    A hack for your first hack. Use painter's tape on the lids of the boxes. You can write on it what's in them and the tape comes off easily, so you can reuse the box over and over. Especially handy when you use them just for WIP things and will be swapping out what's in them often. We actually use this a lot when doing mealpreps and want to label what's in a tub. No more scratching out the marker or trying to guess what yellow curry is in it when you've made 3 types of curries in the last weeks (especially when one of those tubs somehow manages to get lost at the back of the freezer for 3 months...). If you regularly go through projects and just need the bins for quick storage, using painter's tape for the labels works wonders and won't leave icky residue.
    I also use painter's tape to mask when I prime, but I know that some brands will leave residue behind when you do that, though I've not had that experience yet.

    The last one, the brush conditioning, was taught to me by the best painter at my local store. Solid gold, that one. These are all good stuff, but I was glad to see that one.

      I have never even heard of brush cleaner before now. I haven't done much painting, but enough to have ruined some (fortunately cheap) brushes. Definitely have to use this tip.

    The bead containers are priceless for bits / model WIPs - Hobbycraft (UK) have a range in various sizes with removable inserts

    I use the bead boxes when I'm assembling my minis - to clip the bits that belong to one mini together. works great.

    As an addendum, the inside of a faction's book will have sheets of paper that can be used as backgrounds for images as well!

    As soon as the video started I though to myself "If Angela does not mention bead boxes, I will". Hard to get rid of old part even if you don't use them for ywars but by cutting then off sures you save 90%+ space.

    Excellent advice. My big brain was obviously was overthinking the whole assembly process before priming. I was originally gonna put the putty on each individual piece of the figure on a separate platform as I spray them down but your idea is far superior.

  • @dougsundseth6904

    I actually prefer Silly Putty to poster tack for masking. It's less tacky, so it's easier to remove, but otherwise it works just the same.

    • @HobbyNight
      @HobbyNight  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting, does it leave a residue on the miniature at all? I recall some putty products like that are slick to the touch and I am curious if that residue feeling is left behind on the mini.

    • @dougsundseth6904
      @dougsundseth6904 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@HobbyNight I haven't noticed any residue, nor have I seen any issues with paint adherence after using the silly putty. It's particularly nice for irregular camouflage patterns, since it's easy to form, the edges keep paint spray out well, and it peels up without damaging any earlier layer of paint at all.

  • @j.s.connolly8579
    @j.s.connolly8579 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    WOW! THIS is all VERY COOL! The old saying of "You are NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN NEW THINGS" is SO TRUE! I'm 55... I've been a Modeler/Painter/Scratch Builder for 50 yrs. so I've been at this for a VERY LOOOONNNGGG TIME! It's Nice to learn NEW "HACKS" even at MY age!
    So I will pass a few along to all of YOU!
    "REALISTIC METAL CHIPS" If you want the LOOK of Realistic Metal Chips on something, the BASE COAT is the KEY! I use "STAINLESS STEEL EPOXY APPLIANCE PAINT"
    I spray 2 to 3 coats... THEN I apply whatever agent I am going to use to make the Main Paint Color NOT Adhere to the surface. For that "AGENT" I will use either Liquid Latex OR "MUSTARD"! YES that's RIGHT! I use a CONDIMENT! and it REALLY, WORKS WELL! Try it!
    But it's the BASE LAYER of EPOXY PAINT In Stainless Steel that is as I said the "KEY"! It will give you a SUPER Durable "METAL" Layer that MOST if not ALL OTHER PAINTS will NOT Remove! It's EPOXY so it's VERY VERY TOUGH!!!
    I used this technique on my "Darth Vader Chest and Belt Boxes" and it looks AWESOME! :D
    They OTHER "HACK" is... well it's not REALLY a "HACK" as more of a "SUGGESTION"... I have a REALLY NICE Set of Paint Brushes for EVERY Paint Medium possible that is for "WHITE PAINTS ONLY"! THIS Ensures that ALL my "WHITES" Will STAY that way and won't get tainted by other colors! Because I have found that no matter HOW HARD You try... not matter HOW MUCH or LONG You soak brushes {Which you shouldn't "SOAK" TOO LONG it will RUIN them!} Darker Paints and even Lighter ones like "Yellows" and "Silvers/Metallics" WILL STILL BLED OFF into they White! And as I said... this goes for OILS/ENAMELS, ACRYLICS, or whatever you are using!
    Another "Suggestion" is go to your local "DOLLAR STORE{S}" and Look for Small, Sealable Containers for your "CUSTOM" Color Mixes! These will keep those "SPECIAL COLORS" Still usable and they are SUPER Cheap! I ALSO Save/Use those small "SOLO" brand Containers that Ketchup, Hot Sauces, Etc. come in from Restaurants!
    If you ask them REALLY Nicely... they MIGHT give you a few, Clean "UN-USED" ones! :D
    Lastly... ALWAYS look at things like Old Super Glue or Acrylic Glues or whatever "CAPS"! They can be used for LOTS of things! I used a Super Glue Cap to make an old style "Jet Engine Exhaust" for my small Green Goblin "Bat Flyer" figure because I didn't LIKE the way the original looked! These can ALSO be used on 1/72 Scale Model Jets as well! OR If you have any "MINI-FIGS" that need something that needs and old style jet engine "Exhaust" these work PERFECTLY!
    Sooo That's about it! I hope what I wrote helps others!

