I think the saddest part is that Nextbots in theory are extremely promising, there is so much you can do with this technology, but all the actual efforts at making something cool get drowned in a sea of PNGs. so even a Nextbot category wouldn't be enough to separate the gold from the garbage.

What bothers me the most is that nextbots existed for years and suddenly they are the "most terrryfing thing to ever exist". Its slender level stuff, come on.
I blame moronic zoomers who only use tik-toc and act surprised when something everyone had already seen has appeared in their stupid for you page.
They seem to just be an annoyance more then anything.

I think the worst part of nextbots is that they're the new type of 'kiddie horror' that games like Hello Neighbor or Poppy Playtime go for- Effortless jumpscares with loud noises yet done with easily recognizable and marketable characters
There was one I saw where it's a black figure that slowly moves around the map and disappears when looked at, only to eventually run at the player while muting all sounds, and it was actually kinda creepy
Mascot horror is the next big thing. I have respect for the first FNAF game but that is about it. Honestly its degradation of the horror genre as because of the popularity of Slender the 8 pages and Amnesia most horror games now are just run away and play hide and seek but now with a mascot character. Mascot horror is kind of like the evolution of creepy pasta characters, they are supposed to be dangerous monsters yet can also play double duty as being your friends for some sort of self fulfillment fan fiction. And just like other franchises like Sonic or MLP mascot horror leads to people creating a lot of OC's.
Mascot horror and mascot horror for kids can be done properly but there is a reason why "it's for kids" is a cop out for not putting in effort into your work.

Looking for a high quality Nextbot is same as looking for a good dupe, both being comparable to finding a needle in a haystack.
There's this one dupe from 2012 called Swirly Slide. I added it to my favorites the same year and it's just this colorful slide that's fun to mess around with. Though I think it was originally from GMod 12.

What the workshop needs more than anything is search operators. Finding ANYTHING on the platform that isn't mainstream is next to impossible. For example, I should be able to type "Dragon -Ball -Dragonball" to get models of dragons but exclude the endless stream Vegeta and Broly ragdolls.
Yeah I agree, I try to look for animation mods for weapons and npcs and the anim in animation causes anime mods to show up only. But I think that's more of a steam related issue and not a gmod one
Seeing how dated the AI of HL2 is makes me wonder if it would be possible to convert that game into using nextbot AI. It’s make the Combine soldiers quite a lot more difficult to fight against, given how they’re supposed to be transhuman super soldiers and all.

It'd probably be easier to play HL2 in its entirety from within GMod. Plus it's fun to goof around with.
I've dreamed about making a sort of "hl2 advanced" mod that would completely revitalise the game but I'm just a lazy peasant who can't be bothered to learn how to mod
There's a mod that "forces" all NPCs to use navmeshes, but from my experience it only made their AI worse
@@jesuiscrespo The description literally says the normal NPCs aren't build for this and still priorities AI Nodes when possible. Only when they can't find their way to their destination the navmesh is used, also there are settings were you can adjust stuff.

Have we really reached the point where wanting quality over quantity makes you a "bad" person in the eyes of some people? If the Nextbots weren't so abundant people wouldn't have an issue since them flooding the steam workshop is the main problem people have.
Personally, I think that if effort was put into the Nextbots in the way that Gargitron was, they would actually be interesting. And I'm not saying that I want the Gargitron AI to get the same treatment as the Sanic Nextbots, but imaging fully animated 3d characters using something akin to the Garg AI.
I think some of the nextbot memes are absurd and funny, I don't have much of a problem with them. It's just a dumbass trend like Slenderman or FNAF, based on shitty PNGs in a 16 years old game. People, mostly kids, will eat that shit up regardless. I feel like there's no use crying about it, it'll pass like any trend.

@@ghhn4505 No, not really. I'm not in favor of gatekeeping by any means, and I'm never the one doing the things that people seem to see as worthy of it. This nextbot thing is just people having fun and getting "spooked" with their friends, and it seems to me to be the same as every other trend to pass through GMod. If anything, It's already passed at this point. The best thing to do is to just ignore it, although the ideal solution would be for the workshop to find a way to let you filter it out, like giving PNG nextbots their own tag.

From my experience I've been saying that mobile game quality and community integrity slowly degrading as there is way way too much live service games especialy riddle with gambling mechanics but apparently that is make too much sense then proceed to be apathetic and pretend your not exist anymore so in the end I'm just leave the community because once the community become apathetic they are doom to fail just like certain sith said "apathy is death".

