"I'm glad to see someone trying something different." AMEN! We've got enough strat and lp styled guitars out there. I applaud this company for thinking outside the box.
Very cool review... I totally support the adventurous attitude!!!... position 4 (neck + center... I suppose) is very sweet!... thanx Phil... cheers and keep on rocking!!!
I don’t know why this is coming up in my feed 3 years later but I’m glad it is. I’m always happy to see a guitar that isn’t shaped like a Les Paul, Tele, a Strat or a pointy Strat. I mean, people are still talking about how strange the Jazzmaster is shaped and it’s a 60+ year old design and not really that strange.
Very nice sounding guitar. It reminds me of those old Silvertone and 60s Japanese space age guitars as well. The three humbucker idea is really cool as well.
annie used to use an old harmony bobkat religiously, so i think she purposefully designed it to something she was so comfortable with like those old japanese 60s guitars
it's a missed opportunity. EBMM cheaped out by putting one of the existing necks from their parts bin rather specifically stylizing one. it looks out of place.
i'm ok with the headstock but it could have been done. Maybe they wanted it to look at least a little traditionnal but a gibson V style headstock would've been cool in my opinion.
I love how in the 60's they were like "This is the guitar of the future" with things like the explorer, the flying v and the offset fenders like the jazzmaster and the jaguar. At the moment they weren't that espectacular but as years went on, people started to love them, and I belive that models like the st vincent have that vibe to it and it's amazing.
I'm not the biggest fan of Annie's music, but her playing and her taste in guitars is excellent. That thing looks perfect for fuzzed-out psychedelic music, and you're right, I get some serious Danelectro vibes from it.
I really love everything about this guitar. I don't know why, but for some reason the knobs stick out as something that just adds to overall vibe. Great video!
It's comfortable...sounds awesome... wammy stays in tune.. .. and finally an alternative shape... 500$... good quality... if you dig the shape and are tired of the 60 year old strat silhouette . why not?
Dear Phillip have had the same perspection on this guitar: a truly original electric guitar we didn't see in the market since many years now. A gitar that really deserve an attention for the public due to the real different sounds it offers
I got to play one of the EBMM versions at a St Vincent meet and greet. There were a few things that caught my attention, in that less than ideal setting. The body feels even smaller than it looks, and the neck is really comfortable to play. I almost bought one when it was first introduced, but other guitars caught my attention and ate whatever budget I thought I had for it. I dig the Stealth model, and there was a translucent blue Ball Family Reserve model that I liked . But other than that, I haven't really liked any of the colors offered. The Sterling price point is very tempting, regardless of the color.
Actually, surprisingly easy to access them. There are better guitars out there with upper fret access, but this guitar still suited my playing style well!
I love this guitar and have been wanting one since they were first announced. The sterling model you demoed is actually the guitar I’m getting for Guitar Day this year. A lot of people pass it by simply because it is a female signature model, and I’ve heard salesmen at Guitar Center call the contouring a “boob cut” for women, which I found infuriating. It’s a badass guitar, period. Versatile, sleek, comfortable. I love it and I’m so glad you made this video.
Hey, Phillip, are you sure about those pickup positions? The Ernie Ball version uses the following configuration: Position 1 is bridge only Position 2 is middle only Position 3 is neck only Position 4 is all 3 pickups Position 5 is bridge and neck pickup only. I assumed the sterling would follow the same pattern, but perhaps I’m wrong.
Phil, unless you rewired it, this guitar doesn't have the strat style switching. Position 1 is bridge pickup, 2 is middle, 3 is neck, 4 is all three, and 5 is bridge + neck. I've been looking forward to this video, and I'm glad it came out so quickly. Thanks!
I've had my st. Vincent for 6 mos. Now and I haven't got a single negative thing to say about it!!!..it showed up in the mail fully set up and the intonation was and still is perfectly set 6 mos. Later and it's the most comfortable guitar I've ever played in my 30+ years of playin" !!..the only problem with it is that it's an amazingly crafted guitar so much infact that I've neglected my les paul, my strat, tele as well as many others I am a blues guitarist and this guitar w/ 3 mini humbuckers is perfect for playin blues and practically all other genres. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that annie clark designed it considering she just uses synth and an unorthodox style of guitar playing ...more like spiratic noodling. I don't care at all for st. Vincent's style but Annie sure knows how to design the perfect guitar w/ the most unbelievable tonal abilities!!! The economy model by sterling is just as amazingly flawless !!! If anyone is thinking of buying one stop thinking and vet one Now !!! I've never encountered such perfectly crafted guitars as i have in the music man & sterling brands QC must inspect em" with microscopes I believe GIBSON and FENDER NEED TO TAKE SOME NOTES AND FOLLOW SUIT because lately their qc has been slacking
I think the design looks really fun to play because of the ergonomics, I love explorers because you get a built in "armrest" and this looks like it would feel similarly comfortable because of the cuts the put into it.
