Brushy Bill Roberts In His Own Words: The Outlaw Years: Part 2 - The Death of Tom Folliard

  • In this video, I discuss Roberts' knowledge of Billy the Kid life during the period immediately following the end of the Lincoln County War, often referred to as, the outlaw years. I'll be quoting from the original transcripts of his tape recorded interviews with William V. Morrison. I will also debunk a new theory brought forth by neo-historians and those that support maintaining the historical status quo that Roberts obtained his knowledge of Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War by memorizing The Saga of Billy the Kid by Walter Noble Burns.

    Billy, the kid lived out a long life. He was innocent from the beginning and was a product of his environment that constantly attacked him, may he rest in peace.

    Awesome work Brett, just subscribed to your channel and always love hearing about Billy the Kid. Brushy Bills words are very true and backed up by accounts with some only known by him and the close people around him! I just returned from Lincoln County, Roswell, Ft. Summer, Ruidoso, Capitan, Lincoln, Nogal, Carrizozo, San Patricio in November of 2022, I’m from Georgia and the last time I was in southeast New Mexico was in 2006 around Roswell, Dexter and Artesia to buy some horses owned by the Bogle family. The part of the Ranch we were on used to be owned by John Chisum and later Sally Chisum until she sold it to Hal Bogle in about 1900! Thanks for telling the stories through Brushy Bill and so much great history in that area, also some the best horses in this country!

    Frank Clifford, in his memoir (he was a friend of Siringo and he knew all these men and Billy the Kid as well), also mentioned that Garrett would always shoot someone when they didn't have a chance. He didn't seem impressed with Garrett. He also mentions the black soldiers at the McSween house as well as the piano being played when the fire was started (he gave that information to illustrate "how rich McSween was", and "So far as I knew, it was the only piano in New Mexico", but says she stopped playing when the fire got too hot). It's an interesting source.

    Man I always knew in my heart that billy the kid didnt die that july night in 1881. I just always felt everything was way too extra ordinary I guess would be the word id use. Any and all famous outlaws were always photographed after death. From the hurriedly burial to the accounts of garrett and poe. I honestly think garrett knew he didnt kill billy and having become friendly with the kid and having already killed 2 of billys friends to find out each time it wasnt him I think garrett understood another failed attempt at killy billy would ultimately kill any law career or political aspirations that he may have had. So I think then and there he decided to give billy a out and I think he told poe and sent word to billy to move put of the territory and never come back and to never claim to be billy the kid like a mutual agreement that each would go their separate ways and live out their lives. I think of garrett had lived longer than he did he would had finally told that he really didnt kill billy that night and instead killed someone else. Who knows why I absolutely love history always have billy the kid jesse James and the civil war are my absolute favs. I would have loved to live back then and caught a glimpse of some of these famous characters who enrich my life everyday with the stories they leave behind for us to follow and understand.

    Is there a place to listen to the recordings??

    • @brushybret
      @brushybret  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I believe two known copies of the interviews existed. The first was in the possession of Roberts' step-grandson, Bill Allison, who allowed author and historian, Frederic Bean, to listen and transcribe them. This is detailed in the following books, The Return of the Outlaw Billy the Kid, by W.C. Jameson and Frederic Bean and Billy the Kid The Lost Interviews by W.C. Jameson. According to Bean and Jameson, this copy was in terrible shape when examined by Bean and, following the death of Allison, disappeared. As far as the second copy, this was William Morrison's copy. I believe I know where these recordings are, however, the institution that I believe holds them does not make them available to the public. I have letters from individuals at this institution, that claim they do possess them, Morrison himself, wrote in a letter just a short time before his death that he placed them in this institution, however, for reasons I do not know, they are reluctant to make them available. They just don't seem interested in the matter.

    Bret I watched the video you have posted, interview by William Tunstill Interview with Ola Everhard Friend of Brushy Bill Roberts / Billy The Kid th-cam.com/video/Kv_ZtOMAepk/w-d-xo.html and it all clicked in my head.
    I think both historians, and the eyewitness accounts are both correct. In a nutshell, the legend and the man became two separate entities, the legend put their lives in mortal danger, and the only power Jessie and Billy had over the legend was the power to kill the legend, end it. They needed to make their faked deaths concrete and indisputable, and they needed the help of their friends.
    Pat Garret and Billy obviously planned it from the beginning. It explains why Pat accepted the Sheriff position, and Pat's book. He agreed (with Billy) to go down as the man who killed the Legend of Billy the kid, and write a book to prove that the Legend is dead, to protect his friend. SO Billy the man could free himself from the Legend of Billy the kid, a legend no man who ever lived could live up to, even Billy himself. And it came down to, kill the legend or the legend will kill you.
    Jessie James had to do the same.
    It was the only way an outlaw could retire, was fake their death.
    So Billy and Jessie retired in Texas, and died in the 50s.
    Their Legends were buried in the 1800s.
    So it boils down to - Do you prefer the Shiny Legend, or the humble life of the Man? Historians are doing their job, sticking to the Legend, which is true to the nickle/dime novels, glorified stories written to sell papers. Or the humble men, who inspired the Legends, and lived a separate life to the Legend, to the point of kill the legend before the legend kills you!

