      lowlypeasant I don't think he meant "intrinsically paternalistic". as a pater, I have to think of paternalism in a positive light. He didn't even stop to analyze if Matt was using the right terms. He was using big words so he must be intelligent.

    For all the people who can't seem to understand it, Basing teachers salaries on student performance is a horrible Idea for the following reasons.
    1. It depends on the Student's performance just as much as the teacher's. If a student doesn't show up for class, if their parents don't give them time to study, or make them go to school daily, if they just don't care about education and pay no attention, the teacher's hands are completely tied.
    You can't MAKE kids learn. You can only inspire them to learn.
    2. Parents are also a key element in education. You can't learn and retain absolutely everything during school hours. Students have to study, they need structure, thy have to do homework. they need to eat properly and have a reasonable bed time. And only the worst of parents will argue against this.
    Inner city schools perform worse than highly funded suburban schools. Why is that? Could it have to do with parenting?
    Answer the following:
    If a great number of their students barely show up for class, what can a teacher do?
    If their students do not want to do their homework and their parents don't help their kids or give them the tools necessary to understand the need to do it, What can the teacher do?
    If the students have parents who let them stay up until 2am playing GTAV, and come to school like zombies who want to sleep through class and have no homework or studying done, What can a teacher do?
    The answer to all of these is "nothing."
    There is nothing the teacher can do. They can tell a counselor or send kids to the principal, but the system is set up to accomplish nothing when it comes to holding parents and students responsible for their own inaction in regards to their education.
    A teacher can't even do anything if a student becomes combative and wants to throw things or yell at/threaten the teacher who is just trying to do their job, because they don't want to be told to be quiet or to do an assignment. (and yes, this happens all the time.)
    The teachers who go to these schools and teach, have the same education as the teachers in the suburbs, yet they face a greater challenge on a daily basis. and honestly, the teachers (like my wife) who do it in nicer schools also face these challenges. (even if it's on a smaller scale.)
    Should they be paid less than the already substandard salary they are offered because the challenges of teaching in an inner city school are greater? because they work hard? because they care enough to work in a place that would challenge the greatest of teachers?
    If a first year teacher only makes around $28K a year after going to school for 4 years and building up tens of thousands of dollars of debt in some cases, what inspiration would they have to work in these schools if they are threatened to make even less for reasons they have very little control over? It's an idiotic notion.
    you want to threaten the pay of someone in education? Then go to the United States Department of Education and tell them you want a higher standard of education. Ask them why parents aren't held responsible for leading their own children down a road of failure that teachers have no control over.
    But stop blaming the ONE group of people who make it their responsibility to educate our youth.

      I agree that we shouldn't pay teachers based on the performance of their students , but we should judge teachers based on their own performance and we should be able to fire the poor performing teachers . After all , our goal is to better educate students . Are you an advocate for inner city cops getting equal or greater salaries than that of suburban cops ?

    • @L1Games
      @L1Games 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Teachers (at least here in Ohio) are judged based on their performance. They are evaluated yearly.
      after a teachers contract runs out (the end of they year.) the district can replace a teacher.
      Police salary is dictated by the City's income.
      Bigger cities tend to pay more. Small towns, less. A cop or teacher always have the ability to apply wherever they like. the pay scales are public record. they choose if they want to apply someplace that pays more or less.

      It's embarrassing that Anderson Cooper is even a "journalist". What he just did is what a 17 year old girl does who has a crush on a boy. He actually paused the video and said, "Snap." I mean, what kind of accomplished journalist behaves this way?
      As for Cooper swooning over the "intrinsically paternalistic view" phrase, it shows how Cooper didn't take the time to actually think about what that statement even means, but just likes how it sounded. Why is suggesting that many people work hard and try to better themselves because of job insecurity "paternalistic". IT MAKES NO SENSE. (By the way, I don't at all agree with this young lady, she is irrational and obtuse, but Damon's statement on working hard due to job insecurity being paternalistic is completely bizarre.) And is Cooper able to parse this statement and unpackage it and take it for what it is: word salad? Nope. He is gushing over those two words and giggling. The whole thing is embarassing.

