EXPOSING the Toilet Paper Industry

  • The toilet paper industry has been confusing people (like me) for years now. "We're 4x more absorbent than the competitors! Our roll lasts twice as long as the leading bargain brand! Rub it on your face or we're gonna freak out!"
I wanted to do my own research and compare as many different types of toilet paper as I could to see who really is the best. Length, absorbency, effectiveness at TPing someone's house, we're testing it all today. Enjoy!

The weirdest part about the Charmin bears is that there's 3 completely separate yet strangely similar families of toilet paper obsessed bears. Red bears who like stronger stuff. Blue bears who rub the soft stuff on their face. Then brown bears for the rest. Either that or the entire family changes color based on the toilet paper currently in their house. I hate those bears.

If I go into my attic I will find about 8 different brands, and the only one that I can remember the name of is babysoft.

So for the Scott brand you said "there's no practical use for this" because honestly it does seem awful, but FUN FACT it is the top recommended brand for homes with septic systems because it will actually dissolve in the septic tank instead of turning into a big wad in the tank. Yeah. I live overseas, but our version of 1-ply is the only thing that doesn’t wreck the septic tank. It kinda sucks, but it totally beats the plumbing bill/being covered in crap depending on whether you’ve worked out how to unclog it with a high pressure hose.

Storytime: so I am scarred for life by Charmin. I will not buy any toilet paper with the word "strong" on it because when I read that word on a package my eye starts twitching and my cheeks clench in self defense. How this happened is when my husband and I first got married we were broke. Broke broke. Like crying in the checkout line counting pennies for a loaf of bread broke. We needed toilet paper one day and it was snowing and the busses weren't running so we had to buy from the gas station we could walk to. All they had was a four pack of Charmin Ultra Strong. I get this shiz home and open it and I was dumbfounded. You're not kidding about it being paper towels. I'm totally convinced that it's just cheap paper towels they buy and slice down into thirds and resell. That stuff will sand the paint off your car. And we were stuck with it cause we had NO money to buy a different brand until payday. Worst $6 I ever spent. We literally had to dampen it with water before using it.

So, as a long time user of Scott, I'll explain why I waste my money on it; it's not about the absorbency, it's about what it doesn't leave behind. Yes, I have to use more, but it leaves no toilet paper dingleberries or fuzz. The super soft toilet papers leave behind so much fuzz and debris, I don't feel clean. And honestly, a roll of Scott lasts me forever, even tho I use more per wipe, it somehow balances out. Also, whenever I'm forced to buy something other than Scott, it seems like my toilet clogs up super easily, that Charmin & Quilted Northern is just too soft and too thick.

    • @Pip8448

I'm not a Scott fan, but I do agree that the super soft plushy stuff is terrible for leaving behind powdered paper and tears super easy leaving bits on you. I greatly dislike finding tiny wads of previous powders in crevasses I didn't know got sweaty until these clumps showed up.

I was raised on regular Scott because of septic issues, and every time I have had to live with someone who prefers anything else I am shocked that people think it's better... it's too thick to get into all the crevices, it pills up and leaves little pieces behind on the seat (so one could imagine where else it's leaving pieces...), and it's like... too slidey to get a proper hold on if it's folded even once??? I will never shut up about this, regular Scott for life.

Have you tried the Scott brand with the ripples? I believe the label is purple (we're out, so I can't check, sadly). It's my favorite for being a nice halfway point. It's soft, but doesn't leave bits behind. Thick, but not too thick to wad or fold or whatever. And the price is closer to the cheapy junk stuff than to the big brands.

It is soft enough for comfort, durable enough to get the job done yet if you place a sheet into water and let it sit...you will find that the MM almost completely breaks down and dissolves. It was everything, he was trying to get something done for his job, and it was already kind of a struggle for him cuz it was hot and windy and then the baby runs through it and he seriously cared more about the baby having fun than all of the stuff he was dealing with. You mentioned that even though Charmin is twice as absorbent, Scott is more than twice the length. You could check the package for how many squares a roll has and divide it by the amount of squares the coffee went through to find out how many uses you get out of a roll. First you'd have stack enough Scott toilet paper to find out to find out how many layers it takes to absorb five drops of coffee.

@@eric_d Okay maybe amount of sheets is in tiny print at the bottom of the roll, it is not prominently printed on the roll. Still the size of the roll could still change at any time, all they have to do is change the fine print and put a different number and you wouldn't realize it changed.
Just like the fine print on cereal for example, today it may say 9.7 Ounces but in 6 month you probably won't remember the old size, and then it could be reduced to 9.4 Ounces. If you use metric just convert it. Of course, it will be the same price as before with less cereal.
Next when the companies can't shrink the size anymore, they introduce a new larger size with 25%* more for free. Then in a month or so they drop off the free part and charge more for the roll because it is now bigger. Then the process of shrinking begins all over again.
      *The free amount may vary.
If you don't agree with me that is fine.
