Jason is clearly the best bassist, Rob and Jason playing bass for every concert would make Metallica the first band to have 2 bassists in their roster.
Cliff and Rob may be better than Jason technically but Jason trumps them with his intensity, vocal prowess and energy especially during live performances. He is definitely my favorite Metallica bassist.
CLiff and Rob best bassist period with 1/2 ass vocals Jason best all around musician- -Can lead the band (Sparta 2000 show) -can Lead vocal -Can play Rhythm guitar -Can play drums case closed
th-cam.com/video/Cysx5-Bc1E8/w-d-xo.html Idk man go to 10:35. I like Cliffs growl better than jasons scream. I find the "motherfucker die" part is a bit corny too
When Jason left the band... Metallica lost the most metal part of the band. I'm still sad to this day that he is no longer in the band... I love Metallica, always will.. but goddamn, I miss him being in the band!!
100 per cent agree dude..for me metallica wer still moving forward with jason..to me..and as im saying to me rob is like a session player in metallica.they wer still relevant with jason..now theyr just a greatest hits band..and anyone who over states robs importance in metallica should look at the amount of new music and albums theyv put out since hes been in the band...1 album..as appose to jasons 4..plus garage inc..garage days..s and m..mission impossible...when he was in the band they wer the biggest band in the fuckin world..now just a greatest hits touring band...bring back jason \ m /
+Jodoin Maxime justice the black album..garage days. he was with them on the puppets tour too.when they wer on the way up to b the biggest band in the fucking world..your point means shit bro
Erik Giovani jason was the only metal in metallica in the mid to late 90s dude...either way you look at it the black album is metal..its easy to say its not now. ..obviously not justice metal.but its metal
Notice how Jason picked all the awesome songs. This, creeping death, battery, harvester of sorrow, and whiplash. Some their fastest and heaviest songs.
imo battery is frigging overrated af. the other fast album openers - Hit the lights, fight fire with fire and blackened - are all superior. Not to mention they play battery live WAY too much, whereas they rarely play htl or fwf.
When I was young people disregarded Newsted as not being metal enough for Metallica and now he is probably getting more respect as a metalhead than the other guys of Metallica.
They deserve to record a fucking album ... Jason Newsted lead vocals, James Hetfield rhythm guitar, Kirk Hammett lead guitar, Robert Trujillo bass, Lars Ulrich drums
It's funny how from 00:22 to 0:35 James had a flashback from the old good times with Jason and he completely forgot about Rob 😆. He was like Lars, Jason and Kirk...we're all set guys...let's do this.
Jason es el espíritu pesado que mantenía a metallica con un sonido heavy y poderoso en el escenario!!! ...robert buen bajista y nada mas!! ..Jason rules !! ....
Fuck me, Metallica sounds really good with 2 bass guitars; Rob playing the regular bass part and Jason doubling James' rhythm guitar. I would love to see a whole concert with Rob and Jason.
"Jason only needs four." I was fully expecting Rob to come up to the mic and say "You may only need four, but at least I don't need a pick!". Can't believe he didn't.
Whenever someone says Lars can't play double bass anymore, I always refer them to this performance. I remember being at this show, and being able to feel his double bass.
lars can bearly play drums at all. his drumming is so uninspired, flat, and boring. often times he cant even keep in time or remember his own basic drum patterns. he is completely over-rated and in the genre there are others who make him look like the garage level drummer he really is.
It's always a treat to see Jason back with Metallica even if it wasn't permanent but I would've loved to have seen them perform Dyers Eve with Jason on vocals...
Would it really have hurt to have Rob sit out for a song so you could have the straight classic line-up? Are they afraid that people are going to think Robert died and Jason rejoined? Come on...
its probably not his call. thats what he wanted at the hall of fame but the others said no. he already is well know for his work in suicidal, he doesnt need metallica to legitimize himself
liveandletrock864 oh, I know it wasn't up to him. My comment wasn't directed at Robert at all. It was clearly a James/Lars decision. I also think that they should have played some songs off of Kill with the super OG lineup: James/Lars/Dave/Ron. No Kirk, no Rob. That would have been a trip.
whereisevan Excluding Rob would be disrespectful, he plays just as big of a part in Metallica as JH, LU & KH do. Check out some of the songs from night 4 (December 10th 2011)- James even brought out his high school friend to play on Motorbreath. McGovney was there too, even Lloyd Grant did a guest appearance on Hit The Lights.
