    UPDATE ON THE VIDEO: With the "Enthusiast" license, a VIN slot is only taken up when a ‘Service Function’ is carried out. The user can run as many AutoScans, read/clear as many DTC’s and check real-time values on as many VIN’s as they wish! It’s only Service Functions such as component activation, service reset, calibrations, configurations, coding etc which use a unique VIN slot.

    Are you using 10 pin adapter? (If so, male or female) I am considering buying a used R1200GS 2009 model and thinking about this diagnostics tool.

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn't own a BMW without the tool! Yes, I have the adapter. The 2006 bike port is round (female I think LOL) and the diagnostic tool is rectangular (male).

      Sorry for the very late reply! I bought mine in South Africa (where they come from) here: hexdiagnostics.co.za/product-category/gs-911/ They are now R7245 Totally worth it!

    I just use an ODB reader and app

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, that would do the same thing. We don't get them as readily here in SA though. Or they send you the wrong reader.

    • @FrancoisBarnard0
      @FrancoisBarnard0 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A generic OBD reader will only give you OBD-II mandated info and fault-codes (typically emissions related), so any other BMW-specific info will not be known

    • @SideQuestStijn
      @SideQuestStijn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@FrancoisBarnard0 There are BMW specific ODB apps out there that allow similar functionality, at least for 2013 (> wethead) bikes. Don't know about the aircooled ones. GS-911 is using the same interface.

      I just like trying different bikes and I've always wanted to own one. I do prefer simpler bikes though. The bike I miss most is my Gen1 KLR (and my XT500).

    ( I LOVE your channel ) But I'm curious why people buy these types of bikes, especially you, because you love older things like your samurai, etc. To me, anything BMW makes is pretty subpar in every category. And then on top of that, it's very expensive, way too heavy, super complex like it's easier to work on an F-15 fighter jet by far. I have spent 38 years traveling the world, I have seen hundreds of guys on these things and every single one of them was a slave to their dead weight BMW. No one can fix them, they are way too silly and useless to deal with any weather or mud. I wish you would make a video and explain what it is you and your friend like about these. I can understand if you live in Germany and use it on the highway every day, and you just want to look like your too fancy to drive a honda haha, but I'll never understand the off-road or adventure aspect, not even the practical aspect. Because if I live in Germany, I'll take a Transalp any day over any EU-made bike. And my Transalp will still be running strong in 50 years, and worth more than I paid new, which is about 70% less than a mid-range BMW. Also have you seen all the monthly fees BMW charges ? the new bikes wont even let you change setting without paying ..... I will cut my own legs of and craw on adventures before I ever buy a computer bike with subscription fees.

      Hi, thank you for the comment! Sorry I missed it! That's a great idea for a video. I've always wanted a GSA (since watching Long Way Round... lol I know!).. I bought a 2006 exactly because they don't have as many electronics as the new GSs. They are also very easy to work on. But heavy! I still prefer carbs out in the sticks. If I ever travel through Africa again, I'd probably take a small 200-250cc single again.