      Museum Putty is super useful like that! 👍

    • @schroecat1
      @schroecat1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blue tack does everything. I mostly use it to stick miniatures to a base for painting, which allows me to spend time making more interesting bases and not have to worry about the miniatures colours getting on the base, or vice versa. It's always really hard to get a base right when there's legs and stuff in the way. XD

    This was a great video! As someone who's leaving one hobby and insearch for another, I've been soaking up little tips like this. Funny enough, the brush conditioner thing is something I knew from an oil painting class I took in college. I really like the museum putty hacks here.

      I actually learned that particular trick from one of my sequential art professors in college. It seems to not be very commonly know in the hobby space but I feel like it really should be!

    Been using these boxes for quite some time. I highly recommend! 😊
    An additional note on the boxes: you can buy some dry erase tape and line the inside of the lid with it. That way if you want to cut bits out, you can label the lid with the part numbers. Since its dry erase material, you can reuse the box very easily for WIP builds!

    I play Kill Team and use those tackle boxes that look like those bead boxes you showed, cut up plastic Walmart bags for padding. Also, a MUCH easier way to prime... prime on the sprue. Before you even clip ANYTHING.

    • @HobbyNight
      @HobbyNight  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice, I have known a lot people people that use the as army transports or storage. They are very versatile!
      I prefer to have the models partially assembled so that I can see more easily see how things connect. That way I don't accidently paint something the wrong color.

    • @zackmarkham4240
      @zackmarkham4240 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HobbyNight I prime on the sprue, but paint on the sprue. I do a little assembly before painting, though. Like gluing torsos and legs together and such. I also divide the bits up into baggies, one baggie is a dude. I then 'assembly line' paint. One color at a time, baggie-by-baggie. Base coat everything, then move on through the colors depending one amount intended on the model, metallics dead last. I don't understand how people can paint or prime fully assembled. there will be places the primer and paint can't get to due to spacing.

    That's interesting because I use those organizers for my Citadel paint. Fits any standard size pot. I never thought to label them though. It would help to keep warm colors, cool colors, earth tones, and monochromatic.

    • @HobbyNight
      @HobbyNight  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool! Can you close the lid still or do you pop the lid off and just leave the trays open topped?

    • @ballsdynamite
      @ballsdynamite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Closes just fine. I have it split up into about 4 major sections, and I've always wanted to have them in their own little quadrant, but they always end up all over the place. I'm sure my wife would be excited to make special little labels for each one.

    Coconut Body Oil works amazing well in conditioning or preserving your brushes after cleaning them aswell - clean like normal, then just put the oil on your brush and work it to a tip with your fingers and set aside until ready to use (my wife taught me this and it's awesome on my more expensive nicer brushes)

      True! May def be different in other countries. I'm looking at bead/craft storage which tends to be a little cheaper than Mini-hobby. The boxes I showed were about $8 American each.

      @@HobbyNight awesome, glad to hear 😊 I haven’t heard of museum putty 🤷‍♂️ here in australia the main thing is blue tac which is pretty sticky, good for holding minis to cork handles but i wouldn’t use it on anything with paint already on it 😉

    • @HobbyNight
      @HobbyNight  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s what I have been told by a number of people, so I think I will be avoiding it for any masking purposes if I pick it up.
      Hm, Museum Putty is also a product used for securing objects to a mantle in case of earth quack tremors or the like. So maybe if there is a product like that in Australia, it might be similar to what I am using.

    • @JakeDogg-RIP
      @JakeDogg-RIP 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HobbyNight to me the museum putty sounds more like blue tac, but I’m sure it’s not exactly the same, but might be worth looking into the therapeutic putty for masking, just to be safe, I would hate for u to ruin a paint job if it can be avoided 😬

    Just be careful with that first suggestion. You will find with some kits that some parts only connect to other specific parts. If you put all of them in one bucket you no longer know which legs were part 12 vs. part 13 for example and it can lead to issues.

    What is zinaful prime?

    • @HobbyNight
      @HobbyNight  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A zenithal prime uses multiple contrasting colored primers (most often a black, grey and then white) all sprayed from one angle (usually top down) to help create a stronger highlights and shadows while painting. It's especially effective with contrast paint.

  • @RainMakeR_Workshop

    If museum putty is just Bluetac, then doesn’t it damage the paint? Bluetac is too tacky for the job and rips off the paint. Or is museum putty lower tack?
    Though I use silly putty anyway, lower tack, leaves no residue and will absorb paint after a bit of needing, making it reusable and long lasting.

    • @HobbyNight
      @HobbyNight  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Admittedly, bluetac is a bit 'hardier' than the museum putty. (You can kinda see how it's 'gooier' than bluetac in the vid.)
      I haven't used Bluetac as much, but it hasn't stripped when I've been careful. But, I def can see them behaving a little differently.
