Why even mention we might not like how it looks? It's a breath of fresh air. I'm sick and tired of everyone having their own strat and tele. For fuck's sake...
Agreed. I'm f-in getting one. Definitely the burst. Annie Clark is badass. I don't listen to her but she's an amazing artist. Wouldn't matter to me who made this. It's awesome.
I think it looks fantastic, especially the red and blue variants. I love that they're going for a very non-standard body shape. If I was looking to drop $2k on a guitar this would be in the conversation.
Yeah, the blue StVincent and the pink Albert Lee are both on my wish list. I don't get all the hate for the shapes, the world would be boring if we only had Strats and Les Pauls. I have a Les Paul sat next to me right now and although I would like to get a better one someday, I don't ever see myself needing two or more, I would rather have four or five completely different guitars (or six or seven....)
I got a St. Vincent in blue when they first came out. It’s a killer! Five great sounds, very well made & put together. Neck feels lovely. I personally think it looks cool too. :) The knobs and pickguard are intended, I think, to give the guitar some 1950s kitschy Bakelite vibe. Annie Clark (St. Vincent) played an old Harmony model for awhile, and 2nd/3rd-tier guitars like that typically use cheap plastic knobs.
People aren't all that familiar with mini hums because they aren't used that often, but I've always liked them. They have an accented "gnarl" as compared to normal humbuckers. A slightly smaller pickup field brings it back towards almost a P90 tone. Really though, it's it's own thing...again much like a p90. I like the entire design of the guitar, and all respect to St.Vincent and Music Man for bringing the first truly unique guitar to be released in a long time to market. I think that in one form or another this guitar will last quite a while. It's a keeper. Thanks for the great video!
This guitar is gorgeous an sounds great too! This and the Armada are my favorite designs in the Music Man lineup I was never much of a "traditionalist".
It looks great on Annie! The raised plastic on the back is like a Strat and they came with one ply pick guards originally too. The guitar does have some Strat sensibilities and also looks like a cross between a Gibson Firebird and Explorer. Annie is geared more towards the stranger sounds vs. shredding so hence the limited fret access near the higher frets. I've yet to see one in a music store though.
+ Dan Luna - Really!?! That's very interesting to me from a genetics standpoint, since not everyone can move their fingers like Tuck or Annie, no matter how much they practice.
I think this guitar looks bitchin' awesome, and I really like how all the details and angles work together. I'm bored to tears by me-too designs and I hope somebody emulates (== blatantly steals) this guitar shape at an accessible price point.
I think I like this shape. Not sure, until I open with a jazzy jump Blues working in the Flintstone theme song motif and watch the crowd reaction. Pickguard color needs to be modified though
Great sonic walk-through, thanks! Henning nails it - the reviews do not do enough justice to the guitar. When the details are considered, as well as its full spectrum, as well as the cleans, this is a fantastic sounding axe! On the other hand, we have to give kudos to EB for keeping the promo videos in line with St. Vincent's stylistics - a nice touch, for sure. Overall, this instrument requires us to make some effort into researching it; what one can find after scratching a bit of surface, so to speak, is quite astonishing. I am eyeing on this axe.
I'm not normally a fan of gold hardware either, but something about that combination of shape, hardware, burst and pickguard all REALLY work well together!
I think these pickups really bring out the character of my fuzzes. It's definitely interesting. I had to settle for the Sterling version. I think I will eventually put actual Dimarzios in it, though.
I love the St Vincent Model. So many guitars are all the same, but it's different. The one thing is that I'm a big guy at 6'5" (196 cm) and I think the body would be a bit small. I've also heard that it's a bit neck heavy. So honestly if they made a model with a larger body it would be something I REALLY want. That or a purple HH Albert Lee. A bigger body on the St. Vincent with a purple burst, oh lordie.
Great review. BTW, the cost of recessing the rear covers is not due to the routing, it's due to the difficulty in finishing the edges perfectly without wood tearout or buffing through the finish on the edges. Here, the edges of the hole are covered so imperfections caused by sanding and buffing are irrelevant, and the process can be done much more quickly/efficiently.
Your timing is perfect Henning!!! I was thinking and looking this morning for this type of review for this guitar! Thank you! Also, I too am not a fan of Gold hardware at all, but with this guitar, and this finish, it is beautiful!! Maybe the only example of gold hardware I've actually liked.
The Sterling St Vincent has a maple neck, and is $599. I'd love to meet one in a pawn shop someday. To inset the back covers on a CNC machine would take more like 15 - 20 seconds rather than 2 minutes. If I complained about anything it would be the headstock but I'd probably get used to it. Even though I don't play anymore I have a guitar crush the blue one with a maple neck.
Best review. I like the look (got the black one with the white guard, it looks like Klaus Nomi). Fully agree though that it’s shockingly versatile. Only thing I don’t like is the headstock.
According to the music man website the positions are 5 neck & bridge, 4 all three (in parallel), 3 neck (in series), 2 Middle (in series) & 1 bridge (in series). Very confusing I think.
If only i had watched this video before! Last week I went to Anderton's and there was this guitar hanging on the wall, dissuaded by the funny shape I didn't even tried it!
The spring cover plate on the back of a Stratocaster is not recessed either. If it was, the vibrato block would hit it. The St Vincent body is 1/8" thinner than the Strat. Take the covers off and check how close the springs, vibrato block and electronics are to the covers.
I’ve always loved that design. And btw the tuners work because of the headstock design. No tilt back, strings that go straight after going through the nut.
Totally agree with the CNC-backplate question, but I was wondering if it could be a choice, since the body is thinner than the average guitars and "abusing" the tremolo could result in the block touching the backplate.... or maybe they're simply lazy
I think this is designed to suit the anatomical differences of the female shape? Might be worth asking Kianna how it feels strapped on - behave! - compared to a Strat. THAT shape compensates for the... er... wider hips?
This guitar was explicitly designed to be ergonomical for women, with, and I quote Annie here, "room for a boob or two". I'd say yes, better ask Kiana if there's a difference wearing it strapped high on up.
Hi Henning... Hope you and the family are doing well... I have Found My guitar... I'm so saving for it... St Vincent. Do you think it's better than Paolette Guitars ? Troy from Alantic City 🌆
I think it's a (stupid) tradition of MM to put the back plates on top of the back. They usually make them out of pickguard material however so this is certainly a step up!
Need? Nothing. It's just that at the end of this video you said more was coming. But good enough if not. I appreciated this one very much. Thanks and please keep up the good work.
Check out the Stealth Black version of this beast! It looks like a completely different guitar, and I guaranty you'll never see one at your local blues jam!
I thought it was ridiculous when I first seen it, then I saw it in all black. I liked it... So when I saw the blue again I actually thought that's a bloody nice guitar. I think it looks better in the non-vintagey colours like blue, but I do like that one. Gorgeous neck.
I've never seen a humbucker and also a single coil on the bridge on you Steve Morse guitar I've got an Eddie Van Halen striped and a Tommy Thayer Epiphone signatures
I think the shape of the guitar is awesome by the way. They have certainly managed to make a unique looking guitar that could still very much be a classic, which is insanely hard. It is certainly in Firebird territory, but much more elegant.
F.D. English - I absolutely agree with you. Such a radical shape guitar, and they stick that tired old headstock on it! Totally out of style with the body. What’s more annoying is the fact that the body shape would easily make a good headstock shape that could take the 4-2 configuration. (I even photoshopped it to try it, but cannot post it here!)