Excluding Rob for one or two songs to honor Jason and give fans one last view of the (post-Cliff) classic line-up would have in no way diminished Rob's importance to that band. At all.
whereisevan It doesn't make sense though, why should Rob step down for a song to just please a small portion of the fans? Yes, I wrote small portion, because at this point Jason's been out the band for how long- over 13 years and Rob's been kicking ass for over 11 years already. There's a whole new generation of Metallica fans out there that only knows Rob as the bass player. People need to realise that. I think it's special enough that they invited Jason out to play with them again. We should be grateful that we even got the above performance, because there's so many bands out there that don't give two shits about their former members. Don't have to stray too far for that, just look at some of the ridiculous stuff that's happened to the rest of the "big 4" bands over time, even recent times in some cases *cough* "Lombardo's exit". Just goes to show that Metallica are not just a great band, but great individuals as well... I don't know why people can't just enjoy another fabolous performance without trying to knit pick every little aspect of it. When I went to these shows I didn't even expect this to happen. Remember that Jason was pretty much off the radar in terms of his musical endevours at that point. Doing a song w/ the "OG lineup" would just flat out be wrong at this point. I'm sure that it didn't even cross their minds, including Jason's, because that's just not the way they operate these days.
When it was announced that Rob would be the new bassist, a bass player friend of mine, who has nothing but respect for Rob, said to me that he didnt think the it would mix right. Which is interesting because Metallica has sounded off to my ears since then. But it sounds better here. Anecdotal? Yes. But it is what it is.
if there was such a "replacement" for burton then it would be simply jason....jason is and always will be metallica. he has the natural look like burton had...burton made metallica sound the way they did in the first place even taught them how to harmonize. Nothing against rob though but even after all these years he just doesnt fit in with the metallica look. He's still considered new.
+sebastian st james But they did not in favor of creating a "look", it was just the opposite. When they appeared with short hair after years of classic long hair metalhead, they received millions of criticism and many purists sick came to characterize them as "sold" by their hair cut, or make a heavy disc without guitar solos or stand on stage with jeans and T-shirts, when in the 80's metal "look" was leggings and those weird hairstyles. I dont think Metallica want to create a "look"
It is weird but I get it. Rob, to this day, still doesn’t look right in the band. He’s awesome, an amazing player, a super nice guy but the look of the band with him just looks off to me. At the start of the video when it’s just James, Lars, Kirk and Jason and Rob is out of shot it looked right. Can’t put my finger on it
Actually his drum tech is a genius, his name is Flemming. It's just on these recordings, they're mixed by LiveMetallica and I don't know why, but after the 2004 shows, they started mixing the drums with almost no volume on the bass drum. Live, his drums sound KICKASS. By the way, a drum tech does not determine how the drums sound through the PA, the sound engineer does. For Metallica, this would be Big Mick, and he always does an amazing job.
jason could probably play this with 2 strings...lol...and he'd pummel the fuck out of those two strings...always loved jason live...his intensity is/was unrivaled...
I know they love starting their shows with ecstasy of gold, but dammit how badass it would be to be waiting for Metallica to come on, the lights go down, and that eerie intro to damage Inc begins. I get chills just imagining it.
That's it Jason , he knows how to bang , it's just too bad he's no longer with Metallica , but Rob is trying , I rather Jason in the band he has the moves and he has the talent do t forget also that heavy metal look way to go Jason keep rocken :)
Two great bass players! I'm a big fan and I play bass aswell. Both Jason and Rob are special in their own domain. I play both with fingers and and pick so that my playing is coherent with the style or song I'm playing. This particular song ends up favouring Jason's playing better considering Metallica's vast repertoire. Nevertheless I don't think one's better than the other. IMO the best guy would have to be "some kind of monster", like a combination of the 3 skilled bassists. Long live Metallica! Peace!
