Finding Additional Damage on my Project 240sx..

- This project 240sx has progressed an insane amount in the past year. During the first test drive last fall the RB25 turbo exploded. Today begin looking into the carnage and fabricating a new (to me) RSR exhaust from Japan!
I spent the last 7 years building this 1990 Nissan 240sx from the ground up by myself. I swapped out the KA24e for a KA24de. Then once more for a RB25det out of a R34 Skyline and couldn't be happier. I have also converted the 240 to right hand drive, (which ended up saving my life!) After installing a few drift parts; such as a hydro E - Brake, and dual rear calipers, welded diff, solid suspension bushings and more, the car handled amazing. Surprisingly this S13 was able to drift and stay sideways perfectly despite the damage that was done to it.

I know stock 2j turbos have ceramic wheels that like to come apart when you start to push them. Maybe the RB's are the same?
One wheel shatters and the shaft gets enough play that the other side makes contact with the housing, breaking both.
its beautiful seeing someone else progress, especially if their work is due to trial and error with so much effort

ceramic ballbearing turbines. Very common for them to grenade straight from the factory if you overboost or overheat severely. I would get a brand new wastegate.

The crash probably caused the turbo to take damage as the fender hit it. Could have caused cracks or something maybe a bend a propeller or shaft causing the turbo to self clearance? But I bet it was because of the crash
that's what i tought, but i didn't know how to explain it, btw, for me it's definetily from the crash

Also, If you ever ran the engine without the pressure side from the turbo to the throttlebody, the engine might turn on, the turbo will spin but not generate boost, the engine won't detect boost but it still works and by not making any boost and by not having the throttlebody pressure side/couplers connected, the throttlebody won't obstruct the air entrance and it could easily overspin the turbo without you noticing, causing it to fail especially because it had alot of miles into it, and also by having a ceramic impeller which is known to blow up.
I'm sorry if I made a mess trying to explain, english is not my native language but I've seen that before and I thought it was nice to share that, hope it shines a light for this mistery turbo history lol
Also, I worked at a custom exaust shop for a couple months, you did exactly what we done there for the most part and your welds are looking better each day, great work as always!!! Keep it up bro!!!

A way to get a straight cut on exhaust pipe with the cut off wheel is wrap a piece of tape around it and follow that 🤙🏻

If that's the same as the R32 GTR turbos, they have ceramic wheels and fins that are known to shatter/explode around 15 psi! My R32's turbos did the same thing under it's previous owner, the boost controller / limiter was NOT working, so it exceeded boost and blew up. Rebuilding to steel wheels allows them to be run a little higher (R33 GTR turbos fixed this). Thanks for the awesome video as always.

Coming from nz where we have played with rbs alot longer I know that 25det neo turbos have ceramic turbine wheels and they allways explode if you give them any more than the factory 10psi. I’d say what’s happened in your case is it was running under 10 when you had all the exhaust leaks and spiked after you fixed them.

After an impact like the one you took I’d say that’s the cause of the turbo failing. Good stuff!

I reckon that the compressor wheel failed first, since the ceramic ones do that. So once that broke, the exhaust turbine was allowed to free spin far faster than it should, while also now grinding down on the housing, then the excessive speed caused it to overheat the shaft, probably expand and seize and then the turbine wheel snapped off.

Bro I would Check the turbo oil feed line to make sure it’s flowing. I’ve seen a brand new turbo get wrecked from a clogged oil feed line! Props on the builds. Shit is crazy!

For exhaust work, you can use a miter saw and use a metal cutting blade for the angles that you want. I’ve also been using an angle grinder for years.

I had a N14 R56 Mini JCW suck in a small 2.5" rubber intake coupler, it destroyed the intake turbine, filled the intercooler with junk and a piece of rubber managed to get stuck on the throttle blade.
So my guess is that there was a loose object that got sucked into either the intake or exhaust turbine, the failure at the speeds turbo's spin would likely cause the other wheel to be damaged too.
The intercooler would catch a lot of the debris, as seen in your video, but some material can also get stuck in the throttle body blade too, and of course the intake/exhaust values could also get damaged. 😃
