Something I learned from Adam Savage is that when you want to do something but aren't inspired to work on a project, do workshop infrastructure.
It's one of those things that helps everything that comes after it, organising stuff so that when you want to do a conversion you aren't spending 2 hours digging through bins to find "the perfect bit" means more time to hobby.

@@VinceVenturella Gives so many good ideas too, going through it. They way I do it is I sort things by type (arms, legs, heads, pouches and backpacks, shields, armorplates,...) and also have thematical boxes (Cyberpunk, grimgothic, nurgle/undead)

This is actually my nightmare. i prefer to keep the bits on the sprues if there are a a lot of leftovers and if there isnt i cut away the empty and if need be glue parts of the sprue together for a head etc. Cutting and cleaning things i might not use ever is time taken away from things i will use. also partial assembly of a head might lead to extra work cutting the head in half afain later if i only need the front half sticking out of the side of the skaven monstrosity for instance.
Having a system that works for you is the important part however and you have certainly helped a lot of people with this video aswell as horrified others that already have different systems in place.
I remember attending a workshop with the incredible Kirill Kanaev, and afterwards, I was musing to a friend about how "sure was great, but I'll probably never use any of this".
My friend, the equally brilliant Tue Kaae, then responded with these wise words: "Add the knowledge to your toolbox. Then you can always grab it if you need to."
I feel like this after watching most of Vince's videos. Sure, some of it fits my style of painting - or in this case how I hobby, and I implement it right away, but most of it I just categorize in the "oh, guess you can do it that way, too, but I sure don't want to"-category.
With that said, I want to add that I, too, love what Vince is doing here. I only discovered the channel recently, but it is by far my favorite source for anything related to this wonderful hobby.
I want to say thank you to both of you, glad this was helpful and I agree, more tools in the toolbox is always valuable.
I love the idea of glueing parts that have to go together for the bits box.

Love those "bead storage" boxes. Most of mine are from old fishing equipment, but I've used them for everything from model cars to legos. Very versatile and so useful for sorting small things you dont know what to do with

Great topic! This is the perfect way to set yourself up for future projects.
Also, it's a good thing to do between projects when you can't decide what to work on next, a big problem when you have a big pile of shame!

Brilliant !!!! i just put all my bits into containers and during that i started gluing pieces together to save space and make life easier later, but some pieces i did keep seperate because i could see myself using that bit ina couple different ways than intended, so while most of the time i will glue the pieces that go together, together, there are times when i wont, but i will put those pieces in the same compartment
I love the little drawings next to the name labels 😄 The scrawny Phoenix for the high elves is my favourite. Well timed video, too! I just converted my bits & tool storage from old cardboard bix & warhammer promo plastic bag to an actual set of clear plastic bins. Really cuts down on the hoarders aesthetic lol

Hey man, instead of bead storage, go over to the fishing area of your local Wal-Mart and get the plastic insert dividers for tackle boxes, they have adjustable dividers. For those big bits make a big compartment. 👍👍

Do something similar but with Tackleboxes. The only difference is that they come with modifiable sized compartments.
Another good option for sure.
I used to keep pieces on the sprues, but basically ran out of space so I've started using ziplock bags organised by group (e.g. Imperil Guard, Space Marine, etc). So far I've not had to deal with any large pieces, but I've started collecting larger ziplock bags in anticipation
Yes, I have a few ziplocks as well, my only problem is it's harder to then find the specific bit I need versus these (as they are all ust piled in together). But it is cheaper. ;)
@@VinceVenturella And more of a space saver than the boxes for the quantity of modelling I usually do but if that changes I'll probably move on to a different system again 😊

I only recently started organizing my bits and got struck with the "oh my god I need to find ways to use those otherwise I'll run out of space in no time" syndrome.
Now finding decent 3rd party or just good spare legs and torsos is slowly turning into an obsession XD.
Anyway, good suggestions in this vid!

Ah man I've been painting only the cheapest reaper minis for years now. No bits, heck I'm not even sure if I'm just bad at edge highlights or that I'm just trying to highlight bad edges.
Unpainted reaper bones minis are themselves bits. The arms, legs and heads are so easy to remove and attach to other minis.
The issue is when you attach hard plastic to a reaper bones mini as they are a heavier material and will cause the bones pvc to sag.
I painted reaper bones minis for about a year into the hobby, after trying other more expensive, minis I am never going back.
That being said, they are absolutely fine if you want something to put on the table for i.e. DnD, but IMO not if you want to paint something more detailed 😄
To be fair and all cynical irony aside on my part. Im trying to "collect them all" so to speak in regards to having a painted collection of dnd minis. Reaper minis painted to a tabletop standard is the only way to go for one guy to afford and paint all of that. I've done hundreds and its barely a scratch in the total collection of monsters. That said I love the slow burn of building the collection and my painting skills are really really getting honed on these guys. I dont want to sound like I'm completely down on reaper cus really im a fan of the niche. I started out a newb proud of a crappy paint job of an orc to throw down on a table and 3 years later i am daydreaming about color theory and your spending more time practicing new techniques than actually getting a mini painted, so reaper definitely was a gateway plastic drug. I just lament the lack of bits for projects, especially terrain.
No issue, if you're having fun, it's fine. I will say things like bones often have soft edges and make it hard to highlight.
The new reaper minis are actually getting pretty good. Bones black (and now bones USA) are pretty sharp material wise and the sculpts are getting better and better.
i used to glue everything together but however i found myself sometimes cutting parts apart because kitbashing and converting so i stopped because it was annoying and sometimes part broke or were damaged when i needed to split then apart again .... but i store everything more or less the same way u do
That's fair, for me, it's mainly because I hate losing small parts or pairing them later. :)

You have a lot of content about making bases, but my question is this: how do you properly base a miniature that sits on some plastic rock/pillar/etc. How do you blend it in?
For example I'm about to do DoK Witch Aelves, and all of them are jumping off these weird ruin parts. I'd like to paint them separately from the base, but I don't know how do I then stick them on and make it look nice.
Maybe there's a video in this.
I just put some mud up onto the rock compeltely. You meld it into the ground cover (literally) buy putting your paste or grit up onto the rock.