      I actually think this is an interesting topic, and one that Matt's wrong about. People with tenure sometimes stop caring about their current career. There do need to be standards. At the same time I do think we need to be cautious about getting rid of good teachers, and make sure we're working on making the career rewarding enough we continue to get new, good teachers.

      Brian Nelson Various studies have shown that job security increases productivity. Obviously there are some who abuse their positions but the fast majority do not, many teachers with short term contracts will struggle to feel invested in either their subject or their studnets and become quickly disenchanted with what is really a pretty hard, unrewarding profession.

    • @BrianNelson
      @BrianNelson 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      curleyjoe666 That doesn't at all mean that job security makes everyone a good teacher. I've had good and bad teachers. I've worked with good and bad colleagues. Once you go down a career path, at a certain point, it's really hard to switch. That really sucks but it sucks for the kids as well to be stuck with a substandard teacher.
      I am just saying there need to be standards. I don't have all the answers, but to assume that every teacher is good and doing well and doing a responsible job with our children is a bit naive.

    As a teacher, I just discovered a new reason to respect and admire Matt Damon. Who is actually stupid enough to link teachers' salaries with student performance, especially in today's world where teachers have absolutely NO authority, and NO say in the curriculum? There are plenty of ways to improve the American education system, and one of them is to throw out the dumb "No child left behind" policy.

    • @miniredsatan
      @miniredsatan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Fra Daw what makes you think the powers that be, who created that system, want "educated" children or even skilled teachers? what the owners of this country want are a bunch of dumbed down authoritarian worshipping morons and that's exactly what they're getting. i've taught in american schools and fucking bailed out...shit cirriculums, shit administrators, shit parents and shit students. i teach in asia now, make twice as much and actually have hard working focused students. and parents actually give a shit how their kids perform. stop wasting your time in a system literally designed to fail.

      +Generalissimo X You are so right. It is shocking how ignorant children, adolescents and adults are in this country today. A 35 year old man was asked on the street what country did we (USA) gain independence from? He couldn't answer the question. A Long Island adolescent was asked what was the ocean on the eastern coast of the USA, and she replied, "The Pacific?" The same poor thing when asked what the war between the north and south was called, answered, "World War Two?"

    • @fradaw6013
      @fradaw6013 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Russell I totally agree with you. There are a number of reasons for the lousy performance by students in American schools today, starting with this dumb policy of "No child left behind." It sure sounds great, doesn't it. But the truth is that not all children are created equal, and some actually need to repeat some grades in order to gain the knowledge required. "No child left behind" has resulted in thousands of students being socially promoted without learning even half the material. The problems for that individual then get snowballed until he/she can no longer handle the school environment at all, and they either drop out or develop behaviour issues.

Yes, I said "hundreds" because the average homeroom teacher educates 600 to 1000 students during his/her entire career. That's a lot of teaching, and a lot of responsibility. How many children have YOU educated in your lifetime, Mr. Defcon, or whatever your name is? You toss around a lot of numbers that I challenge you to verify. +Bartek Bierbasz I'm under the impression that porn stars and shopkeepers are paid pretty well for the work they do. (Porn stars seemingly make more money, on average, and work shorter hours - it's a good profession if you're okay with being filmed having sex with strangers.) A gravedigger, less so, but a teacher is a profession that requires an education and serious involvement, while a gravedigger is an entry-level position with no education requirement. And there's no reason to assume a gravedigger works longer hours than anyone else.
      The logic does not apply to all professions. Please do not attempt to discredit Matt, just because you realise the simple fact that his logic is not all-encompassing.

And 40k a year is not a 'shit salary'. That's $3300 a month. Just drive by any schools teacher parking lot. Not very many 10 year old clunkers sitting in there. Like the rest of America.

    • @jabogyo
      @jabogyo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You guys should probably teach before you say it's a "part time job."
      I do it everyday, and it's hard work. I definitely don't like the part where I struggle financially every month. After taxes, union fees, insurance, and retirement I bring in a whopping $24k, and that's higher than most. That's more like $2000 a month. God, if I could have $3,300 a month, I'd be sitting real pretty. Meanwhile, I'm 24 years old and I'm trying to make my life in a completely new city on "maybe I'll have enough to buy two boxes of cereal this time..."
      I don't know one teacher who only works 7:30a to 3:30p. I have homework every night that needs to be graded and lessons that need to be planned. And you know what, even if I work my ass off for those 8 hours plus the extra, you and the parents of my students probably still won't be satisfied with me when realistically, it's the kids and the parents who should be taking most of the blame.
      Not to mention, that to keep my credentials, I have to go back to school and continue to learn. And maybe if I pay for that, out of my own pocket, I could get a pay raise.