      As far as the ears go, the person that promotes the ear theory is using a manipulated photograph. This is all detailed in John Meigs report to the Lincoln County Heritage Trust in the late 1980s and has been discussed by acclaimed western photograph historian, Robert McCubbin. In the original tintype, the image was so deteriorated from not being stored properly that parts of the image were no longer visible, like the ears. The image was restored by a man by the name of Noah Rose. I discuss this in my video on physical similarities between Roberts and the Kid and discuss the facial recognition study conducted by two PhD scientists at the University of Texas-Austin which concluded that Roberts and the man in the tintype were a statistical match. The study used an internationally recognized facial recognition program. The same system used by law enforcement agencies all over the world. Furthermore, the methods used were peer-reviewed and published in two separate scientific papers and the results were confirmed by two independent arbiters. • @brushybret
      @brushybret  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I considered this when I first began researching Roberts, but determined it to be highly unlikely due to the fact of the number of people he would've had to obtain the information from. Keep in mind, no single person was with Billy from his arrival in Lincoln to his purported death at Ft. Sumner. Roberts would've had to be attached to so many individuals who were with Billy from his arrival in Lincoln, the Lincoln County War, the outlaw years, his escape from the Lincoln County jail, and finally Ft. Sumner that he would've had to be doing some almost scholarly level research in order for this to have happened. Wait until I get to part 4, when I discuss his escape from the Lincoln County Jail when the only witnesses were Billy and Bell and the version told by Roberts went against the historians at the time to only be confirmed by forensic science more than a century later. Thanks for watching.

    Given that we know for sure where Brushy is buried, why not exhume Brushy and take a DNA sample regarding his age? We would then get an answer that showed that he was even more likely to be BTK or absolutely not !?

      The problem with exhuming Roberts is you have to have an actual legal cause, and the individual or entity requesting it has to have legal standing to do so. This was actually tried in the early 2000s by two Lincoln County Deputy Sheriffs, who actually opened a criminal investigation into Billy's escape from the Lincoln County Jail and his killing of Bell and Olinger. In doing so, they sought to establish the identity of the man shot by Garrett at Ft. Sumner in 1881. The plan was to exhume the body at Ft. Sumner, Catherine Antrim, William Roberts, and John Miller. Unfortunately, the powers that be in New Mexico fought this every step of the way by filing a series of lawsuits and legal motions that ultimately resulted in not only stopping their investigation, but led to their resignations. Further complicating Roberts' potential exhumation, without a criminal investigation, is his lack of direct descendants, as his closest living relatives are all very distant cousins, most of which have signed affidavits supporting his claim and his exhumation. Thanks for watching.

      Well said billy died tragically at 21yrs old, tragic because he didn't have to be a cold blooded murderer as he was able to read and write which would have been an advantage at that time, but he WANTED to be a gunslinger, Robert's was not believed by his own family members, nice to read someone what calls for real evidence.

    • @brushybret

      @@brendanmcdonnell7483 During my more than 30 years of researching Roberts' claim, I've had the opportunity to interview many of Roberts descendants, most of which believe his claim to being Billy the Kid and I have about a dozen signed affidavits stating as such. As far as I'm aware, only two claimed, vocal family members have come out against him. One a very distant cousin, that never met him, and one who claims to be his niece. However, according to Roberts' family bible, he didn't have any nieces. I discuss this in the video on the Oliver P. Roberts claim. I agree that we need to demand real evidence in regard to what is fact and what is fiction regarding the true history of Billy the Kid, and that is what I try and do in my videos, which is why I always cite my sources or show the actual supporting documents. However, those that seek to discredit Roberts usually rely on rumor and gossip rather than actual evidence, which is why if you ever ask them to cite their sources, they usually get mad and leave the discussion. One question I always ask is if we know they lied when they said that Roberts was illiterate, lied when they said he couldn't speak Spanish, lied when they said he claimed to be a member of the James Gang, and lied when they claimed that he was really Oliver P. Roberts born in 1879. When do we stop giving them the benefit of doubt and ask to see their evidence before parroting their claims. And how many times does Roberts' statements have to be proven correct before we afford him at least the bare minimum. Thanks for watching.

    The argument could be made to examine Brushy Bill's remains in order to narrow down his true age. The family Bible's "birth date" is a huge discrepancy. An exact age couldn't be determined, but a 20 year difference most likely could be.
    If this were one of my cases, I'd go that route first. Especially since the location of Brushy Bill's remains are actually known. 😉

      Facial recognition says otherwise

  • @bradsullivan870
    @bradsullivan870 ปีที่แล้ว

    For as much as I wanted to believe he was the Kid, he wasn't. Robert's ears absolutely prove he isn't Billy the Kid. Being a healthcare professional, I investigated the claim that ears don't ever change without plastic surgery and is indeed a fact. The only verified photo of the Kid shows he has detached earlobes. Roberts doesn't have detached earlobes. So unless he had plastic surgery it is impossible that he is the kid. Like I said, I so wanted him to be the Kid. I wonder if he truly escaped? There are many things about this story that doesn't make sense so that is a possibility.

    • @brushybret
      @brushybret  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The person that promotes the ear theory is using a manipulated photograph. I discuss this in my video the facial recognition study conducted by two PhD scientists at the University of Texas-Austin which concluded that Roberts and the man in the tintype were a statistical match. The study used an internationally recognized facial recognition program. The same system used by law enforcement agencies all over the world. Furthermore, the methods used were peer-reviewed and published in two separate scientific papers and the results were confirmed by two independent arbiters. Here is a link to the video on Robert's physical similarities and the facial recognition study. Thanks for watching. th-cam.com/video/Y8KpyQTdBfk/w-d-xo.html

      There is a bunch of bad information being circulated online about Roberts' claim, which is why I created this series. However, if you were to fact-check these claims, you would see they're completely unfounded and not based on facts or evidence. I've made detailed videos on each of these claims and debunk them one by one and show you on the screen the supporting documents and evidence. For instance, you stated, " All of BIllys friends admitted to seeing his body after Pat Garrett shot him." However, I already did a video debunking this claim.