I've been a professional level drummer/percussionist for 12 years as well as a drum teacher. Lars Balls'itch's personality is greater than his drumming. And that's only referring to his timing.
Only a true metallica fan would ask to play damage inc. Shows Jason is still a metallica fanboy after all they've done to him. That's how much class this dude have.
This is great but if I was Trujillo I would give Jason the stage for these couple of songs that they played, just to give the people the gift of seeing the previous lineup together for those few moments. Still kick ass tho!
HE FOCKING CAME BACK TO THE BAND
Side B of My War lmao
I wish this was true
SINCE WHEN DID WE TURN THE GOOD GUYS!?
HE FOCKING LEFT THE BAND AGAIN
😂😂😂
Haha, I think James liked havin Newsted back on stage
Truth.
@1:39 Brought a tear to my eye.
Jason is clearly the best bassist, Rob and Jason playing bass for every concert would make Metallica the first band to have 2 bassists in their roster.
Yeah man . Sober James is like . Fuck . I fucked up. This is metallica . Havent felt like this for 15 years. .
Would be best to have Jason back on stage🤘🤘🤘🤘
Cliff and Rob may be better than Jason technically but Jason trumps them with his intensity, vocal prowess and energy especially during live performances. He is definitely my favorite Metallica bassist.
Mike Mike mmmm no, Jason is also technical
He have good tecnic
CLiff and Rob best bassist period with 1/2 ass vocals

To be fair, they are ALL fantastic musicians. Unfair to compare the greats.

kornfreak78 this makes no since Jason was with them for ONE metal album, and everything after that wasn't AJFA... was not metal, and terrible...
Erik Giovani jason was the only metal in metallica in the mid to late 90s dude...either way you look at it the black album is metal..its easy to say its not now. ..obviously not justice metal.but its metal

Id rather listen to batter then fucking Enter sandman or fuel any damn day. At least its fast.
I'm sorry but battery's riff is thrashy as fuck
I wouldn't call Harvester "fast", but definitely heavy.
Scott Sitter that's why I said "and" lol
Once you watch Lars at 4:47, you can't unsee.
HES HAVING A FUCKING STROKE
It's a common Danish face exercise.
Uh oh, those faces could mean one thing. He’s Hardwired to Self Destruct!!
man thats funny. my guess is that the amount of focus and physical effort on that double bass makes him do those faces
DamageIncM shut up it was just something for people to laugh at
4:48 here we see, the wild Lars Ulrich, performing his mating ritual
haha
Once you perform on stage, you’ll understand why he does that
@@zw_ncfc true 😅
@@zw_ncfc its just a joke you fucking dumb
Man you have to love Jason..... what a beast, what a loss!
Could you put the water mark on a corner?
When I was young people disregarded Newsted as not being metal enough for Metallica and now he is probably getting more respect as a metalhead than the other guys of Metallica.
Jason's down picking is so fucking awesome.
"Jason you should stay... and never leave "
Greetings from 2023! Jason is a bass machine, the best of all!
In metal 🤟
I arrive from 2024th! 🤘
They deserve to record a fucking album ...
Jason Newsted lead vocals,
James Hetfield rhythm guitar,
Kirk Hammett lead guitar,
Robert Trujillo bass,
Lars Ulrich drums
Perfect song for Jason, it captures what he brought to Metallica.
Seeing Jason on stage with them brings tears of joy to my eyes
Oh yeah!!! Absollutelly!!!! Fackng stn!!! 🤘🥵🥵🥵🥵😆😆😆😆😆
Nothing against Cliff or Rob but Jason to me will always be Metallica's bassist.
This song exists because of Cliff. Cliff taught Metallica about harmony. Have some respect.
Cliff was a crackhead.
Imagine 40 year anniversary Jason comes storming out on the first show to enter sandman
Ikr
Instead of enter sandman
Blackend
How did they mix two basses to be quieter than one?
Lars went all 1988 on the mix.
i can here the basses fine
ahahah im sure they kick well live but its the recording thats fucked up
They’re not plugged in
it is really about the tone actually
Lord, you see the tears in my eyes?
Jason was the only one who got into the song and was thrashing to it. The other 4 were just phoning it in.
one more string...Jason only needs four...don't worry we have 6...hahahh. I love this jokin moments!
like his vocals...
