Canon 6D Mark ii VS 5D Mark iii - What spec ACTUALLY matters?

  • A review of the Canon EOS 6D mark ii and a comparison with the older 5D mark iii. A lot of people are asking which one to get as they are around the same price point currently. I run through the pros and cons and take a look at what ACTUALLY matters when it comes to differences in the spec.

      a GOOD job is to look at PICTURES and compare pictures. The most important thing about photography is pictures, not specs.

    I personally made a big step in camera technic - One and a half year ago I made a switch from Canon's 550D to 6D Mk II. This was a massive step!! Wow - I love this great piece of engineering! Lovely pictures, no problems at all from what others complaining on TH-cam and this lovely flippable touch screen on a full frame camera! Forget about Sony ;) And btw. Jamie - Thank you for your nice review and of course your other interesting videos. Love it, too!

    Man, you just sold me 6D2. Thanks a lot for this review. I've been thru many and still couldn't decide what to choose. I like how you pinpointed what's important and had a laugh on what's not making a lot of a difference. Thank you!

    Oh, Ilove the side-by-side comparison of the focus points. The endless whining about the 6D's concentrated focus area on TH-cam really put me off getting it, but I don't hear similar complaints about this with the 5D.

    Really good review mate, it's nice to see reviews about it coming out from guys who actually use them for a living. I use the 6D mk II for landscape primarily and it's been fantastic. Managed to see through all the guff reviews from 'reviewers' who obsess over specs/lab test and never actually use the camera, they probably sit taking photos of their keyboards and regurgitating opinions all day. Totally understand about the dual card slot, if my work involved once in a lifetime shots I'd have probably taken the hit and went for the 5D Mk IV when upgrading but for now I'd rather spend that money on glass. Keep up the videos, good stuff!

    • @1arjen8
      @1arjen8 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read you use it for landscape photography. I consider buying a 6D mark Ii just for landscape. Do you have any views on some criticisms I read here and there about the 6D mark Ii having a "disappointing dynamic range"? Does that affect your work? Does the camera indeed overexpose clear skies and underexpose shaded areas?

    I have a canon 5d Mark ii and absolutely love the vibe it brings to the photos. However I wanted to upgrade to a newer version because the screen on the mark ii isn’t the best for playback. The 6d was looking like the best choice with the pop out screen and touch screen capability. But the camera got such a bashing on every review I watched that I ended up choosing the Sony A7iii. I have tried really hard to love the A7iii but haven’t been able to enjoy it. It felt crappy in my hands so I got the battery grip....still doesn’t feel right. I’ve also been frustrated with the options of lenses for Sony. So after spending 5k on various lenses trying to get the look of a canon I’ve given up. The Sony just looks too clinical. I stopped in to a shop in the way hone and ordered a 6d ii for $700 under retail on special. Can’t wait to get it and get back into enjoying taking photos. Thanks for your review.

    Good honest review. I've been shooting with the 6D2 for 4 months or so now and absolutely love it. I paired it with my 80D that I've had for about 2 years and shoot with both these cameras all the time.
    I was cautious and skeptical with all the bashing and negative reviews on the 6D2 but went ahead and bought it anyways....somewhat expecting that every image I took with it to be nothing but a grainy blurrrrr with absolutely no dynamic range at all!!!! LOL
    I have no regrets and I am getting some pretty amazing images with this camera.

    Great to see you sticking with Canon when so many are changing. I bought the 6D MKii this morning, the one thing NO ONE has mentioned is that it is no longer made from magnesium!!! it is plastic like the cheap rebel cameras! My heart sank when I first picked it up, light is great but it doesn't have the heavy expensive feel of the 5D series. Card slot as well, the 7D MKii got dual slots and it is only a APS-C sensor. I will give it a few weeks and see how I get on, but I think it will end up as a back-up body or a camera for my wife, she loves the light weight.

    The 6DII to me is basically a Full Frame 80D. Since the 80D was cheaper at the time - bought during holiday sales for $800 - I bought that and love it. If I wanted a full frame I think the 6DII is a good choice; if one doesn't care about dual cards and the joystick missing, which I don't.

    I had been on the fence for the 6D mkII for months now, but earlier today decided to order it. I sold my 6D two months ago and ventured into a Sony A6000 that I can't stand (except for the lightness, going to sell to it soon). Didn't want to spend all the money for a 5d mkIV since it doesn't have an articulating screen. Super excited to get it. I like your review, too, I think the specs people are just off the charts. Good photos with good lenses are the key. I have an 80D which compared to the original 6D I love, especially the focus and video. Super psyched for it to arrive.

      Heluizio Almeida Both times cards have failed on me, it wasn’t apparent until trying to import the images. One shorted out during an import and one just started slowing down and eventually became unreadable. There are companies that do data retrieval, but it’s expensive and there’s no guarantee that anything can be saved.

    I recently made a side to side comparison with both the 5D mark III and my 6D mark II. I Installed James Miller's Clog profile on both cameras and shot a comparison with the same lens and same lighting conditions. The IPB codec in the 6D Mark II is superior to the All-I in the 5D mark III. There were a lot more artifacts with the 5D mark III and I suppose it is not all about the compression. The processor has a lot to do with it. An IPB codec with good processing yields to better results than an All-I with an older processor. That's why my C100 mark II has such a gorgeous image despite the internal lower bitrate. Both the 6D mark II and my C100 Mark II cut beautifully. I might upload that comparison soon.