Hi Henning, you said most of the new Schaller tuners suck. I've always liked them, but all the ones I have are on older guitars. Can you tell me who DOES make a really good tuner right now?
I'm a huge St. Vincent fan,but I tried this guitar at Sam Ash and it was just too uncomfortable in the shape of the neck and the body also. I think the pick up configuration is interesting and they seem to sound good from the demos I heard,I assume for the more expensive edition.
The rear covers are not recessed because they are trying to keep the body thickness to a minimum. If they recessed the rear access so the covers were flush they would have less clearance for the tremolo block. Or the vibrato block. You get what I mean. Man! Or "Mann!" Looks great too me, innovative different without being silly. Sounds great too me also. Rosewood neck is going to keep the price of these super high though.
Reminds me of Richie Kotzen's Telecaster (color scheme). I'm on the other side of the fence with unfinished necks. They feel cheap to me. Either do the whole guitar tung-oiled,, or gloss.

It's a beauty. I don't know what this woman does, and neither do I care. But she's come up with the first Music Man I've every wanted to own.
She's actually a stellar musician and a great guitar player. Regardless of the genres of music you prefer she demands respect.
Agreed. I'm f-in getting one. Definitely the burst. Annie Clark is badass. I don't listen to her but she's an amazing artist. Wouldn't matter to me who made this. It's awesome.
kind of a weird comment to make. took care to specify their gender too.