First off, Cool Intro! Second, and most important, I think the St. Vincent is pretty sweet looking/sounding too, but the look on your face while explaining about it, and the 'non standard' ways you play it is a testament to it's coolness...like a kid in a candy store!
Sterling is hitting some home runs lately. I love this guitar. It reminds me of Bo Diddley and Billy Gibbons. Superhero has not really been as big a hit as I think a lot of people fake with their guitars, but Sterling seems to have just come out of nowhere lately. I really dig their stripped down version of the majesty, it is killer and unique and fresh. and I played a sterling stingray in Tuscon a few months ago and was impressed
It’s guitars like this that I absolutely love, not guitars that look completely unwieldy(although explorer-esque guitars are fine), but guitars that have a really interesting shape.
Thanks for the review! One thing that may be worth correcting in the video is the pickup wiring reference. I think the Sterling reflects the MM St. Vincent counterpart and it is a bit different than a regular five-way switch. I think you were actually starting with N&B first; your N was the middle position of the switch, and so on. If I am not mistaken, positions 1-3 (starting from the bridge) would be your B, M, and N respectively, then position 4 would be all three run simultaneously, and position 5 would be the already mentioned N&B. Thank you!
I think the shape looks great for sit down playing, it has a polygonal shape, flat buttstock bottom if you want the neck to go higher and it just looks really lap friendly in any position for the explorer/songwriting studio practitionist player, and I know it bites with leads and distortion clarity
Hey Phil thank you so much for the double plug! I'm really glad you grabbed one, can't wait for my new guitar day. I got a limited edition American special strat coming off backorder anyway now! Thanks for the awesome channel dude!
Finally my eyes are seeing this guitar as a pure work of art. At first I was shocked and found it almost ugly. But after a few days of youtube algo repetitions i started to review my stupid jugement. Now I'm nearly in love, and certainly bound to buy one, after having heard it at full volume on my stereo... ( I alredy use a Sterling AL-40, a real masterpiece of futuristic design...)
Phil, I am so glad you got that and reviewed it. I have played it at the music store and love the sound. I am waiting for it to get into the used market to get one because as a student in University, money is tight. Thanks again.
I was under the impression that the switching isn’t just strat configuration tho. Can you confirm? Maybe the sterling isn’t the same as the music man that way?
The 3 mini-humbuckers reminds me of an Epi Firebird VII that I had years ago in which all 3 pick-ups were upgraded to Di-Marzios. It was the best sounding guitar I ever had. Anyhow, thanks for reviewing the St. Vincent guitar. I love Annie Clark.
There is only one truly significant thing missing from the cheap model (and of course it’s what I really love about the guitar), and that’s the custom switching. The big boy version has a 5-way switch as follows: Positions 1-3 are each pickup by itself, position 4 is all three at once (in parallel), and position 5 is neck and bridge (also probably parallel, since they’re humbuckers). That being said, this is a sweet guitar for $600 (or $500).
Very cool review Phil. I want one. Oh and thanks for putting my pic up on the channel. Looking forward to getting new shirt and will send a new picture. Keep rockin' and Know Your Gear.
The shape is cool, love mini humbuckers, switching (noted in the comments) is interesting (I'd probably add a switch if I dared to alter it), color is cool, headstock would not be my choice and I'm not a fan of the pedals. Overall an appealing guitar.
A very nice review. I wawtched many of them for the St Vincent Guitar. You explained really well and pointed out the things that i liked as well in this guitar
You have very good taste on guitars, and i am a Bass player owned a Stingray Bass since 79 Hooked every since and between the STEINBERGER (Brooklyn made) there is not a tone that i can't get.....I love your videos cause you know what your talking about Phillip...Less is more...Bro.
I really like all your vids. I bought it. Yup STV60 black Sterling St Vincent. Great guitar. Most comfortable of any. 3 mini humbuckers so versatile No down side..really gives new one tone options from typical offering s Thanks very much you helped a lot.
