My grandfather is in this at 1:03:33, he's the one in the middle. He passed away this morning. He was my best friend and more of a dad to me than my own was. I wouldn't still be alive without him. I always come back to see how different he looked, I love you papa ♡

From the time I was born in 1980 till 94 I was raised on Dead Tour. My mom home schooled me during this time. We went from coast to coast so many times that I can't count. I am really not sure how many shows I have been to... Maybe 300 before Jerry Passed, maybe more. All I know is that if I had the choice I would have chosen the same path. My mother passed about a month ago. Thanks to her and my GDF I've had more love and life experiences then most. GDF for life!!

She passed away when I was 18 after being sick for many years. She was the biggest deadhead I’ve ever known. I watch these videos for hours on end, month after month in hopes to find even a glimpse of her.. Dawn Renee Balbach, Long Beach, CA - Fare thee well, NFA Mama Bear.

Big shout out to Rock-Med, who bailed me out of a big jam 1st night of CalExpo on this tour. I spilled a vial on myself and went DEEP space. They took me in and kept ground control for me all night until I came to enough to find my way back to the Freebird Express. Instead of broke and in jail for maybe 5-10, I had every dollar I started out with and got to finish the west coast leg of the tour. I'll never forget that shit. Forever grateful.

Wow this is a journey back in time, I was at Watkins Glen in 1973. It was was a 3 day outdoor Concert. There was around 600,000 people of all ages. The Concert had 3 Performers, The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers and The Band.
6 of us from HS hitched hike up to this Outdoor Concert.
I still meet that went to this Concert, that’s 50 years ago.
I love live Music, but the shame is that kids today have to pay a small fortune for tickets. Seeing The Rolling Stones in 1975 at MSG, it was a 6 night Tour in NYC. But the best part was was that tickets were $12.50 for a seat in the Red Section of the Garden. Anyone who knows the Garden, those are great seats.
NYC back then had some many Amazing Venues. To just name a few, The Fillmore East, Academy of Music, The Beacon Theater, Avery Fisher Hall, Felt Forum, Radio City had David Bowie for 6 nights.
Personally I like the smaller Venues, the Felt Forum was great, all the seats were great.
I never followed The Dead, I guess life just got in the way …lol
But yeah everyone needs to try something new especially when they’re young. Because later on the job, mortgage, family, schools etc etc just happens.
Life is often too short and people need to enjoy as much as possible, otherwise I personally believe that people are just passing through life without taking a risk and going for it. But hey that’s just my 2 cents.
Thanks for sharing some good memories ☮️

I was lucky enough to experience this. I went to my only Dead show in Birmingham,AL about a month before Jerry passed. I consider myself grateful to have gone to the show, I remember the somber moment when people found out Jerry had passed and seeing my friends cry. The whole experience blew my mind. One of my earliest memories with my dad was riding down the road and asking him who was it I was listening to on the radio and him telling me it was The Grateful Dead. I think it may have been Ripple on the radio that day. He told me it was bluegrass music. If I could go back to one time in my life and experience it again it would be that time precisely.

This was the summer of 94. I hitchhiked from Denver to Breckenridge to hook up with my boys. We loaded up a blue 1973 VW Bus with a tank of N20 and headed for Seattle. Camping in Eugene was like a dream. The Disco Bus late night was surreal. Driving down the 101 camping on the beach, Walking through the Redwoods on acid, Rolling into Las Vegas at 2 am in the 120 degree heat and Winning 1800$ at the blackjack table when we were down to almost nothing was a miracle. I was 21 at the time and it was the best summer of my life. I have seen the vid so many times just so I can go back there. Oh how I wish I could go back there.
Im 50 now... I still travel to see music when I can, because seeing music in a different city than where you live just sounds better. Hearing it out of someone else's car sounds even better. This is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago.
Keep on Keepin on Freaks! #NFA

Vegas in '94 were my last shows. I flew over from Hawaii for them. I went up to the top of the stadium at one point when the show was going and looked over and saw that there were as many people still outside as there were inside....unsustainable was my first thought.....I will always treasure the years I went out on multi state tours selling tie dyes to get tickets and hotel rooms and to keep it going. The Grateful Dead were special and they changed my life for the better.

