  • In this video I pass the 60sec mark for static balancing on my 2006 BMW R1200GS Adventure. It took me 40min over two days to get here. It is insane how the progress in not linear, but step-wise. Keep practicing! It will come!

Thank you, I agree.. I need a lot of practice as it is still difficult every time I start :)

@@GreaseAndGravelI looked this up because I'm new to ADV riding, but I'm a long time Mountain Bike (MTB) rider.
In the last year, I've gotten WAY better at static balance (we call them track stands) on a MTB, a dirt jumper (DJ) and BMX (way harder because it's so small and twitchy), and it's been game changing for riding MTB on the trails, even with 10 years of riding.
I just went out for the first time yesterday on my new (to me) KTM 690 Enduro and immediately wished I knew how to static balance better. I got stuck in big railroad track gravel, and I had to turn the bike around. I got off on the brake side, and couldn't get back on to put the bike in 1st gear and get out of there 😂
I suspected static balance might be possible, at least for short stints, so I tried. I eventually static balanced for about 2 seconds, long enough to get my leg over and hop on the other side. There wasn't easily room to walk around the bike while holding it up, so the static balance was totally useful. I think you're dead on, and I agree about the neighbors!
Until I watched your video, I wasn't sure if you could even do this on a bigger bike! Bravo for making this video, you're literally the only one I've seen make this content! Thanks for letting me know it's possible. I'll be practicing this in the mornings after I warm up on the BMX doing trials training 😊

Thanks for the nice comment@@crunchtools ! I believe any skill, no matter how weird it may seem, on your big bike is worth it and will help with some other real-world riding problem you might encounter (like the one you mentioned).
I suspect you'll find that you struggle to balance for 2-3 seconds and if you keep going, it will suddenly 'click' and you'll be able to track stand like you do on your MTB. I'd say, keep going for 15 minutes at a time then take a day off.
It is not a linear progression. I think it is your brain making the connections to the relevant muscles.
Let me know how it goes! I'm betting you'll get there sooner than you think.

@@GreaseAndGravel I wanted to check back in with you, and let you know that it was great advice. I started doing 15 minute sessions and had a day or two break in between.
Today was my forth session and I got to 1 minute 18 seconds!!! Woo hoo!
Last session I got to 18 seconds, which I was happy with, but 1:18 made me really happy!
      Thanks for the advice!!!