I love that for other people organizing the kitchen is a tough deal, but for us hobbyists it's way less threatening than our grey plastic pile! :D
Start with your kitchen to distract your pile, I am sure you will be able to sneak up on it that way - don't let it see you sweat! I believe in you!

Vince, is there ever a time you don’t use this glue when building? I have jabbed my thumb and finger rescuing push fit miniatures with de-bonder from their tenacious gaps. But it just occurred to me this will be the only glue I ever need for building models start to finish. Wow!
Honestly, not often, if it's plastic, this is basically what I am doing.
Great video as usual! I have an unrelated question thats been bugging me: How do you decide which temperature your shadows are? Art theory says that shadows should be cool-er and highlights warm-er. However I also love the warm shadows with e.g. violet.
So the general guideline is warm highlights (i.e. day, the sun, fires) have cold shadows. Where as cold highlights (moonlight, artificial lights) will have warm shadows. There are more complex color theory items beyond that, but that simple rule will generally keep you on the right track.
Vince, great video. Looks like you are using sprue goo to glue those bits together versus regular thin cement. Is that right? If so, do you typically use that for figure assembly versus thinner stuff. I just hate cleanup and assembly so always looking for a better way.....
Yep, that's what I was using and what I generally use, makes it so you don't have to worry about gaps so much.

Question I've started using oils, and everytime I wipe on the paper towel my brush picks up little fibers from the paper, any way around that? Should I put a little water down on the paper towel? Thanks a million
Easy solution, don't use a paper towel. I am very picky about my paper towels, I am bounty all the way, but here is a better option. Get an old white t-shirt or something similar that is torn or useless and just use that. The cloth will clean better and you won't get fibres.

Hey Vince, I dunno if you've done a video like this but what are some alternatives to edge highlighting. My hours at work recently got shifted and I barely have time to paint mini's at the moment. I'm just looking for some techniques to make angles pop, add some contrast and make the minis look decent (mostly at arms reach, im far from great) but have it be somewhat time friendly (which i know sounds like miracle-work lol)
I've done a couple of different videos, but here is a simple idea. Do a light drybrush with a white or similar bright color. Do this before your main colors. Then paint the colors on as glazes and the edges will be picked up if you are pulling toward the center of the plate.
How about a new series of videos: "Paint with Vince"?
Darren Latham made one on painting Lord of Blights. I bought the miniature but I have not yet gotten around to paint it.
I saw the "Paint the skin" part and got quite overwhelmed of the minute layering upon layering ad nauseum.
I have seen parts of a few of the PMP End of Month Review and the lack of contrast issue (1-5) appears on most of the submissioned minis.
Maybe if you choose a mini that is normally readily available to but (but please not just a space marine) something that lends to doing contrast levels 1-5 and you demonstrate how to paint it all the way?
Other themes could follow.

It's interesting, because series are almost always content that doesn't do well, but I really like the idea of what you're talking about, I just need to figure out how to capture it properly, s so much of what I am doing is just constant, constant adjustment.

Hey Vince. This is awesome and something I’ve started to do myself after a project. Do you clean the bits up? I.e. remove the mold lines, file the bits too before storing or do you just do that when you actually go to use them?
I give them a basic scrape, I don't worry about making them perfect, but I get the basics done so its easier later.

Yeah, my general method is just what you say, heads, limbs, weapons, general bits, etc. I think I mentioned it in there. For the most part, it works, eventually you will have items that break that system, so I always have a few "catch-all pockets"

@@gondogeek If there was ever a turn of phrase I used that a regret more, I can't think of it. :) - No, you don't put it in the oven, I was making a joke allusion to cooking shows to make reference to the fact that I had already done what I showed you on screen to another bottle 2 days earlier, then let everything melt. You don't put it in the oven, I was just making a joke in the way they assemble everything for a cake or something on a cooking show and then magically pull a baked cake out of the oven. :) - Just put the sprue in, let it sit for 2 days, give it a good shake, you're all set.

I don't understand how people end up with so many small model bits. Are they just printing everything they think they might like? At that point, it may be time to let the 3d printer rest for a bit.
Many model kits you buy have extra bits, espcially more wargame/army type bits for alternate builds/etc. :)
So i'm watching you cut out the bits off the sprue. I can't help but notice how close to the model you are cutting and what side of the cutters you're using.
Don't you find you damage the model and then have repair it/ fudge it afterwards? It's tearing parent material out of the bit or cutting off the surface detail.
I really am curious as to what your answer is to this. I get it "saves time", i get you've been doing it a long long time and you can fix anything...
I gots ta know... for future me.
Sure, I use flat edged clippers for this very purpose, I don't really ever see any damage to the mini, in fact, with as close as I am cutting, I usually still have to scrape some away, never really had an issue. It's really about just having a nice, sharp set of completely flat side, and closing clippers and you should be able to press right up without danger.