Its kinda the sad truth of chasing fame in the modern Internet, but with the advent of TikTok and short form content. The algorithm kinda loves people who stick to one gimmick and don't experiment, its really sad too. Because you get mega views if you do the samw repeated thing over and over, and not adhering to that can risk a lot for these creators.

Most of them are labeled “Nextbot” I think the workshop should go the route of Google and allow you to type the minus key “-“ followed by any word or phrase you wish to omit. Sure, it won’t get all of them, but it’ll sift a lot of the bs out.

If only Google still actually did this! Nowadays when I try this google will more often than not ignore my input and give me results it *thinks* I want to see. Ditto with using quotes for an exact text search.

This is something I've thought about for quite some time...Yeah, I was there when virtually the only nextbot was sanic, saw the expansion of this trend, and I continued making content off of it (which had inevitable creative constraints as time went on), and yeah, hopefully you can trust me it was all in good fun at the time. Eventually, as everything expanded, it came to the point where I'd have to scroll and skip through many of what were basically 'nextbot png' pages in the workshop, and couldn't help but ask myself in those moments: '...Wait, did I do this? Did I actually ruin this game?' Of course, the trend has recently seen a massive spike in popularity as pointed out here, but even before it blew up like this it was still kind of a problem. At this point, here's hoping it goes with any trend on the internet: dead, and people move on to cooler mod ideas and things. The game deserves at least that much.

I completely feel your annoyance and frustration. I enjoy "liminal" spaces but I hate how kids think they are actually scary. The only reason why they think its scary is from pre-conceived knowledge that empty spaces are just supposed to be scary because a spooky meme monster is going to get you. For me they are peaceful and a time to just get away from everything like a fishing spot.

there is a really good standalode gamemode which builds on nextbots called "KISHKIXD". obviously youtube deletes links all the time so i hope its not a bother for anyone to check it out.

@Doc K I understand your point of view, how a rapture like event could be unnerving and uncomfortable. As you said though it is something that is supposed to be subtle and most people do not understand that and often forget what made "backrooms" or "liminal spaces" appealing to begin with. The horror factor though of liminal spaces exists but is overhyped in my opinion.
Steam should really add an "exclude" feature, where you can type in something like in this instance type in "nextbot" and it will filter out nextbot for you

Sadly, this would filter out all the GOOD nextbot mods. Check out the Metal Gear Rising nextbot mod. Incredibly creative with the tech.

Yep I love nico's nextbots but roblox is becoming more and more hostile to asian players because of crappy high ping. If the ping cap lowers and roblox would fix the un rendered game maps I would go back.
Hey Richter! Nice video, just a few things I want to go over that weren't quite accurate:
1) GMod is built on the Source SDK. So is HL2: Deathmatch, but that doesn't mean they share lineage. The Nextbot framework might've been there from the start, or it might've come during an SDK upgrade. In any case, the node system still exists in GMod! Nothing had to be adapted. Old NPCs still do everything the old way.
2) The Harmless Companion Cube addon does not use the Nextbot framework. It was released in like 2008 by TetaBonia, one of the biggest devs around that time. I don't even remember GMod having old-style AI bindings back then, let alone the Nextbot bindings which came out in 2013. HCC uses some clever LOS checks and traces instead.
3) I don't think anyone besides whoever made that Nextbot Creator tool (I'd never seen that before lmao) ever called these things "Sanic Nextbots". (I appreciate the attempt at a distinction, though.) They were just "Nextbots" because that's the spawnmenu category I put Sanic into. He's written against the Nextbot bindings, and he was as much of a test NPC to me as that Mossman one was to Garry, so it made sense.
There weren't a lot of Nextbot-based NPCs at the time and I wasn't about to create my own category for what I thought was a one-off. When everyone else made copies, they didn't change the category either. So the Nextbot category quickly fills up with PNG spam when you subscribe to this stuff. Nextbots.
4) That gmpublisher frontend has nothing to do with Nextbots or Sanic. It just makes it easier to use the command-line-based gmpublish tool GMod ships with. I guess that makes it easier to upload your own chasey bois (or any other addon) but it doesn't automate any of it like the other tool you talked about.
5) Just a general complaint that's not necessarily directed at you, but every video I see about these things focuses on the navigation. Nextbots are a whole framework! The navmesh is just one part of that! GMod stripped a lot of it out in favour of coroutines but that doesn't mean their defining feature is that they pathfind over quads. Maybe it's just the most noticable thing in GMod, idk.
Overall, nice to see a recap of some of the history of these things. I was left out of the loop pretty much the whole time this was all going on so it's fun to see others dig into it. Felt a little weird that you avoided naming any names at all but... keep doin' what you do.
Thanks for the corrections. Really cool to know you saw this. I'm not a programmer and I don't know how the backend of these games work, so I was going off what some of my more technically inclined friends told me. Glad you seemed to enjoy the vid!