Great review back then and still today. Now I have had my St Vincent black Stv60 for a year..The mini humbuckers are incredible getting super delicate to tough SG style sounds. Thank you again for your reviews love this guitar. Yes I have vintage big names too and it fits in.
It looks like these were discontinued and the prices for used ones on Reverb and eBay are topping $1k, some way over. Looks like this inexpensive model option is now something of a collectors item. This guitar was the first guitar I bought after my multiple sclerosis diagnosis when I thought I'd never be able to play guitar again (as at that time it affected my hands pretty terribly); something about this guitar - specifically the Sterling version - worked for me and my hands as I fought to get back to being able to play (it was literally physical therapy; I could no longer even hold a pick for more than a minute), so for that I have a real soft spot for this guitar and specific model. Not sure why this popped up in my feed as it is a years old review but I'm glad it did! Great review!
I was tempted by the Sterling, but I LOVE rosewood necks. The Music Man version is one of the best guitars out of the box I've ever played. 2nd only to my EJ Strat in comparison. Except zero hum and the bridge actually stays in tune! The DiMarzio mini buckers are just a bit richer with more sparkle. But the pickups in the Sterling sound pretty good to me as well. If I could only afford the Sterling, I'd be very happy with it. It's a cool guitar!
I played that guitar a while back it's a very interesting guitar very unique and like you said it's like something from the 50's. And to give credit to Anne it's definitely not another Strat copy.
Great review, but the switching on this is actually different than something like a strat. (Starting at the rightmost position) Position 1 is the bridge pickup, position 2 is middle, position 3 is neck, position 4 is all 3 pickups in parallel, and position 5 is the neck and bridge together. I have the exact model myself and it took me a bit to figure out.
Phil ,I like it I played the $1,800 one liked it so much I took a picture with it like it was my guitar. That guitar was so comfortable it's not just a woman's ax.
great song that you made up with the looper! i want the expensive version but I am not rich.I will have to be happy with my Silver Sky, my first and probably only up market world class instrument.Your clean demo shows how good the cheaper versions resonance and pickups are compared to the expensive version. Greg Koch does an awesome demo of the expensive St Vincent guitar showing how good it is....rock on Phil!
I've always wanted one of these guitars ever since I first saw it. Since then I have listened to St. Vincent and I absolutely love them. For sub $700 I might have to save up and get myself one of these amazing guitars.
Thorough, helpful video as always! Question about the guitar, though: As far as the pickups go, if one were to replace them, which "set" would they use? Bridge + Neck + Neck?
Love that guitar! Glad there is a more affordable model. I will own it someday. Looks like a guitar from " The Jetsons". Different yet still cool vintage type shape. Love mini humbuckers too. We can all use a guitar that is a bit different and needs to be played with something besides the same old tired riffs we all know (and still love).
"I'm glad to see someone trying something different." AMEN! We've got enough strat and lp styled guitars out there. I applaud this company for thinking outside the box.
Chris House i have a Parker Fly. I love it for the same reason.
Very cool review... I totally support the adventurous attitude!!!... position 4 (neck + center... I suppose) is very sweet!... thanx Phil... cheers and keep on rocking!!!
All about Annie Clarke doing something different :)
Hear, hear!
The Little Sister by B&G is also fresh for me. They look like they gon be a classic
Just came up today. Kick ass
Mine too today😂
The positions actually go
1: Bridge
2: Middle
3: Neck
4: All three
5: Bridge + Neck
Charles Pelletier what a weird way to wire this thing...
not at all: you get tele ish sound with the bridge + neck
its like you have 3 guitars in one
I would put on a toggle to turn on neck or bridge then wire it like a strat and boom all 7 positions.
Yeap!
Annie Clark's specifications. She requested the special wiring.
Just saw Annie play in Seattle last night on half a dozen of those guitars. Twice as inspiring now.
That middle position sounds fantastic
Bo-Diddly's guitar had a baby with a strat, and it came out lookin so fine
The guitar looks really cool, except for the headstock, which should be more angular to match the body's shape better.
it's a missed opportunity. EBMM cheaped out by putting one of the existing necks from their parts bin rather specifically stylizing one. it looks out of place.
80386 I'd replace it with a fender neck.
i'm ok with the headstock but it could have been done.
Maybe they wanted it to look at least a little traditionnal
but a gibson V style headstock would've been cool in my opinion.
Headstock looks ok.. The rosewood headstock looks fantastic on the EB though.
no way man. lets you know it's a music man. You know... The guitar company that often kicks fender in the balls lol.