    • @jabogyo
      @jabogyo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ***** What motivates an individual to criticize people who are trying to make their own way in the world? Money isn't everything. I didn't become a teacher to earn a ton of money. I got into teaching because I love it. You know nothing about my perspective or about me, so your judgment make no difference in my life.
      I've read your TH-cam comments and more than anything, I pity you. You seem to be on a mission to take everyone down a notch, and it's probably because you have low self-worth. So rather than criticize others, you should try and treat others in the same way that you would want them to treat you. That's the way I try to live. Maybe then you can make some friends and you'll start to gain some confidence!
      Good luck!

    • @jabogyo

      Your mom must have taught at a school with great kids and great parents. Even bad teachers look good in those situations. Try teaching at a school where you fight every day to try and get kids away from gangs, where every student eats a free lunch, parents don't show up for most functions, and the school has to have extra security measures to keep students safe. It's not easy. My school makes you look like an ignoramus. Teachers stay until 6 or 7 every night, principals visit your room on a daily basis, data is collected daily and actually used, not to mention the rigorous evaluation system that the district has adopted for all teachers to meet.
      You may think you know, and maybe you do know about some schools, but don't act like you know every school. People tell me how it used to be here, and it sounds awful, but the changes that have gone into effect are visibly changing the community for the better. I get paid very little for the effort I put in, but I don't need the money. If I can change my student's lives, that's good enough for me.

      Gabriel Ross Nice strawman.

    • @gabrielross9226
      @gabrielross9226 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not a straw man if you can't knock it down. One of the problem in education today is the fallacy that aptitude or interest is universal. In prior eras, students with low aptitudes just dropped out or were put on technical tracks. Nowadays, they stay in and struggle. So half the class is below grade level and half is at or above. That is tragic, but not a teacher's fault. That is the fault of government and culture and no teacher can individually compensate for that. Some teachers make some students hate learning. Of course. But you make it sound like a recipe. Maybe what made you hate learning made somebody else love it. Some people like a challenge. Some people don't. What you think is good teaching, I might think is terrible. And what was unclear or incoherent about the argument. It made perfect sense to me. If you disagree with it, then that's your opinion and you can try to persuade me otherwise. But don't use some silly charge backed up by nothing but 'that's what I feel' to make your point. I thought my teachers were lame when I was 16 too. Then I grew up and stopped blaming other people for my own mistakes. My PE teacher didn't make me hate PE. I already hated it. And I happened to like music a lot. I just said that to make a point. I didn't like math when I was a teenager. Later in college I enjoyed it. No teacher made me hate it or like it. It's just the way I was at that time in my life. The things I liked about teachers were usually just things I already liked. That could just be me. But I don't think so.

    • @coaster61
      @coaster61 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gabriel Ross I do not need to "knock down" a strawman. It is an argument you have applied to me that YOU have thoroughly knocked down. You win because you defeated an argument I never made.
      What I'm actually saying is that there are some teachers who make learning incredibly unbearable for students. Children associate some pretty negative things to learning and just one reason is some bad apple teachers. I never said teachers cause every problem in learning. You not liking PE for whatever non-teacher-related reason doesn't mean that no student ever was discouraged by a teacher's style.
      You know what I'm saying is not profound. You even said you agree. You very much disagree with the reporter in this video, and so do I (I disagree with both, and Anderson's childishness too). But you think I agree with her and that's why you are so upset right now, enough to strawman my very simple point.
      "So you take this MBA style thinking, right? It's the problem with ed policy right now--is this intrinsically paternalistic view of problems that are much more complex than that."
      This is gibberish.

