    Thank you for the video.
    I had guests in a rental that lost power from a storm. I was in a pinch when my generator fired right up but wasn't putting out a charge. Was able to be back up and charging in a half hour.

    Fastest method is get a surge protector outlet strip and plug it into any of the 120 outlets on the generator. Make sure the surge protector strip is in the off position. Get any battery, 6 volts or higher, and either use 2 wires or I like to take an old 3 prong plug and strip the hot and neutral wires and hook them to the battery terminals and plug it into the power strip. With all this plugged into the generator and the power strip off start the generator. With the generator running and the battery hooked to the power strip, toggle the on/off switch on the power strip. You will hear a rev change in the generator and this will excite the windings and start the generator to produce power again. Now unhook all the battery and power strip and test or plug in a device and it will work. This happens because the magnetic field in the windings will dissipate when not run for a long duration. The bigger the unit the faster it seems to dissipate.

      what happens if its NOT in need of getting excited. will things spark or pop? will that do more harm?

    • @johnholmes1401
      @johnholmes1401 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roogermoore1 depends, do you have and voltage coming out, even like 1-3 volts? Are all your breakers reset and functional? Have you taken the cover off the generator housing and checked for wires to ground? Also you could have smoked brushes and no connection to the rotor anymore. Lots of things could be the issue. If you get some voltage still could be a bad AVR, auto voltage regulator, if your generator has one and not all do

      @@johnholmes1401 thanks for replying. a new voltage regulator arrived just now. I'll replace it and see what happens. I think the entire panel is bad, nothing coming out of any socket with the multimeter test I did. I took the cover off and the wires are all in place and not burned. the reset buttons are frozen and won't move. I did buy a new generator just in case I cannot fix it. I'll return it if I have to, the price was right for a 9K. The generator has saved me 6 times at least when the power went out because of ocean storms. can't imagine being without one now

    Apparently these troybilt gens are different. I have one with the Briggs S. engine, 5500 running
    watts 8550 starting or something like that. but no AVR. instead 2 wires from stator to a small
    circuit board with diodes on brushes assembly. with gen working 7.5 volts a.c. turned to 7.5
    volts d.c. to brushes to excite the wound rotor.

    is that a temporary fix? should the regulator be replaced anyway? is it still working today?

    • @bryansprojects3570

      It has worked flawlessly since. It has also gone 6 plus months without being run and works perfectly, go figure.

    • @bryansprojects3570

    Great video, I think the trick with the trouble is you have to pull the trigger I don’t know if you did or not

    Are you attaching the battery to the brushes or the voltage regulator. I have a similar model and similar problem but the guts are a little different.

    Can I just hook it up to car battery ?? Or does it need to be a battery charger ??

    • @bryansprojects3570

      One more question, once you hook it up, turn the generator on and let the battery charge for a couple minutes??

    • @bryansprojects3570
      @bryansprojects3570  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just run a few seconds. Shut it off and the hook the voltage regulator back up and see if charges.

      I suspected that the voltage regulator might be bad. Turns out it wasn't and this repair required no parts, I just needed to polarize the generator.