Well I mean the creator of those “Nico’s nextbots” next bots put in the description of some of them that he knows they come from gmod
The sad thing is I’ve seen people make really cool AI mods using the Nextbot framework. There’s really well made remakes of Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem enemies, amazing SCP addons that work much like Containment Breach and more, and even for these silly “scary” pngs- there’s Gargitron, which makes an effort to switch things up with how the AI chases the player. I just want to one day see nextbots evolve into something much smarter and more interesting.

Human mind just doesnt know any other reaction for sudden change of his senses like spicy taste after chocolate, vanilla smell and smell of the poop, sudden loud noise after silence or view change. Its more like confusion mixed up with surprise and sudden view /sound change.
Catch up off guard any animal with unknown loud sound or unknown behaviour, and they will act the same.

I think they should also add "effortlessly made tiktok meme" tag. Because I faced the same problem some time ago when I was trying to find normal npcs with nextbot AI so they can navigate on the maps with complex geometry without getting lost on every corner

I love the way gMod has attached itself to the liminal community. It’s honestly really interesting and it keeps the game relevant, so I honestly don’t mind the nextbot craze TOO too much.

I actually created a few nextbots, one of them appearing in this video. I didn’t get into the second wave of Nextbots, but I can give you a little more information on the community during the first wave, mainly because folks hated them then just as well. An incredible amount of complaints came from them all and HONESTLY I can’t blame them because they were all essentially the same.
I think their popularity came from the TH-camr Kuledud3, whose now MrsBreezy, they made a incredibly successful video featuring the sanic nextbot. But then one of their friends made a new Nextbot (I think they made it themselves at least) of the character Yooshi, then another of squidward. Notably all theses videos were insanely successful, racking views up into the millions.
Now, I never knew about the Nextbot creation tool, I had to learn crowbar and stuff just to make my bots so I’d assume either one of two things: I’m an idiot or the tool was built towards the end of the first wave of nextbots.
Anyways, because of Breezy, a lot of kids, myself included, wanted to get our creations featured on their channel so it spurred on a massive way of similar nextbots, all trying to compete for Breezy’s attention. Luckily for me I kind of fell out of that race due to some Robbie Rotten shenanigans and took the time to start editing bits of code within the nextbots I had made.
As for if they’re controversial… I don’t get it. It’s annoying when another one tops the rank of the steam workshop but Garry’s mod is a Sandbox. It can be whatever you want it to be. The existence of chase Nextbots shouldn’t hurt your enjoyment of the game because you can easily ignore it or not play with them. There are a million ways to play Garry’s mod and being chased by a creepy face of Obama is only one of them. And think of it like this; every new player joining Gmod for the chasebots might stay for the rest of Garry’s mod itself, the trend is more or less reviving Gmod after a fair bit of stagnation.

Breezy was definitely where the trend really picked up the pace into decent popularity. many people like myself first heard of nextbots from her old videos.
I think you dont get it, the issue with low quality nextbot isnt that they can just be ignored, its that if people put effort behind it we could have some real high quality AI.
For me the problem isn't with them existing or the "if you don't like them, don't play with them," it's the fact that the workshop gets absolutely flooded with them. I specifically use the addon tags to the side to choose NPCs only, Models only, Maps only, etc. and going under NPCs is absolute hell because png nextbots are quite literally all there is.
If you want to find actual quality addons you quite literally cannot ignore them because pages will be like 5-10% actual content and every other spot is either server content or sanic clones, and there are way more sanic clones than server content packages.