Looks like a guitar off the Jetson from when I was a kid. I like!
Jason Bone its the shape of his sisters dress, I think
Jason Bone now that you mention it that guitar would look really awesome if it was Elroy green with a white pickguard!
It instantly made me think of the Jetsons too!
I played that guitar today for one hour at guitar center.Very comfortable.Unique sound.
I really enjoyed it.
I love those guitars. Annie rules.
St vincent totally crushed it, what a great signature model, I'd love to play one of these
I really love everything about this guitar. I don't know why, but for some reason the knobs stick out as something that just adds to overall vibe. Great video!
New guitar leading to new sounds. I love it.
It's comfortable...sounds awesome... wammy stays in tune.. .. and finally an alternative shape... 500$... good quality... if you dig the shape and are tired of the 60 year old strat silhouette . why not?

I like that truss rod adjustment nut placement. Just like Wolfgangs. Awesome color and sounds great. Pretty cool.
I've got the high-end version of this guitar and I absolutely love it! Great review as always.
How is the upper fret access? Looks like the body gets in the way a bit.
Actually, surprisingly easy to access them. There are better guitars out there with upper fret access, but this guitar still suited my playing style well!
Is it a bit neck heavy? Does it dive a little? Thanks
@@sandrosadhukhan No neck dive.
I love this guitar and have been wanting one since they were first announced. The sterling model you demoed is actually the guitar I’m getting for Guitar Day this year. welllll Annie goofed up and made a joke about the guitar accomadating boobs and now that's all you hear...
Hey, Phillip, are you sure about those pickup positions? The Ernie Ball version uses the following configuration:
Position 1 is bridge only
Position 2 is middle only
Position 3 is neck only
Position 4 is all 3 pickups
Position 5 is bridge and neck pickup only.
I assumed the sterling would follow the same pattern, but perhaps I’m wrong.
Yeah pretty sure he's completely wrong on the positions - isn't it something like neck + bridge, all 3, neck, middle, bridge?
You're right here mate ;)
I own the Sterling. Can confirm it had the same switching configuration as the Musicman.
Yes, I own the STV60 and you are correct about the switching. It’s a big part of what makings this guitar special.
You can hear it clearly on the demo. Compare position 5 at 4:18 (Bridge/Neck) with Position 3 at 4:42 (Neck only).
Thanks!
Bridge pickup sounds so sweet. almost like a bright-ish neck pickup. awesome!
I love the matte black version of this, also the all-white!
kitano0 I’m a fan of the eccentric orange model Mary Spender recently picked up.
Yeah, she looks great playing it...well, she's just great, period....
I've had my st. Vincent for 6 mos. Now and I haven't got a single negative thing to say about it!!!..it showed up in the mail fully set up and the intonation was and still is perfectly set 6 mos. You can say I'm crazy, but what I love the most about this guitar are the control knobs. That's a killer shape for knobs.
I think the design looks really fun to play because of the ergonomics, I love explorers because you get a built in "armrest" and this looks like it would feel similarly comfortable because of the cuts the put into it.
The Sterling James Valentine signature is extremely nice also, and actually even closer than this to the big brother guitar.
Awesome. Your demo jam was totally complimentary to the quirky vibe of the guitar and the spirit of Annie's playing!
I messed around with one of these unplugged in Guitar Center. I thought the weight and balance were great. The neck felt great too.
Cool as hell guitar, loved the looping too.
I think the shape looks like a corset or vintage swimsuit and I love it.
It’s guitars like this that I absolutely love, not guitars that look completely unwieldy(although explorer-esque guitars are fine), but guitars that have a really interesting shape.
A nice add to the collection and very 60-ish look and vibe. I like it and well done!
Thank you!
The guitar is designed so well! Those who bash it have no idea what they are talking about!! it’s a gig guitar for sure! Comfort and light weight!
People think this shape is outrageous but the Albert Lee model Annie Clark was using before this looked equally outrageous to me
If they made a Sterling AL model, I would be all over it...
They share the same neck profile too.
U2 >>>>
i love my Albert Lee! great guitar, feels and sounds awesome
the one she used before looked better
she should have made the signature based off that one
Mini hums way cool. Thanks for doing many different sound modes. Looks like fine quality.
I think the shape looks great for sit down playing, it has a polygonal shape, flat buttstock bottom if you want the neck to go higher and it just looks really lap friendly in any position for the explorer/songwriting studio practitionist player, and I know it bites with leads and distortion clarity
I love this guitar, i must have one, without your review i would not have given it a second look, thank you.