    One thing I love about the 6D2 is the focus and shoot touch screen. Using a stylus to choose my point of focus, it is great to shoot series of images for focus stacked composites. The lack of a second card slot would be a deal breaker for me if I were shooting professionally. I had the SD card slot crap out after less than a year of shooting. I have never experienced this in hundreds of thousands of exposures with CF card cameras.

    it was a few months ago that I replaced a 50D and 40D with a 6D original and 70D, and I preferred the switch from the joystick to the d-pad on the wheel. However the most important control changes to me between those models are also shared with the 5D III, and that's the power switch, mode wheel lock, and photo/video/live/rec controls.

    Good Points in that Video for the Not so loved 6DII. Always Good to het to know a well-founded and a Little Bit different view.

    Why don't sandisk make a two-in-one sd card so every camera becomes dual memory... Shouldn't be to hard.

    Backup not a problem. I do it via WiFi to my phone instantly. And my phone to google drive. So don’t really need extra card slot.

    Good review to a point..i agree the differences dont really affect real photography...a lot of reviews spend more time now on the video aspect...blah blah..zzzz keep to the photography..what wasn't mentioned was the 5diii has a digic 5 sensor and the 6d ii a digic 7 sensor and how these affect shots in low light..not just nightime shots that most reviews deal about but..indoor shots without using flash..like weddings events etc. These are the real issues photographers want to know. How noise affects shots etc. image quality and sharpness. What i find is the older cameras..40d 60d etc.. and newer cameras ..ie. 6d 6dii 5dii 5diii see much much better in liw light ( again im not talking about night photography but indoor artificial and natural light shots). Something that isnt addressed enough i feel. When it comes to portraits landscapes sports etc. If you cant take a decent shot with the technology both before and after the shot ie. Photoshop etc. Then give up...try getting it right with one shot on slide film fuji velvia 50 iso and you'll see what i mean.haaa

    Thanks for the review. I've been shooting and filming with an 80D, this seems like a logical step if I want to go full frame? As I film on my own the dual pixel focusing is a god send.

    I’m just getting the 6D Mark II over the 5D because of the built in WiFi. It comes in real handy when you’re on vacation and you want to post things right away.

    Jamie, I would like your opinion about the dynamic range of the 6d mark II, there is a big debate about it on TH-cam, frankly it’s really confusing

    I like what the camera has to offer, I really wish they could have added the 2nd card slot. I know that was a deal breaker for most people.

    single card issue is not really an issue in my opinion. in 6d the processor is a newer faster processor. so a slower card compensates but the camera must be faster on all other operations i think. any comments?

    I'm thinking of getting the 5d Mark III. I'll be able to soon. I want to start my photography business and the crop factor with an APS C body bothers me considering I've put so much money into specific focal length lenses. I considered the original 6D but the 5d3 will last me far longer and be more secure with its multiple card slots and better af. At 1500 US dollars secondhand it'll do for at least a few years if not more.

      Jake Morel 5d mark iii right now is on sale at b&h photo for a ridiculous price it’s 1999.99 USD!!! That’s a crazy deal for a 5d and if you want to save money the 6d is 999.99USD!!! I’d totally encourage you to hop on that deal! Trying to tell as many people as possible for the deal because it’s crazy not sure when it ends or if it’s only for US!

      Lina M I found a 5d Mark III with 16k shutter actuations for only 1550 us dollars. And they have a good bit more of them check out mpb . Com. Dunno if they're illegal or what but they have high key photos of each camera they sell it's phenomenal. The camera looks practically new and feels so solid it's incredible

    • @HILife808state
      @HILife808state 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jake Morel yeah you can go with whatever makes you more comfortable! B& h is a trusted website even bestbuy price matches them! But saving 350 is great too! Just wanted to share the sale with as many people as I can

    • @Jakems28
      @Jakems28 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lina M I don't think b and h does sale prices. Their used cameras are all sold on a rating scale. A camera at their second to lowest rating is 1500 so I think I made the right choice with mpb. At least with them I can see exactly what I'm getting

    • @Jakems28
      @Jakems28 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lina M if you mean new then that's pretty good that drops my savings from 900 down to 500. I still think I did the right choice

    Thanks Jamie! I've gone through tons of compare videos and posts on which to get. I'm hoping from a 6D and juggled between these two. Just can't beat having insurance with dual card slots. Also, I don't do do vids so it's another x for the 6d ii. Maybe for a sub camera. :/

    I don't understand why the 6D Mk ii was so talked about like it's a bad camera, like it's not worth buying... , while the regular 6D is loved by almost everybody. Well at the original price point... yes maybe. But Canon lowered its price 25% less for new just a few months after its release. For FF photos, it's great (I don't video record much at all).

    Just buy a A6500 for the video, it's amazing, small, light blows the 5d and 6d out the water on video. I thought long and hard about it and then jest went for the a6500. Hardly notice it's with me when I have the 5di3and 7d2 it's so small.

    I appreciate the straight up common sense review Jamie. I agree so much of the criticism the 6D mkII has received has been on finer points of specs that to the vast majority of shooters won't really matter. My one reservation so far is what I've been hearing about the 6D mkII's poor dynamic range at lower ISO. I tend to shoot darker compositions quite often and I'm a bit concerned that I'll end up with grain when I should have pin sharpness. I also don't really do video so those strengths are somewhat lost on me.Anyone have thoughts on this dynamic range issue?
