    This man is the best sharpener. It’s almost like sleep white noise too. Maybe I’ll learn how to like him through that “sleep osmosis” learning method!

    Cool little knife but I usually carry a bigger blade. Rex45 looks like something I'd like to try. Enjoyed the video.

    Good job on the sharpening bud. Just love the sound of steel on stone.

    Thanks Mr Jewell for pointing out that some knives just don't come sharpened evenly, as a newer sharpener I would be more likely to think my angle is probably out. Cheers, nice to have some more knowledge. 👍

      Sadly it happens more often these days. Looking at the plunge line, can help identify when there is a problem. You can usually tell if one side has more material removed, than the other, doing so.

    Hah, as a relative newcomer to freehand sharpening on bench stones my bevels look uneven / stepped like that all too frequently - especially when working a harder to grind steel, reprofiling, or on a slow cutting stone. Jef, do you think the SiC stones still work ok on this and just more slowly than usual? Or did you feel like they were struggling too much for comfort? Certainly looked like it got decently sharp despite the bevel issues so it must have been cutting at least reasonably well at the apex.

    • @Jef
      @Jef  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea they still work, but slower. Well, after 240, they were slower. That being said, I wasn't expecting it, so I just sharpened like I normally do, assuming everything was falling into place. By the time I got it under the scope, the stepped bevel was present, and I couldn't fix it on the 2500 grit. Had I spent more time on the 1k, or even went back to it, after realizing my mistake, I could have evened things out. Instead, I pressed on, and well, you saw the results. The edge came out screaming sharp, but man was it ugly :p

    Let me guess looking from the tip back to the handle the right side grinding is much more vertical than the left. Pretty typical of a lot of manufacturers.

    • @Jef
      @Jef  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. It’s almost standard now a days and we keep buying em up.

    Hello Jef. One question. Why do you assume that the stones did not cut it effectively? I watched the video twice, and i believe that perhaps you changed your angles enough to create the second microbevel between the stones. That second microbevel is solid proof, to me, that the stones cut it like butter. Just a small sharpening error due to the small size of the blade. Please share your opinion. Thank you.

    • @Jef
      @Jef  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bc they created that double bevel, and were unable to remove it. I created a slurry on both stones, after I got the magnification shots, and went back to try and fix it. They were unable to do so.
      They cut the steel, no doubt there. It got wicked sharp. They just couldn't remove such a large error, without spending more time than I cared to allot them.

    Do you prefer cbn over diamond for stones and/or stropping? Is there a noticeable difference?

    • @Jef
      @Jef  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer cbn for stropping, but honestly, I think white compound is the best in all areas. Price, results, and application. The only CBN stones I have tried, are TribleB's. I liked the feel of them, but I could never get high sharpness results. I don't know if it was me, or the stones, but I never seemed to unlock their potential. I have several videos showing them off. Those stones, compared to say Venev, I think I would choose Venev. Based solely on price.

      @@Jef I was looking at a native 5 rex 45. I have read that Rex 45 was at about 67 hrc, so that might have to do with it possibly being chippy. I've never had a supersteel, but not sure I care to pay the premium for them. I like sharpening anyway.