This is a gorgeous guitar and a brilliant design. Kudos to Annie Clark for coming up with it and to Ernie Ball for having the.... to build it.
Is there a quirkier guitar being mass produced? Hell yeah, Ernie Ball to a risk on that beauty.
The lady name is Annie Clarke

Just a girl from Oklahoma.
I got a St. Vincent in blue when they first came out. It’s a killer! Five great sounds, very well made & put together. Neck feels lovely. I personally think it looks cool too. :)

Annie Clark is actually quite good...and her uncle is finger style master Tuck Andress.
+ Dan Luna - Really!?! That's very interesting to me from a genetics standpoint, since not everyone can move their fingers like Tuck or Annie, no matter how much they practice.
It has a distinct own character. I like when reviewers get seduced by the playability/playing fun of a guitar.
The St Vincent that comes in stealth black is SUPER sexy! I'd just put some black tele knobs on it and your in business!
That clear pick guard on that first guitar is sick
Also the St. Vincent guitar is sick, I’ve always loved it
It looks like St Vincent's stage costume, tbh. I'm quite sure that shape was done intentionally
The world shall know the fish scale system soon!!

Looks like something Billy Gibbons might use in a funky blues-rock ZZ Top video.
looks like a firebird meets a bow tie, nice
Wow you're a killer player. I didn't expect that in a review.
Great 1st impressions video. I look forward to a review or at least more info on it. Thanks!
The back covers over the body protects back finish of belt buckle and other scratching.
I think that guitar looks stunning, you too Henning btw :p
I think finally three mini hums is the smartest thing since three single coils, and more versatile. Help me if I ever get my hands on one of these
I think this guitar looks bitchin' awesome, and I really like how all the details and angles work together.

I've had this model with the chrome hardware for 3 years. I love it!
Oh here it is ! Thanks for the great Review.
Fantastic instrument. Love it.
I ACTUALLY LIKE IT Haha, it is weird looking, but that's why it's awesome
Yeah, it has a thing, doesn't it? Don't know, but ever since I first seen it I've been kinda curious about it. It's different, It's interesting.
I love the St. Vincent's shape.
Jesus that thing is so gorgeous (except for the plasticky). And the reversal shot of your setup was cool to see.
I REALLY love the shape, but largely prefer the blue one which is simply amazing.
I think I like this shape. Not sure, until I open with a jazzy jump Blues working in the Flintstone theme song motif and watch the crowd reaction. Pickguard color needs to be modified though

My only problem is figuring out which color. I'm leaning toward this one.

Matteo Calvagno yep, the thinner body demanded it.
Hi Henning... I just got a Sterling St Vincent and It's due to You and Annie Clarke

This guitar was explicitly designed to be ergonomical for women, with, and I quote Annie here, "room for a boob or two". I'd say yes, better ask Kiana if there's a difference wearing it strapped high on up.
It was a joke.
With a black 3 ply pick guard and black knobs that would be gorgeous. And recess the covers.

I....kinda dig it,

I luvs this guitar. I just hate music mans head stock on this. Wish they changed it for this model
I think the shape is cool. Same with the Omar R.L. (Just watched that video). I guess I'm not put off by more modern shapes? They both have different sounds, but I like the tones too. This one feels like something that will sit a bit more behind bass and drums in a mix, but without losing string separation.
Mine is actually quite bright. Really the only (minor) complaint I have about it. It's a great guitar.
Hi Henning, you said most of the new Schaller tuners suck. I've always liked them, but all the ones I have are on older guitars. Can you tell me who DOES make a really good tuner right now?

The rear covers are not recessed because they are trying to keep the body thickness to a minimum. If they recessed the rear access so the covers were flush they would have less clearance for the tremolo block. Or the vibrato block. You get what I mean. So basically that, or the hardtail for a sleeker look.
Sorry the plastic is cheap. I wonder if some people customize their parts. Overall the guitar packs a lot of pro quality for two grand, and the company did not skimp anywhere it counts. I thinking of dumping my Les Paul for one just like this or hardtail.
At 16:52 the vibrato springs look really close to the back of the plate! But you can tell me.
You could also jus ditch the spring cavity plate if it was in the way.
I'm curious what the neck feels like, if it is substantial and also wide enough for my liking.
Henning, what are your opinions on Ratio tuners?
+ScottofOakland love them
I think if the pick guard was smaller (maybe an offset pentagon: the same as it is at the bottom and back but from the top back corner coming down in a straight edge parallel to the bottom and ending at the 20th fret area) it would look a lot nicer as it would leave a triangle of wood at the front that would really highlight its oddity.
