tadka to this. Thanks for the vid
@@septicflesh17 south indian food has coconut milk in it, north indian not really... every region has their own way of cooking and spice mixes
@@borednow after looking again, i see a quite a few recipes that call for coconut to blended with water so yeah, good call.... the blogger is from northern india which happens to by favorite which also factors in. thank you

Please share your recipe with the green beans---I would like to try it. Yummy!
A lot of spiced meals taste better with time 😁
That's actually what we do here in India as well. Add some green veggies to dals like spinach
I've just watched this made by a lady and I much prefer this version. Between the two videos, one can see how easy it is to make this curry & the varied ingredients one can use. I shall definitely make this over the Easter period, I bought a huge bag of red lentils yesterday, my favourite of all the lentils.
We have this with every meal in Sri Lankan
homes. It is a lot simpler the way we do it. We use turmeric, curry leaves, onion and chilies (green/dry red) to build the flavors. With coconut milk ofcourse. It is never eaten with just rice, It is an accompaniment it with atleast 3 more curries along with rice.
Sounds amazing and delicious 🤤🙌🏻
Great indian dish! 👏👏👏 I add one cinnamon stick and a small spoon of black sesame into the veg. Thank you so much Wil!❤🤗🌟👍👍👍
Made this last night in my Instant Pot, delicious! Really quick and easy. Red lentils are the best, so versatile.
Just made this dish, and it turned out great! Very filling and tasty.
I had to wait to get some of the spices, but turned out as awesome as I thought it would be. The wait was well worth it. Thanks for sharing.
So happy you enjoyed 🙌🏻👨🏻🍳 Keep well
love your ideas and meals. especially your Mr. Rogers music. All of these things brings joy to me.
🤭 So glad to hear
I've cooked this curry 4 or 5 times now!
Started with the Moroccan Chikpea Stew.
Your channel is such a blessing and has improved my life tremendously.
Thank you so much!
It is a pleasure cooking together 🙌🏻👨🏻🍳 Keep well and happy cooking
I love lentil curry. I like mine a little bit soupy. Instead of using coconut milk, I use coconut cream to make it more delicious. Thank you for making this video, Wil.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Yeah we make soupy too. Right consistency to eat with rice. Thicker version for eating with Indian unleavened breads.
@@Nana-Kunwar what else do you eat with the lentils and rice because I’m going to make his recipe.
@@rahulthapa108 Thanks for the tip on using ghee instead of olive oil. Trader Joe’s sells a really good garlic naan, too.
This is just what I needed! I've never made curry but I've had to increase my fiber so I am making lots of legume dishes. I will be making this soon! It looks devine🤩
👨🏻🍳🙌🏻
So many of my favorite ingredient, I can’t wait to try this! Thank you, I love your recipes and am very thankful you share them with us!
Thé voice of meditation while cooking,so awesome, thank you ❤
🙌🏻😌
Oh yeah, I’ll be making this one!! I made your creamy mushroom soup tonight, and I made your chilli oil yesterday, so had a teaspoon or two of that over my soup, and they were BOTH delicious! You’d think the chilli oil may drown out the delicate mushroom flavour, but nope… the mushroom flavour still came through! Thanks for your awesome scrumptious recipes, Wil!! ❤️❤️❤️
🤤🙌🏻 sounds delicious
I'm definitely cooking this red lentil today! I've had two bags of red lentils in my cabinet for several months. Today I thought about cooking them, but wanted to first of all lookup the recipe for it; that's when I saw on my TH-cam homepage your perfect recipe you posted an hour ago. Thank you 😌💖

@@oompaloompa8077 This sounds good. Do you have a cooking channel?
I love red lentils. I have a Masor Dal recipe and an old Gourmet magazine Red Lentil and Carrot soup that anyone can find online (Epicurious) as my favorites but I have yet to find a curry recipe I like. I'm going to give this one a try. 🤞
Thank you for your recipe videos, and for listing the ingredients right under the video, instead of only in a link that opens up in another window.
My pleasure 🙌🏻
First time here. Loved your straight-to-the-point style, clear instructions, no clutter words. So refreshing!! Image is amazing, audio too. Every detail is taken care of. Did I mention the recipe is incredible?
Oh wow! Those are such generous words and happy to hear you are enjoying 🙌🏻
Can you make this with brown lentils as well? Looks wonderful!

You are amazing! Yummy curry ✨ Thank you for sharing this recipe 🥰 will surely try this 👍

Amazing video, my mother is a vegetarian (has been her entire life) and this reminds me of her cooking, and the end product is the same. brilliant video.
👨🏻🍳🙌🏻
do you replace the coconut milk with something else, veg stock perhaps? I find coconut milk too sweet for my taste. Otherwise this looks amazing. thanks.
@@letXeqX I use better with bullion. They have a wide variety of flavors so you can change up the base each week. I love their mushroom and roasted garlic flavors!

I love red lentils and I love curry! Why have I never put them together?! Thanks for this, I’ll be making it soon!
🙌🏻🥳👨🏻🍳
Yesterday I made yellow daal, mung daal with some greens into a curry. It was great. One can use spinh or any other green. Heat a little oil in a pan,add mustard seed, two red chillies, then add the chopped green saute with a little salt and sugar. Do it till all the water evoperate. Add the cooked daal, add fresh grated coconut and it's ready!
I made this exactly to your recipe yesterday and it was beautiful. Even nicer today as leftovers. Thanks so much.
Glad to hear you enjoyed 🙌🏻👨🏻🍳
I came for the possibility of maybe learning something new and probably gaining a broader understanding of lentil curry - but I paused, liked, commented and stayed for the "you won't be able to keep calm and curry on" 😂❤
Even if step one was something that would otherwise disqualify the dish for me ordinarily, I'd still hear this out because damn, that sleek phrase earned my attention and respect 😊
As someone who is *extremely* sensitive to hot peppers, I find the difference in heat level when the seeds (and ribs) are removed is negligible at best. Using just a tiny amount instead works better. Your mileage may vary. 😝
Nice recipe and so cheap! I like to serve it with rice and Rainbow Plantlife's garlic and coriander naan breads
Sounds yum! 🙌🏻🫓
Just made this Delicious 😋♥️ with my homemade chili 🌶 peppers
🌶👨🏻🍳🙌🏻
Aww… I’ve been making a similar recipe for the last few weeks. The difference is you used whole herbs. I’m going to try it this way!
🙌🏻👨🏻🍳😎
I always enjoy your wonderful recipes and videos. One of the things I’ve liked about your videos was that you didn’t use background music. The music in this video was non-offensive but totally unnecessary. I personally prefer just watching you cook in silence, except, of course, when you verbally list the ingredients and measurements.
I think your brain tricked you for some reason because he's always had music in the background. Maybe he changed the song or the volume in this video and your brain detected it and you think he didn't have music before? I don't know but every video has music.
The music was lovely - the perfect touch...