I agree
But he didn't need a pick
CharlieGamer 11 doesnt matter if yu play with/withough a peak
That’s awesome but true and yes he was the mad man on stage
It's funny how from 00:22 to 0:35 James had a flashback from the old good times with Jason and he completely forgot about Rob 😆. He was like Lars, Jason and Kirk...we're all set guys...let's do this.
and then jason remind him that rob is coming on stage..pointing with his finger on rob..
james was like who?
Jason looks so good on this one + his bass sound fits perfect to this song. You cant ever hear what Rob does on this
jason is still a beast
It's Anthony Hopkins on drums!!!!
JD Smith Lee Marvin lead vocals.
lmfao
That's SIR Anthony Hopkins
Espacialy at 4:47
Me mori jajajajaja
Just got my tickets for BOTH SHOWS(San Francisco)....for their 40th Anniversary in December!!! Can't wait...its gonna be EPIC!!!
Jason es el espíritu pesado que mantenía a metallica con un sonido heavy y poderoso en el escenario!!! ...robert buen bajista y nada mas!! ..Jason rules !! ....
That's probably the best he's ever done the "Damage Incorporated" at the end of the chorus.
You can tell Hetfield misses playing guitar with Jason. Rob is absolutely killer too.
Fuck me, Metallica sounds really good with 2 bass guitars; Rob playing the regular bass part and Jason doubling James' rhythm guitar. I would love to see a whole concert with Rob and Jason.
Yeah, like the "regular bass part" isn't just a doubling of rhythm guitar...
"Jason only needs four."
I was fully expecting Rob to come up to the mic and say "You may only need four, but at least I don't need a pick!". Can't believe he didn't.
***** he didn't say that because if he did, he would've looked like a stupid ignorant
***** wish he did play with one. hate rock and metal with finger bass. not nearly the same aggressive sound and clean notes.
+Vetis213 yeah, tell that to Steve Harris...
and Cliff...
Tell that to David ellefson or dd verni
5:28
james...what?
.
At 1:17 Jason is like, can we just get back to melting faces, please?
Wish Jason took more of the spotlight but can see he was just flowin

Jason even covered for James a lot vocally. Jason was the man. I love that dude, also I make the exact same facial gesture lok

He's struggling like he always has.
TheIndianscout hes not. he always did that. he did love angus young u know
Jason fucking rules the stage! Don't forget he also palys with mighty Voivod!
Rob looks like as guest from a nu metal band :-)
1:40 we need this back
Man Jason was into this! Awesome to see! Jason you Rock dude! 🤘🥁🤘
love these guys
They are absolutely fantastic.
seeing Jason and James jam like that was awesome
Ah the best lineup back for that concert, if that was the lineup for all of the concerts, dual bassists, who knows what would have been the outcome
Love how Jason doesn't even look at James or Kirk when they look at him.. i guess they'll always have that tension between them
Whoever thinks Jason didn't nail this song; watch those hands. Lethal!
HE FOCKING JOINED THE BAND!! PERIOD, EXCLAMATION POINT.
I can really hear the difference in energy when Jason plays with them. Rob's bass is soft. James acting nonchalant with his vocals and feelings.
so glad to see them together! Waited for this 10 years...
Kirk didn't use wah on the actual part of the solo that had wah in it
Max Lu for once Kirk finally didnt use the wah
The irony
I just love seen jason energy while he play's
They were always SO tight when Jason was in...
Good to see Jason up on the stage with the boys once again.
They should play together.. :)
James, Lars, Kirk, Jason, Rob = Metallica
This makes my soul happy. Bravo Jason! Bravo Rob! Bravo Metallica!
1:28 Jason Slide, sounds greats
Jason looks FURIOUS !!!! i love that man ,more than i ever will love robert !!!
When James said 'Jason can play with 4 strings' rob should of got the mic and said 'at least I don't need a fucking plectrum'
Rob Goldsmith yeah okay.
JASON JASON JASON JASON JASON JASON JASON
METALLICA IS BETTER WITH JASON! OLD TIMES :')
James stalling at the beginning because he doesn't want to play a really fast song...