Vermont 95' was my last show. Jerry wasn't feeling well. Very confusing..? Jerry had a teleprompter and couldn't get the lyrics, just playing the very minimum, if that..? Really struggling. Many didn't notice, but anyone who had been to many shows, knew it was bad.
I was still shocked when Jerry passed away after the tour. It made sense, health wise, but what was everyone going to do who lived for/on tour..?!
When this was made (after the 94' tour..?!) you can see how many were considering what they'd do if there was no more touring, when they themselves were going to stop touring, and all the other possibilities.
In 95', not too long after this, that's exactly what most Deadheads were thinking.
Great film documenting when everyone started being kicked out of the parking areas by 11pm, instead of camping in the lot for the show (sometimes 3-4 days in the same spot. That was great!).
Everyone tripping balls still! Just follow the car ahead of you, they're Deadheads so they're going in the right direction (hopefully, lol, and it usually worked out much better than expected!). Great times, still.
What a long, strange trip it's been. Indeed!👍💯⚡🎶⚡💜✌️

I was born in san francisco and in 1968 I first saw part of the band at golden gate park. along with about 100 other bongo and drum playing long haired freaky girls and guys.. i was 13 years old. i was instantly hooked on the whole haight ashbury hippie culture.. It was starting to die off by then, but I lived it, for 4 years and I wouldnt have changed anything if I could.. I saw bands like the dead, the stones , hendrix, the list goes on and on.. today, when I talk to people abouth my experiences, they think I'm lying, but i'm not.. I truly miss those days.. doing the purest mind expanding lsd in the world.. It didnt ruin me, Today, I own my own business, my own home and now I live 3 min, from the beach in florida.. The last time I saw the dead was in washington dc in the mid 1980s.. couldnt find any decent herb, so I went to the concert and visited the deadfollowers in there portable citiy outside the gates.. Got some fantastic herb, a dose and a cute little dead head girl .. Oh those memories.. oh yeah also saw jerry and his merry bunch of players.. wow.. wow wow

Interesting documentary. Covered quite a few aspects of the scene and others it left out. The wonders of traveling, seeing places you've never been before. The serendipitous things that happened that really made one feel like everything was truly connected. All the folks there that were crazy. I'm talkin' bum on the sidewalk talkin' to himself crazy. Peaking on acid in the middle of the 2nd set listening to Stella Blue in some weird dream like trance. Taking a hit from a balloon and suddenly feeling on the same wave length as everybody in the lot. Living life without any concept of time other then don't miss the show. Sharing a doobie together with the poor and rich and nobody feeling out of place. Playing drums and dancing at a fevered tempo for hours and hours. Meeting people you would never get the chance to meet otherwise. Having a very spiritual or religious type of experience, a lot of that due to the Grateful Dead being the perfect music to listen to stoned on LSD. I don't think anybody mentioned Phil Lesh either in this doc, who is pretty much the coolest bass player ever. I thank my lucky stars those kids from Downey turned me on to the Grateful Dead. Biggest life changing moment I've ever had. Oh, and that punker that said if you didn't look the part you were exposed to being shunned. He was right on the money. How you looked and behaved on the scene was very important. Not to everybody, but to the majority. Which is why wearing a tie dye was an easy way of being more accepted in the community. People that think there is no ego in the counter culture are fooling themselves.

People dress/wear their hair to conform to the society that they wish to fit into. And talk. This doesn't have to be superficial - but it can be. But it's really down to the kindnesses they do, and that's the only real proof that they are genuine.

I miss these days, so very much. My first show was Buffalo, NY at 14, a kid from the mountains of Vermont…I and my friends stepped into the phenomenon, and I never left. Even when I was in the service, I never lost my love for the Grateful Dead & the people I met. Even if you drove days with no ticket, there was hope. “I need a miracle” and If no ticket, drop, wait & look for an entrance, often a weak security point, bad fence, etc if plan A & B didn’t work, plan C! Enjoy the show in the parking lot. An amazing time. The drive from show to show was apart of this entire journey too. A different time. One that I regularly look back on…Anyone remember when they’d do the fly over for the parking lot after the show? Truly amazing. I regret nothing, only that this just doesn’t exist anymore and that I couldn’t attend more shows than I had…but to be apart of this history, this experience…never to be replicated, I’m so very grateful! Musta been the roses…
If we could just do this again, everyday…together, away from all the BS of today. Unfortunately the powers to be wouldn’t allow this ever again. Not that The Dead could ever be replicated but man…I’d be willing to try! Now it’s “Burning Man” and EDM…smh. I never remember any “real” fights, skirmishes, sure but not life threatening events. Yes, there were some, a very few that exploited the scene…but Cmon. The dude the sleeps with a weapon?! Dudes strung way to tight. Drugs? Absolutely. But we all watched out for each other, not just our personal friends but everyone. With some common sense, speaking for myself & those that I traveled with, we knew enough to stay away from the hard stuff, no judgement just knew to know. Many of us were from families who were of the hippie culture, we had witnessed the effects of the “hard stuff”, so you dropped the bad and kept the overwhelming good stuff. Honestly, we usually had no issues with finding & bringing our own “stuff”…and most of anything I ever did get at a show was given. It was the nitrous dealers that made bank at shows. $3-5 a balloon as I remember, lol. Feeding & being fed by strangers, sharing, even picking up after the show…because it was the right thing to do, that’s what I remember, and the music. One story I remember to this day. On tour, many of us grew to know each other not by our birth names but by our given tour names. So you’d inevitably keep running into the many of the same folks. This one young couple had been pulled over on the way to a show in Ontario. During the stop, the officer apparently found a bottle full of an odorless, clear liquid, to which they informed the officer it was homeopathic water. The officer being a good company man turned the bottle upside down to place a little of the “water” on his finger to ensure it was not any type of “contraband”. Oops. According to the story…things took a “slight turn” for that officer. That water wasn’t water. Welcome to the show! And the couple were nearly 100 miles away by the time his ticket was punched…welcome to the show officer. It is true, shows changed as we hit the 90’s…again, you hold onto all the good memories and leave the bad. The reason many I knew went to shows was for the brother & sisterhood and of course the music, not the drugs. Awesome to see this, thank you for sharing this! Truly amazing to see this, a reminder of my own past, from so long ago.

