How to Set Up and Use the Gourmia GCM4230 Automatic Espresso Maker
This video will show you how to set up and use the Gourmia Automatic Espresso Maker. Before using the Espresso Maker, be sure to read the user manual in full.
The espresso maker comes with a removable water reservoir, milk reservoir, portafilter, measuring scoop and tamper, double-shot filter and single shot filter. Before first use, clean and dry all the parts thoroughly.
How to Set Up & Prime the Espresso Maker:
Ensure the water reservoir is filled to the max line and placed in the back of the unit before plugging in or turning on the appliance. Turn on the espresso maker.
Insert the milk reservoir into the unit by aligning the groove on top of the reservoir with the notch on the unit and pushing until it locks into place. If you only see two icons on the control panel it is because the milk reservoir has not been correctly inserted into the unit. You will hear a click when the milk reservoir is properly inserted, and all the icons will light up.
Before first use, you need to prime the espresso maker. Place the portafilter with an empty filter into the brew head with the handle facing left. Rotate the handle toward the center to lock the portafilter in place. Place a mug under the froth dispensing tube. Turn the froth strength control knob to the clean position. Tap Clean. Discard the dispensed water.
How To Brew with the Espresso Maker:
Align the gap in the filter with the groove in the portafilter and drop the filter in place. Fill the single or double shot filter with fine espresso grounds. Tamp gently. Secure the portafilter into the brew head.
Place a mug on the drip tray. For larger mugs, remove the drip tray. See the Mug Size Guide at the top of page 10 in the user manual.
For Espresso: tap the espresso icon once for a single shot and twice for a double shot. After you tap a drink icon, the espresso maker will preheat momentarily before it begins dispensing.
For Cappuccino and Latte: Ensure the milk reservoir is filled with milk and properly inserted into the unit. Tap your desired drink’s icon.
For Americano: In order to brew americano, the milk reservoir needs to be properly inserted into the unit. Place a mug under the froth dispensing tube. Turn the froth strength control knob to the Americano position. Tap the Americano icon.
How to Clean the Espresso Maker:
Remove the portafilter from the brew head by rotating it to the left.
Lift the filter retention clip over the filter edge and dump the remaining grinds.
To clean the espresso maker, position the portafilter and milk reservoir into place. Turn the froth strength control knob to the clean position, place a mug on the drip tray, and tap clean. Wash and dry all the parts. We recommend descaling the appliance every 2-3 months. See Descaling on page 18 of the user manual.

Please make one more video showing how to make each type of coffee drinks. Mine doesn't look like the one in the end of this video and the cup is half empty
The drink at the end of the video is a double shot cappuccino. The appearance may change when the drink settles.
the froth selector knob is so unintuitive. so all the way to the right with the plus sign is for the least amount of froth??
Why is the coffee only lukewarm immediately after brewing? It is obviously preheating in the few moments before beginning the brew.

Have a question about cleaning. I have everything set up just like video, it cleaned 1 cycle. Now i have the water & milk reservoirs still full of water minus a double shot. Am i supposed to stand here cleaning, dumping etc, etc till reservoirs r empty?
One clean cycle is enough. If you haven't already, wash and dry each part before first use. Once all parts have been cleaned and the clean cycle is completed, you can start making drinks. I put the portafilter in the dishwasher and it came out with this thick black residue on it. I've cleaned it over and over and I still see the black residue on it. That cannot be safe to ingest, can it? Any idea what that black residue even is?

My machine is leaking and theres no water coningout of frother
So far I am disappointed with the strength of the coffee. I used the double filter size, filled it with Starbucks fine mocha grounds, lighty tamped it, and tried a double cappuccino. Pleanty of froth, but very, very weak on the coffee side. When I tried to add more expresso to my drink, it came out pretty watery for the amount of coffee used. In my normal coffee maker the amount used would have been too strong for me. I feel like I am wasting coffee with this unit. I will try an Americano next time, the cappuccino is just too weak with no real way to strengthen it.😢
your problem is you’re using flavored grounds, you need to use pure espresso. i recommend cafe bustelo
Try a finer grind, sounds like it’s under extracted
@peanutbutttr I tried the Cafe Bustelo, it definitely was an improvement over what I was using!
The milk container snaps in. How do I get it back out?
@erikerikerik4 hold down on the bottom of the machine, and then lift up the milk container little bit, it should then pull right out.
Got one for Xmas and it’s just making a loud thumping sound and nothing is coming out. 🙄
What’s the lever in the portafilter’s hand for?
It’s for retaining the grind disc in the portafilter when discarding the grounds
Can someone tell me how it’s 3 layers in this video but it’s only the milk from the reservoir and the espresso?
if youre talking about the layers of the drink.. theres steamed milk + milk foam + coffee!! the foam is very light so it always stays at the top. the coffee itself also creates a very dark foam which is separate & adds to the layers
You should make a longer video explaining the froth volume because the way it is displayed is misleading and you end up with a huge mess
Agree. It's like my dial doesn't do much and it appears clockwise is supposed to be less froth.
Mines doesn’t do non of the step you mention. I am doing the clean and it blinks and does not clean at all. I press of the other options and still nothing

Hello. I used my machine for the first time this morning and made a cappuccino. Was great. Now what doni do with all the left over milk? Does it get thrown out each time? That’s a lot of milk to waste

Just got one for Xmas ... not working at all. No water is coming out of either reservoir. Making a weird raptor calling noise when we try to make anything. So far disappointed.

At first mine didn't work but then I did everything step by step as shown on the video and it worked. If you don't do the cleaning cycle and place the plastic tanks correctly, it will not work.
Put water in the back and run a cleaning cycle a few times and make sure you have the milk reservoir pushed back all the way it’ll click when it’s in
How often should I clean this
The manual says to run a vinegar and water mix through it every month (or other month) depending on the hardness of your water and amount of usage in that time period.
@@mrwilly41 that's for the descaling I think correct? I think the other one that says clean on the machine that's the one you do after every coffee you make
@@mrwilly41 i am blind. How much vinegar do i use?or do i need to put the vinegar on the 1 shot metal cup thing? And do i put water on both the milk container and the back tank?

For descaling: Fill the water reservoir with equal parts water and vinegar and run the clean cycle. Run it again with just water. (Do not fill the milk reservoir). See detailed instructions in the GCM4230 user manual on this page here: www.gourmia.com/item.asp?item=10421

I think I found something!
So, I was very determined to get a cup of espresso this morning. So I spent about an hour trying to figure out why the machine was not dispensing water for first time use priming. I just happened to put some weight/pressure on the espresso water reservoir (while it was in the cleaning mode), kind of pushing/pressing it downward, and boom, there it went. It started to dispense water from the milk reservoir tank for priming.
Hope this helps someone.

As soon as I clicked the "cappuccino" option not even 3 seconds later, the frothing tube just put out a ton of smoke and filled my kitchen with smoke in seconds. The machine then caught on fire in the back and died. Amazing product, will never buy again.