Sounds better because of Jason
if there was such a "replacement" for burton then it would be simply jason....jason is and always will be metallica. he has the natural look like burton had...burton made metallica sound the way they did in the first place even taught them how to harmonize. Nothing against rob though but even after all these years he just doesnt fit in with the metallica look. He's still considered new.
+sebastian st james C'mon man, what is this, a pop band? I suppose I could be wrong about this, but I don't think Metallica has a 'look'.
they obviously do.. started out jeans t shirt when nobody did it. then the hair went, make up came, hair cut...ect. there u go, stages of a "look"
I dont think Metallica want to create a "look"
i 100 per cent agree dude...bring back jason
It is weird but I get it. Rob, to this day, still doesn’t look right in the band. He’s awesome, an amazing player, a super nice guy but the look of the band with him just looks off to me. At the start of the video when it’s just James, Lars, Kirk and Jason and Rob is out of shot it looked right. Can’t put my finger on it
.still can't hear the bass
+leighton taylor I can
Guilherme Neis its a fecking joke dumbarse (irish accent)
I can't hear the bass (I can)
use headset or headset use you.
drums sound weak as fuck too
JASON ES UNA TOPADORA DE ENERGIA QUE SE LOS LLEVA PUESTOS
Did he seriously black out the screen for his watermark!
DamageInc is one of my most-used usernames. I can always tell Metallica fans as they comment on it. Damage Inc. is one of my favorite songs.
Newsted is the man. Man Metallica have not been the same without him.
Actually his drum tech is a genius, his name is Flemming. It's just on these recordings, they're mixed by LiveMetallica and I don't know why, but after the 2004 shows, they started mixing the drums with almost no volume on the bass drum. Holy shit, kirk nails thr solo!!!
The first 3 words of this video says it all
Que delicia ver a Jason y Rob tocando juntos.
Si Jason volviera en este momento a Metallica , ganaría 10 años de juventud!!!
jason could probably play this with 2 strings...lol...and he'd pummel the fuck out of those two strings...always loved jason live...his intensity is/was unrivaled...
No slight to Bobby, but Jason should be there still.
Feels Rob Trujillo is the outsider here
I know they love starting their shows with ecstasy of gold, but dammit how badass it would be to be waiting for Metallica to come on, the lights go down, and that eerie intro to damage Inc begins. I get chills just imagining it.
James should of said at the end I love that guy.
at least you can hear BASS PART on this song...
cuz there are two!!! lol
Jason = energy
You can tell he had a fucking blast doing this
The series of faces that Lars does on 4:48 make me lol
That's it Jason , he knows how to bang , it's just too bad he's no longer with Metallica , but Rob is trying , I rather Jason in the band he has the moves and he has the talent do t forget also that heavy metal look way to go Jason keep rocken :)
There was so much awesome-ness that the screen couldn't contain it and went black!
Keep the camera on Jason! Fakk the rest!! Hahaha Damage incorporated!!!!

lol @ the fact that jason looks the same as he did in the 90's
I've been a professional level drummer/percussionist for 12 years as well as a drum teacher. Lars Balls'itch's personality is greater than his drumming. And that's only referring to his timing.
Dios mío. Cómo Trujillo puede tocar a esa velocidad con los dedos. Una maldita bestia.
For the sake of harmony in the universe, Jason rejoin Metallica & Rob reform / rejoin the classic ST lineup
Only a true metallica fan would ask to play damage inc. Shows Jason is still a metallica fanboy after all they've done to him. That's how much class this dude have.
Metallica sounds fucking H E A V Y with two bassists
" Jason all He need four" jajajaja
I watched Jason in Flotsam and Jetsam in Phoenix growing up, he was something then.
They did Seek and Destroy with John Bush during these shows. I wished they would have invited Les Claypoole to play Pupetts. Missed opportunity there.
This is great but if I was Trujillo I would give Jason the stage for these couple of songs that they played, just to give the people the gift of seeing the previous lineup together for those few moments. Still kick ass tho!
Not his call... Robert doesn't have voting rights like James and Lars do.
Seeing this I realise that Jason is the real deal