      People like to believe their kids are so perfect and that all the problems must be the teacher's fault, but when you see how many kids act and then see how parents communicate with teachers, you'll understand why America is falling behind in education. It's society...

      so with combining holding the teachers responsible Why can't we also hold students responsible. If they don't have the will to learn what the parents to make them learn we always need ditch diggers cabbage pickers and so forth. And all those jobs are needed and no one performing them should be looked down upon for doing hard work. But they hold everyone else back including the teachers. No Lib that I've heard crying about the teachers has supported cracking down the students or acknowledging there are poor teachers that are protected by the union.So if they are crying about people criticizing been one-sided they are just as one-sided.

      I had an african american geometry teacher in high school... she taught one day a week, we watched a movie once a week, talked about personal lives, goofed off/did nothing while she was on the computer.... All I'll say is there's no way she was still there for her "work ethic". Something about the need for diversity?
      After several years, she was fired after continually not giving finals or anything else and telling her kids to skip class and they'd get 100's.
      Yes, there are definitely bad teachers, but testing is a VERY inadequate way of telling whether a teacher is bad or not.
      Last random note: She was observed while I was in this "teacher's" class once. She told us to do the exact same hands on (super easy) project she had us do a few days before, so that everyone knew how to do it and she'd look good. After about 2 minutes, I just took out my project from the day before, walked up to her and said "finished" to both the surprise of the "teacher" and the observer.
      This "teacher" simply answered the unasked questions of the observer by reminding him that I was the son of the math teacher across the hall....... Lots of paper footballs were made in this class...

      Tons of really good actors go without recognition. Performance, like in any job, does not ensure success or further job opportunities. This was essentially his point.
      As regards the remark by Mrs. Damon here, the validity and reliability of statistics like "10% of teachers are bad" needs to be met with some skepticism, IMO. How does one measure the "quality" of teaching exactly? In any case, are there not confounding variables which could contribute to the skewing of such results; like the "quality" of *parenting*, for instance - or the lamentable paucity of any incentive (the latter being a result of the fact that the importance of many such professions is not ultimately reflected in their wages)?
      Giving them the benefit of the doubt, though, even if it were true that such a high number of teachers taught so poorly as to be labelled "bad", does that then mean the "remaining" *90%* deserve no such suitable fruits for their labours?
      Also ... Matt Damon ... "rude"?!
      I think defending such an inherently defensible profession from the protestations of Randian ignoramuses (a redundant moniker, IMO) in the way he just did is admirable.

    Pretty much any profession has a % of people that just aren't a good fit but in many professions people either quit for something that is a better fit or, they get fired because they aren't performing well.
    The problem with teaching is many teachers can't do anything else & make the same money. Not to mention the time off & benefits packages. Those that are not a good fit for the job will stay because they can't get a different job that has equal pay & benefits.
    When you make it virtually impossible to fire a bad teacher that just compounds the problem & you end up with more & more bad teachers.
    That isn't fair to the students that have little or no control over who their teacher is & it's not fair to the truly good, dedicated teachers out there.
    There is nothing wrong with paying teachers well, that attracts good people but when the unions & laws make it hard to get rid of the bad ones it becomes a problem.
    Teaching is one of the few jobs where someone that is really bad can dig their heels in & keep doing a bad job for years, entire careers even, and not get fired.

      @@ekpurdy He did answer the question. The answer was that competitive teaching will not breed better teachers, nor compensate good teachers to the level at which we think they should. The entire entertainment industry is a luxury similar to sports, and can be measured/compensated by competition because of the fact that it's not necessary. Any form of entertainment is excess and not actually needed, therefore it can be self-regulated through competitive means. Teaching doesn't fit that same category at all, and the problems that come with it can't be solved by simply applying competitive competition to teachers. All it would do is breed rubber-stampers in the industry that look successful on paper, but in fact are not doing their actual job.

      I don't think you guys are wrong, but it's kind of hard to just shift all the burden onto the parents and leave the system as it is. Kid goes away all day and the parent gets shit on if the kid isn't functioning well in the school? Then it's the parents responsibility to make the kid function within this school... It doesn't work like that. The school has a large bit of responsibility for the outcome in this situation. The school being shit could easily be the cause of problems or an amplifier. Fix what you can, I don't know how you can fix parents but there are many out there with ideas on fixing education.

      yxrf1xg0 People no longer get to be home with their children. Both parents work. You have to. Then there are the people who can't parent. I hate shitty parents. The majority of the responsibility should rest with the schools since the kids are there like any job, but how can you hold the school responsible when you wont allow them to do whats necessary? I wouldn't take my car to the mechanic and demand he fixes it, but he better not touch it or i'll sue his ass and completely ruin his life by making it so he wont get hired anywhere else. We need to get some real teachers in these schools as well as be more involved with what the kids are doing. Pay these teachers, man! Who wouldn't just give up when they can't even afford their homes, cars and bills. Fuck the system and fuck the parent that refuse to change to make a better system.