I've despised Nextbots for years just because of how oversaturated the workshop has become with them even before they blew up recently.
Whenever I just wanna find some cool NPCs like the Nextbot zombie packs, the most consistent result I've gotten over the last 10 years have always been the PNGs, I'm just sick of seeing them.
I don’t think the png nextbots should be removed. But I think they deserve their own workshop spot. Because I still want to find npcs on the workshop
I feel like DrVrej and he's incredible VJ Base SNPCs are the only thing combating the Nextbot plague.

I’ve had gmod since 2014, it was the main reason why I got steam. I remember watching msbreezy with the sanic nextbots and I remember downloading some of them so me and my friends could play with them. They got old quick, so I uninstalled them and forgot about them. I thought it was cool that they were popular again. I installed some and played around with them, but like with the old nextbots, they got boring quick. The workshop exploded with nextbots and gmod content on TH-cam and Tik tok were mostly nextbots. It’s to the point where people are thinking gmod is a “running away from spooky nextbots” simulator, there were people in the comments of nextbot videos (especially the Roblox versions) saying that paying for gmod is stupid, because they can play it on Roblox. It pisses me off.
Why do you care what people think? If the goal is to keep low effort nextbot content out, then isn't it a good thing that those people are getting filtered? Also no amount of low effort next bot npcs on the workshop is going to change Gmod in any fundamental way. There's great mods being released all the time, so why does it matter that there's also -subjectively- bad nextbot pngs? This comment section is making me feel crazy because the most nonsensical ideas are being given the thumbs up.

One of the first ever people I've seen using Nextbots waaaay before it blew up was MsBreezy, kinda sad to not hear her name being mentioned when people talk about Nextbots but eh. Can't wait for more content Richter!

I love that every time I spawn a Nextbot, give it a minute and it already gets stuck on map geometry or inside the map itself and always fails to even try to be scary cause of that lmao.

kids were so shielded from legitimately scary things that moving png's are scary to them now, meanwhile i can't get scared at all watching any horror movie or playing any horror games. let them have their fun.
I believe they just like to pretend to be scared to be part of some community, the same reason why sonic.exe is still a thing.

I don't mind nextbots but they aren't that scary unless the creator really tries to *make* them scary. There's nothing really scary about a funny PNG of a meme chasing you while blaring loud audio that hurts your ears. Sure they can startle you if they come out from around a corner but that's not something exclusive to just nextbots. All the nextbots are good for is just some small fun.
It was kind of funny when they started showing up in Gmod, but then people put it in their "creepy" maps and they all of a sudden they're the scariest thing to exist

As a gmod fan i honestly think that this excessive nextbots genre kinda ruined the gmod npcs community because instead of looking for your favorite npcs you just keep stumbling upon huge amounts of unnecessary nextbots that takes years for you in order to reach regular npcs which brothers me so much, and speaking about seperating nexbots from npcs is a very brilliant suggestion from you richter, steam must make a special nexbots tab to leave the players looking peacefully for their desired npcs.

Honestly, I got a personal softspot for nextbots as I have a lot of nostalgia for them from back in the day, but I completely understand the frustration of them flooding the workshop.
One thing I do not like for certain however, is their recent useage in "horror". I have never in my life seen nextbots as something directly scary (unless they appear out of no where and kill you instantly, which is nothing more than just shock from a jumpscare and nothing more), and have always seen them as more of a funny, goofy kind of thing. The fact that nextbots are mostly being referred to as a "horror" thing, even with the sillier nextbots ones like ishowspeed and quandale dingle of all things is just flat out stupid. Other than maybe a surprise jumpscare out of no where, they just aren't scary. Fun to play with and just funny comedic value? Yeah, especially if you are playing with friends and messing around with them on maps, but not proper horror scary in the slightest.
An extension to the thing that I just said, is that I also don't like their association with liminal maps and spaces in general. I will admit, playing with them on liminal space maps IS very fun in my experience (there is a poolrooms map that is quite fun to play with them on, in my experience), but liminal space maps directly being correlated to them doesn't make me feel right. Associating them with just "ohhh scary obunga chases me in the backrooms!!11!" severely puts down the quality and the general appeal of them, that being the strange architecture and errieness, among other things. Seriously, liminal space maps are an obsession of mine, and I absolutely love them, and seeing them popular does make me happy, and I know there's a lot of people who like them other than for glorified nextbot playgrounds, but it still bothers me a little.
Seriously, if you want an example of good quality content relating to them, or you want to know of more liminal space maps that aren't just the standard yellow carpeted backrooms or mallparking, then The Librarian is the PEAK channel for it (and it made me extremely happy seeing him mentioned at 8:01, he's an underrated channel, and while his gmod vr exploration videos are by far his most popular content and my favorite, I'd highly recommend watching his other stuff, it's amazing for anyone who loves horror like me that isn't just pngs). I think the youtuber MsBreezy (formerly known as Kul3dude) was most likely the one who really started the nextbot popularity all those years ago. her old videos are where I first heard about nextbots, and she had a decent amount of subscribers for a youtuber who regularly played gmod, meaning that a lot of other people probably first saw nextbots in her videos.
I’m mostly just annoyed that it’s harder to find the good npcs, at least with five nights at Freddy’s stuff I’d know if it wasn’t my thing from the title, but nextbots don’t have that, they’re all named a bunch of random things