I understood the parking lot scene, the one I remember most was in the parking lot when the Grateful Dead did the show Summer of 95 at an open air amphitheater in Reno. The nearby hotel casino was packed with deadheads for the whole weekend, and people kept doing the practical joke by going to the front desk and having Jerry Garcia paged on the intercom. That was a good laugh it’s so typical of dead head to humor

A great description of the magic of Dead shows from Kesey near the end. Watching hours of mediocre music for those few moments of magic because those moments open up a crack in the reality and let all the possibilities in. You were always guaranteed a few of those moments in every Dead show.
Jerrys spirit was so compelling the whole band and the whole scene just blossomed from it. Perhaps the seed was the acid and the cultural revolution but Jerry was the one who cultivated it better than anyone else. Ironically he didn't really relate to the scene or identify with it after the early 70's but knew enough to keep watering it. I was lucky enough to get to know the man in the late 80's and I miss him still. RIP Jerry.

I would always keep him entertained .We. All had our spot in the crowd .mine was center stage left Ten or so yards out. So my gig was would be too stay kicking back sitting on the ground for the warm up an openers .An just take in all the energy an depending on the energy I'd slowly come growing an weaving hide an seeking. Growing to the best but real slow. It got to be a thing between us , Man He really got a kick out it . An it cheered him up good. Couple times.

Show up about an hour before the boys went on with tickets and all your own goodies(never cop in the lot!)
Have a couple beers and then get your ass in the show
Dance your ass off, sing your heart out ,share the love and try to have the time of your life
After the show grab a burrito or grilled cheese, stroll shakedown a little while for something cool to buy and then go home

And no one forced you to love and embrace the Dead lifestyle. You either “got it” or you didn’t. They didn’t petition anyone to make them specially protected, they didn’t parade through your town taunting others if they didn’t embrace it they were awful people. They didn’t set up offices on campus to recruit more Dead Heads. They just peacefully vibed to their own. What a concept!

17:00 My first experience exactly. It was on after that first show (Sandstone Bonner Springs Kansas 90'). That night (and Soldier Field 92') changed my life forever. My crew was in for the music more than the lot in the beginning. Things changed around 94' and hopped on Phish tour. That was the begging of the end for me. The lot, the road, tours, and most of all, the drugs set in. After many years of hell I am back on top. Found recovery and skydiving and haven't looked back. This brought back some amazing feelings and memory. If I could go back I would not change a thing. The GD and the family showed me love and life. I unfortunately fell into the dark side of the lot but that is on me and I would not be this me today without it. BLUE SKY'S Family

I'm a young Gen X, so I only got to 2 shows when I was 18. One in fall 94 and one in summer 95 before Jerry passed. So I got to experience it firsthand luckily, but not to the extent I would have liked, although I have made it to about 60 Phish shows. They were kinda my generation's Dead replacement. In some ways they didn't quite live up, like the parking lot scene, and in some ways they surpassed the Dead too. At least in my opinion. Such as their ability to intertwine songs in a set, or even over the course of many shows. They sorta took that to the next level. (I mean, starting a song at a show, and then finishing it a year later is pretty unique)
But you definitely didn't get that same level of overwhelming kindness you saw at Dead shows. It was there in a Phish crowd, but not as pure. I guess because my generation didn't live through the 60s.