    • @yxrf1xg0
      @yxrf1xg0 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's necessary? I'm not quite getting your mechanic analogy, I wouldn't want the school touching my kid. Is that seen as necessary by you? Possibly just unclear wording there. As far as frustration with the system.. Teachers aren't unique with those frustrations. Those parents that you seem to dislike are likely in the same boat as you. They probably have a very similar line of thinking that ends with fuck those teachers. How would you define shitty parents? I think you might lose some of those constraints on whatever it is you consider necessary to the job if there was a greater element of choice in the matter from the parent's perspective. There would be a form of consent to a teaching method and both sides might work together much better this way. You might be right about the pay, I don't know. I haven't sifted through the us and them to make much sense of it. If the system is so bad though not putting more money into the same scheme doesn't seem terribly irrational. Might work to put it this way, unions have a way of acting that makes sense toward negotiation with an employer. With the schools, it doesn't seem like the interest of the parent is represented. It's like a negotiation with one side absent. Can't solve problems that way. Parents are diverse, but if they were offered options of schools to choose from the parents you need to work with would likely sort themselves into groups that would be easier to work with. Parents with similar concerns should choose similar options to meet those concerns and dealing with a group of like minded people should make solving problems much easier. Maybe approval of the system goes up and those votes that impact teacher pay return more favorable results. Maybe teacher pay becomes a third rail for everybody. Hiring good teachers and paying them more isn't likely to fix the system alone. There are good teachers, they just have to work within so many constraints. It's like taking a steak grinding it up and mixing it with pigs feet. Finally what I post here might be wrong in some way or many ways, but dammit it didn't hinge upon the morality of government : ) Got to give me that one point if nothing else.

    So teachers don't care about their salaries? They only teach because they want to teach? That's funny, because MILLIONS of teachers go on strike in this country because they demand HIGHER PAY.
    If Matt Damon thinks that money does not incentivize him to act, maybe he should act in movies for free without being compensated and we'll see how long he will last. How do you like them apples?

Money provides an incentive to keep your job and not screaming at customers (because in doing so would result in the loss of your job, aka money). Would teachers around the country wake up 5 days a week to teach a bunch of kids if they weren't being compensated? I didn't think so.

      What difference does it make if their salary was cut or that it was not a certain value? This illustrates my point even further, MONEY CREATES INCENTIVES. If the teachers didn't care about money ie salary being cut, then they wouldn't go on strike.
      "Teaching and acting don't correlate as professions so you can't contrast the two in that regard."
      Actually teaching and acting are professions, and they are professions they will compensate you with money if and when you decide to teach or act. Again, if Damon doesn't think acting does not incentive people to act, stop asking for x million dollars per movie and just do it for free. Do you honestly think he, or any other actor in Hollywood, would continue to act?

    Teachers want to teach? Fine, let them teach. No one is saying they can't. They can teach all they want, but parents ought to have the power to decide which schools and teachers they pay for. Also, parents shouldn't have to pay for a failing, public school system they're not using on top of paying for a private school. Don't even get me started on Common Core. Matt stands beside all these union teachers (most probably aren't teachers but professional protesters) who are afraid of greater parental choice drying up their jobs. Where do you think his kids go to school? You can damn sure bet it isn't a public school. He wouldn't be caught dead sending his kids to a public school. Sadly, seems he's so deluded the hypocrisy is probably lost on him.

