Mark you are an incredible artist... I'm a guitarist and i am interested to start taking violin lessons because of the inspiration you bring to me. I cannot find enough words to thank you. Kind regards.
I have one question on the dot configuration. The correspondence you mention with octave points and so on makes sense given a standard GDAE (or in this case, CGDAE) tuning. Would it not be different for a scordatura? As someone who played Carnatic classical music, I'm accustomed to tuning my instrument tonic-fifth-tonic-fifth (tonic can be anything based on whose voice you're tuning to)... in my case for a 5-string it would work out DGDGD, and sure enough the positions are different as a result -- I'd expect a lot of 3-dot lines in that case, since alternating strings are an octave apart, meaning every key harmonic is at the same position on alternating strings. Indeed, it's part of why in Indian music, we have no corresponding "2nd" position -- what we call "2nd" is 3rd position in the West. Of course, that along with having to do vibratos as wide as a major 3rd in some cases means the concept of fixed positions has little value anyway.
Thanx Mark. A video of that type of vibrato would be great for guitar players dabbling in violin. That's the big deal breaker in learning violin is mastering vibrato after years of guitar. It just doesn't feel natural from guitar. If you can push down or bend for a nice vibrato you would have a lot of guitar players loving that.
Hey mark, Can you push down just behind the frets to do light vibrato so you don't need to do regular vibrato? Just a push down vibrato with your finger tips? I see regular vibrato works well.
Thanks Mark, I have been surfing the web, trying to decide Fret or Fretless on a new Zeta Jazz Fusion. This video helped so very much, seems most violinist think Frets will not work on a violin . I ordered one with Frets. Thanks for your caring help. So sorry about your friend .

Hi Mark, so why do you fret a violin ON the frets and not right behind them, like you do with other fretted instruments? By the way, great video!