Love that intro!
PixxyLixxx are you still dead?
Yes.
Pixxy from Boston?
PixxyLixxx :(
Adam Cogan wait what?!
I have been wanting this guitar. So glad there's a low cost version to get. I would drop in a new harness to split the mini humbuckers.
this is one of the few youtube demos where my reaction is 'i really want this'. well done!
At the end Phil is hugging his new guitar! I think he likes it! The problem with Phil's videos is they both save me money, and tempt me to spend it!
I played one today and loved everything about it
Hey Phil thank you so much for the double plug! I'm really glad you grabbed one, can't wait for my new guitar day. I got a limited edition American special strat coming off backorder anyway now! Thanks for the awesome channel dude!
The St Vincent has a very unique design for something a little different. I like the blue color.
Ive been lusting over the white Sterling Cutlass . So many features for the money. Fender take note
I actually like the tones in this video more than any of the demos of the expensive version I've watched
Does it for me. And thanks again for being the only reviewer who doesn't play like Stevie Vai. 😀
I’m super stoked on its different design. I’m so glad you bought it in QA# 48. Thanks for the review Phil!
I was under the impression that the switching isn’t just strat configuration tho. Can you confirm? Maybe the sterling isn’t the same as the music man that way?
Something about that middle pickup, sounds really awesome!
If they would release a Sterling model in the flashy Orange color (like the limited edition that Marry Spender bought), I would definitely buy it!
Love the intro, Phil. Really nice editing on this video! Getting better and better!
That is a seriously cool looking guitar. Love that people are still out there doing new things!
The Hofner Hi 459 guitar has somewhere near that tone because of the pickups, but the playability is that of a Gibson .
Beautiful guitar !
What's the neck profile like on the sterling version?
A very nice review. I wawtched many of them for the St Vincent Guitar. You explained really well and pointed out the things that i liked as well in this guitar
Nice job Phil. I like the guitar too, and I also think it’s a refreshing new look and sound.
3 mini humbuckers so versatile
No down side..really gives new one tone options from typical offering s
Thanks very much you helped a lot.
Great review back then and still today. Now I have had my St Vincent black Stv60 for a year..The mini humbuckers are incredible getting super delicate to tough SG style sounds. Thank you again for your reviews love this guitar. Yes I have vintage big names too and it fits in.
If it's good enough for Philip, it's good enough for me. I'd buy one.
Steve Redenbaugh Dick
OMG that sounds just like every guitar I've ever heard!
She's a beaut, Clark! I love that color, too. I want to find one around here and play it now.
Love that middle pickup.
The stealth black one looks amazing!

I have the exact model myself and it took me a bit to figure out.
Thanks for being a great mentor. Your videos are great and you know your gear
Nice Phil. I would add that Annie took the female anatomy into consideration in the body design. Something that you don't need to worry about!
Phil ,I like it I played the $1,800 one liked it so much I took a picture with it like it was my guitar. That guitar was so comfortable it's not just a woman's ax.
I really like this, its small, its different, and thats all it really takes to get me hooked, but it sounds great as well, which is always a plus
Great video Philip! Love seeing the excitement from you from a NGD!
You really need to try one of these to see how nice they are especially the quack positions none of the problems associated with strats
That’s a very cool looking and sounding guitar. Glad to see someone playing something other than a Gibson or Fender. Thanks !
I love the color and shape
I don't hold my wife with that kind of joy!
I love it man, what a really cool 60s vibe.

That sounds great! I'm still not sold on the body shape, but now that I've seen someone play it I can see how comfortable it could be.
That is the Pontiac Aztek of guitars.
I audibly chuckled! Best comment right there ^ (But I love how it looks, maybe the color helps)
😂😂😂😂
....but I actually like the Pontiac Aztek...though I think the guitar is ugly...lol.
(That was a hilarious comment though!!)
But where is the cooler, and tent?!
So awesome and misunderstood
great song that you made up with the looper! i want the expensive version but I am not rich.I will have to be happy with my Silver Sky, my first and probably only up market world class instrument.Your clean demo shows how good the cheaper versions resonance and pickups are compared to the expensive version.
Cool!! Thanks for this run-through.
Very cool looking...kinda like something you’d see Billy Gibbons play LOL. Nice sounds too!
You definitely come off as a very likable guy I love your videos and keep on rockin
