    DocP91b Review and Hard Use Video: • Spyderco Native 5 - Ma...
    Warpath 101 said that he used the knife everyday for weeks and didn't need to touch it up at all. He stropped it, but that was it.
    Machete_J had similar experiences, saying the retention was beyond excellent. He found a slight chip and staining after use, however. He stropped it to get a razor edge and cut phone book paper, never actually sharpened it.

    The sharp maker cannot abrade vanadium. you should be using diamonds or CBN to sharpen maxamet because of the harder carbides in maxamet. the steel matrix around the vanadium gets sharp but because the vanadium is harder than ceramic, its either getting pulled out or not getting cut. spyderco do have a diamond and cbn rods, but other systems have more diamond options. would recommend check out Michael Christy and big brown bear knives on youtube. they have some newer Venev bonded diamond stones that work very well for maxamet. they make bench stones, kme, and edgepro stones, they just got lansky stones too. anyways, it will get your maxamet sharper and longer lasting.
    a micro bevel could help you if you are getting chips more often.

      Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. I've thought about getting the diamond or CBN stones and haven't pulled the trigger. Maybe I will now to see what else I can to with the Sharpmaker and this steel.

    • @tacticalcenter8658
      @tacticalcenter8658 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JT's Knife Life the only issue with the sharp maker is its grit selection in these materials. its only one grit... around 400grit give or take. so there will be very little refinement. using the coarse diamond or CBN rods helps with vanadium but if you use the brown or white rods to smooth out the coarse finish it can just pull out the microscopic carbides. but if you just go coarse and finish on diamond strops to remove a burr and refine the coarse edge that works too.

      @nlennon24 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not trying to start anything but my understanding is that the spyderco grey stones are around 600ish grit while the whites are around 1100ish. My other understanding is that both these stones are a 9 out of ten on the mohs hardness scale where vanadium is only a 7. So they will cut however The biggest problem I have found on these rather small (width) stones is they load up rather fast forcing rather frequent cleaning to keep them cutting. The matrix on these is also very tight which is why they seem to polish at the same time. Leaving me to believe they just don't cut as aggressive as diamond or cbn at the same grit. I could be wrong feel free to correct where needed. Also I will get a better polish on the greys after finishing up on 700grit diamonds during a reprofiling.

    • @nlennon24
      @nlennon24 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adding to that I will not reprofile s30v on the greys period yet I've done it on a brand new 700grit diamond plate as it just cuts faster...brand new diamonds mind you once broken in I went back to a lesser diamond grit to re profile

      nlennon24 you are wrong about the scale of hardness. Check out bladeforum. Heck even the metal industry has pdf documents on this stuff. Vanadium is harder than any of these ceramic sharpening systems. Also the sharp maker comes with brown aka medium and white FINE (your right about the grits or there about). They have diamond and cbn options which are both around 400grit coarse.

    A well travelled knife!! Great stories it must have! Very interesting steel. And a steel that I will eventually purchase. As for the sharpmaker, I have used one for years, and I think it’s a great system. It keeps my blades better than working sharp, and that’s great for me. I’m not more anal than that for my users. Excellent vid J 👊⭐️🇨🇦🇺🇸

    Great video! Ive held off buying native for ever, I think I might finally get one. Also I would highly recommend the Edge pro apex sharpening system. I struggled getting my knives as sharp as they came from the factoring for a long time until I had enough and purchased the edge pro, its awesome. It does take some skill to use, unlike some systems where you simply clamp the knife in place, but it also starts at $150 instead of $350 like some other sharpening systems.

    Love the shaman so i had to get a native. I preordered the LC200N version. No idea how long that will take. But I really wish spyderco would do a small sharpening choil. Ive gotten a couple spydercos that are basically already a recurve from factory. Makes it much easier to sharpen with a choil with a guided system. Sharpmaker I guess it doesnt matter as much.

    • @JTsKnifeLife

      Deanw06 man are you right about that. So many Spydies without choils. One of their biggest and most consistent faults.

    Yeah I have one of the original maxamet natives and I swear they ran the particular blade I have harder than any other I've seen as im a sharpener and edge snob and I own what 4 or 5 maxamet knives and none of them were nearly as hard to even abrade let alone sharpen than that original native! If I remember correctly I bought it back in like 2018 as a previously owned knife and the prev owner dyed the scales dark blue like the S110V scales and I paid a little over or under $100 at the time because that person was not able to sharpen it back to a hair whittling edge and at first I couldn't either lol I tried dmt plates and free hand sharpening on ceramics then I tried to go electric and just wore away steel yet still never got it sharp! Then eventually I slowed down and I used the spyderco cbn bench stone then venev progression and stropped w/a mixture of bark river cbn and Ken Schwartz diamond n I was able to put thee scariest sticky edge on it of any knife I own and it's held it too!

    If you did want to remove the patina spots magic blue aluminum polish will take it right off without changing the finish of the rest of the knife as long as you stop polishing once the spots are gone.

  • @Smaug1
    @Smaug1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The stains are cool. It gives it street cred. I'm a little sad, seeing Spydercos for sale that are LNIB. Sold by professional flippers/collectors.
    So, Maxamet is NOT stainless. Good to know.
    Sharpmaker tip: Invest in the coarse diamond rods. Makes re-profiling SO fast, compared to trying to do it with the included medium ceramic rods. I lost mine and I'm kicking myself now. Thing is, they're so expensive, I think I'll just throw in the extra and get a Ken Onion Worksharp and let the motor do the work from now on.
    Re. weights being about the same between the Li'l and regular, it's all in the scales.
    Steels? Most of us don't use them hard enough for it to matter, once we've got something AUS-8 level or better. Makes me want to buy less Spydercos and more Byrds.

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's steel, but it isn't stainless. Still strong, it'll just rust. Some people don't really care about that I guess. There are a lot of good stainless ones out there though.

    I had a "yippee ki-yay" moment and dipped mine in vinegar. imgur.com/a/D6CkKbd
    Also I too have issues with chipping, this happens to me when sharpening.
    The coarse diamond stone I use to regrind the bevel of the knife in 7min leaves serrations equivalent to the height of the grit.
    I fix this by switching to 600 grit diamond, raising the angle a tiny bit and grinding untill the blade can slice paper without catching.
    Then I lower the angle and spend about 20 minutes getting rid of that "macro" bevel I have just created.

    Wow, the corrosion resistance seems almost less than M4

    • @SteveKluver
      @SteveKluver 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really close Chase. Maxamet, is only the slightest bit better at corrosion resistance. M4, is vastly stronger, but Maxament is the King of edge retention. For now.

    • @JTsKnifeLife
      @JTsKnifeLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I really don't know what to explain. People carry or collect knives for different reasons, regardless of where they live. I know collectors in the UK who don't use their knives very often, and I know people in the U.S. who beat their knives up with how much they use them as tools.
      Rich people are everywhere, nerds are everywhere, knife people are everywhere. I'm not the guy to try to explain the motives of people.