Maybe you should tell your moneyhungry politicans to stop throwing your money in the mouth of big companies and maybe start to invest it in the only thing that will save this country from being eaten by a hungry fast growing dragon. Your Kids and their education. If the public schools would get only the money the agencies of your country use to spy on you citizens no matter what youve done for the country. You probably would have one of the best school systems in the western hemisphere. But u cant build a working car if you are only given wood sticks. Dont judge the school system. We have done nothing but throw money at our educational system for the last 30-40 years! We are spending many many times more now than what we were in the 70s and 80s. When asked, the answer is always the same... We need more money! More money! More money! Talks about a hungry maw. We have reached the point in the life cycle of the system where throwing more money at it will not gain us much of anything. Yet so much and so many are entrenched, there is really isn't much else we can do to it but throw money. Money we don't have. YES, I think we need a clean slate. Mind you, I'm not necessarily talking about a system free of the public domain. I'm up for whatever works. I can also separate how we pay from what we're paying for. What we are paying for now is NOT working. I think we can all agree on that. In that spirit, privatizing should be considered an option. Consider that a more privatized system would likely result in subdivided school districts creating a number of smaller schools with smaller class sizes. Show me anyone who doesn't want that. Including teachers. Speaking of teachers, qualified teachers with good records would likely find expanded opportunities by way of greater competition. They could be commanding higher salaries while teaching smaller more focused classes. As far as 50% not being able to afford it, As I said, I'm not opposed to a public option if it works.Charter schools, many of whom receive gov funding are doing great things in the inner city these days. That is when they aren't under attack from democrats and teachers unions.

    • @VirtualSuperSoldier
      @VirtualSuperSoldier 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thrillcekr comparing private schools to private prisons is a bit apples to oranges but here we go: Private schools are usually paid for by the parents/family of the children attending, and donations. Also, some states have programs where tax payers can use a bit of their state taxes to fund scholarship programs that might go to private schools (might). There are also state funded voucher programs that allow under privileged kids to go to private schools as well. Private prisons on the other hand, are paid for by contract between a private entity and a state or federal government. In other words, purely the allocation of tax dollars. It's not as if prisoners or their families are not being made to pay for their incarceration like parents pay for private school. The success of private prisons depends on who you talk to and their political leanings. I think in the long run however, when factoring in retirement and health benefits that the government will not be paying, it might be a better deal for the taxpayer. The private contractor is responsible for their own retirement and health benefit plans, after all. I suspect it's the same story for Your local DMV. No public employees = no retirement or healthcare for taxes to pay. States all across the country have identified privatization as a way of reducing costs and debt. That is a good thing. As far as judges taking payoffs, blame the payer or payee? No payoff can be made if the judge doesn't take it. But all that aside, we are talking about schools. I agree with your statement that the biggest problems can't be fixed by more money, i.e., throwing more money at our educational system won't solve anything. We need to consider a new system. I also agree that parents should get more involved in their children's education. Which is exactly what many of them are attempting to do by taking their kids out of public school and putting them in private or charter schools. They should have every right to do this as legal guardians of their child if they think it will help. There is surprising resistance to this. Sometimes even direct political attack. My last point is this: why do so many assume that if we don't pay for the education of our children through taxes, that they won't get educated or that it won't get paid for?

    I don't think that the Libertarian interviewer could have picked a worse angle to go from. It's not that teachers will be incentivised to do better by having job insecurity, it's that having pay based on performance will enable us to marginalise and get rid of the truly horrendous teachers in the public schools that we are stuck with because of Teacher Unions and teacher-tenure. We need to be able to sack bad teachers, otherwise the students will suffer.
    I'm sorry, if a teacher has consistent A-grade classes across the board on standardised tests, then they are a better teacher that someone whose classes have been failing over the same period, and they deserve to be paid more.
    I know about the argument that it's bad parenting causing poor child performance, but why then are the education establishment opposed to every attempt to test this theory? A voucher system would put those same failing students, with the same parents at home, in new schools of the parents choosing. If it is their home life causing their failure, then the bad results would follow them to the new school

This is derived from a paternalistic need to provide for a family, through job security and a drive to excel which means more money. Damon was clarifying that most in the teaching profession, and even his profession, do not live by that ideal. Passion for the profession is what drives them to not only work the profession, but to excel at it as well.

      There is no argument. There could have been an argument but Elijah decided to call me a Jackass and attack me personally instead of my arguments.
      Now he thinks he's the winner because he thinks he tried to "save me' and failed in his virtuous attempt.