When i lived in San Antonio a good friend of mine was pulled over and searched after smelling like marijuana. This was in 1982. Since he had just over an ounce and a small crappy scale you know the kind u get to clip onto a baggie to check your weight not a professional type a dealer would have. He did a year in Huntsville prison. When he came home i didn't recognize him. He had these small circular burns all over his arms, legs, and other areas. He explained that shortly after entering jail, the people in his pod or whatever they are called each took a cigarette, said their name or nickname and put the cigarette out on his body wherever they chose. to cry out in pain got you punched and wasn't the right thing to do. Anyway, this mellow fun loving guy whom never hurt an ant had nightmares, started drinking heavily and a few years after i moved away, i heard he was killed during a robbery gone bad he had hooked up with some people he met while in prison. Way to go drug laws! Today I'm retired and in my 60's. My youngest daughter can't understand why i still have paranoia even though in Maine marijuana is legal now. I used to start shaking when i saw blue lights behind me if i had a small amount of weed. Such hypocrisy! Even the people at the top knew marijuana was not this evil sinful drug. Another wasted life due to laws being bullshit. RIP brother Leroy. MT

@@216Numbskull It was a fed prison. Maybe it wasn't Huntsville. Are there other fed prisons in Texas? It was 40 years ago. I guess my memory has faded. The cigarette burns on his body will never fade from my memory. I'm just bewildered by the hypocrisy of our laws. Doctors literally threw opiates at patients for just about any reason for decades and now unless your arm is being cut off you can't even get more than a tylenol when you are in severe pain. It's inhumane. I know, I had 6 teeth pulled in one setting, severe pain for two days. I was given advil. Had to go to the street for my meds lol. MT

I believe your friend's tragic experience in federal prison. You also saw evidence of the torture inflicted on him by other inmates. After retiring after 30 years in NY State prisons I witnessed abuse that most free people would simply find unbelievable. You can become prey to those who won't hesitate to make your life miserable. He had PTSD.

You can thank the media for once again drawing too much attention to what was a beautiful, fragile scene. What happened to the Grateful Dead is reminiscent of what happened to the Haight Ashbury. Too many came that weren't properly initiated. It was like a pitcher of kool aid where you keep adding sugar until its barely drinkable anymore. I don't blame those who wanted to tap into some of the magic, but it just got out of hand.

Interesting documentary, thank you for posting. I think it does misrepresent a few key demographics of the Deadheads. It kind of misses the significant "high achieving/college and graduate school educated crowd" in favor of the parking lot vendors and campers and "bus gypsies" and "tour heads". Although a few people discuss the issue, It also seems to downplay the heavy hard drug problems (mostly coke and especially black tar heroin along with MDMA and other assorted club drugs) that sprung up among many young Deadheads in the late 80's and 90's. When I first started following the Dead in the early 80's, the Band may have been all doped up but the crowd was mostly tripping & stoned--seeing powders or other hard drugs among the crowd back then was very rare. By 1990, that had all changed. RIP Jerry Garcia & The Grateful Dead.

OMG! I was there! When I was 14 I went to that GD show in Seattle. I never got tickets, just hung out with my brother & all the hippies outside. I had edibles for the first time, it was a "ganja rice crispy treat". That was one of the coolest things I've ever experienced, everyone was cool & really friendly! We stayed there all day meeting all kinds of people & smoking bowls with everyone. I bought a pair of "Bob's 420 Hemp Gear" jeans made of hemp from a deadhead. They had a secret hidden stash pocket & my friends would always borrow them so they could seek bud or whatever into concerts & other places that pat you down or check your bags. ✌

Thanks for posting this. Such a fine time to be alive and young! So grateful I got to experience so many truly beautiful people and shows at Deer Creek. The camping scene was absolutely amazing. I'll never forget being blissed out and wandering around Riverbend and sharing my goodies with my brothers and sisters. My friend meeting this dude and hitting it off famously. He invited us to a "rainbow gathering". Very hush hush kinda thing. About 20 min after the best acid I ever had kicked in, a whopper of a thunderstorm moved in. So naturally I climbed a tree and revelled in the power of mother nature while about 50 of my best friends danced and played and sang in the rain. It was sad to see the scene deteriorate like it did. I remember thinking in 93 that it was getting a bit weird. Enjoyed the shows in 94 but knew they were my last. Some shady shit in the lot and Jerry was clearly not well. There was enough magic left when I saw them live to change my life for the better!

#2 In the early 80's I could see the love and community. People made their own newspapers, hand designed tour shirts sold on a blanket, hand made things. People seemed to care about one another. By the time the balloons came around I could see it all falling apart. Fights, people getting robbed. Not so much caring. Super fkd up scenes. Not the family I remembered from the hippies I new as a kid who taught me to be a caring person. Saw my last Dead show in 1991.