I absolutely hated the sanic nextbot craze when it first came about because nextbots have potential and could be used for so many cool things, but they just got reduced to a bunch of meme PNGs that kill you you. History really does repeat itself
Liminal spaces are scary because suddenly a place who used to be populated is now empty. Your survival instincts are trained to get crazy when this happens. Like your cavern with your family is empty all of sudden.
They used to be really fun when we had things like sanic,but now I can't even search for a new gmod video without the video revolving around nextbots.

When I was a kid, I remember that GMod was primarily full of cool stuff, 3D NPC's and others. It was Doom modding community where I firstly found lots of PNG bots and WADs full of these motherfuckers. So now, when the GMod is also full of that, I have pretty strong Doom vibes...
Gatekeeping is fine so long as you have reasonable standards for entry. I don't expect someone to know the full lore but I expect you won't inject garbage into a hobby
It's kinda wild to me the staying power that gmod has had. I remember it from the HL2 days as a Machinima tool (remember those?) and...somehow it became a game in its own right? And now it's being flooded by children a decade younger than the game itself. I never thought it would go like this.

I feel like the internet as a whole has become whatever Nextbots have, Gmod is a good microcosm of how everything tends to get diluted by popularity in a way I can't acutely describe, but it's always somehow worse than the culture before it when it was maybe still popular, but still ran by passionate people in smaller communities. It feels like gentrification.
I'm surprised you didn't bring up the innovating Gargitron and Teriminus - legitimately good Nextbots. They're definitely worthy of mention, especially in comparison to the waves of lazy nextbots.
Honestly, they're a huge breath of fresh air after all the "who can kill the player the fastest" nextbots

@Ryo Kiritani might be a little late, but it adds extra sounds to the chase, and when it enters rage, it makes the sound other than that it isn't really loud well except for when it suddenly enters rage mode because you escaped it 3 times..

Vids like this remind me that Gmod belongs to a new generation now, and even that generation I saw take the reins as I was finishing High School in like 2013 are now having to do the same thing for the one after it.
I remember when the gmpublisher link started getting banned and it was virtually impossible to upload with it because any addon made with it would automatically have the link in the description by default. Luckily I've since switched to crowbar and it's way more convenient IMO
I think the issue is they've become so popular as "oooh scary thing chase you make noise" when that's basically distilling horror down to its most obvious elements. It's the gamemode equivalent to those "horror" movies that are just constant jumpscares with no real effort.
And yeah it's gatekeeping, but not all gatekeeping is bad.

me and my freinds like to do npc wars, and we like cool npcs that arnt just combine reskins to play around with. the spooky png nextbot trend is so annoying because they are everywhere in the npc tab of the workshop.
I don't think they're getting angry at the Nextbots (The Program), they're getting angry at the PNGs nextbots (the image + sound attached to said program) constantly flooding the workshop and the internet as a whole, it's just repetitive. Some even try to renovate it by making it behaves a bit differently, but ultimately, it all ends up the same.
They should make separate categories for Nextbots separating simple "Sanic based PNG bots" from more advanced scripted Nextbots (like Gargitron, Terminus, Eyes, DrGBase Nextbots, etc) to make it easier to find unique Nextbots. The Sanic-based Nextbot code isn't technically bad, but it's cliche and overused, mostly by people who can't lua code very well. Improvements to make the chase feel more realistic, like hunting, attack on sight, reaction to nearby sounds, and random voice lines would make the Sanic lua code better.
My dislike for most Nextbots is due to dumb meme images being used like "nightmare material" and there's tons of them. They just aren't scary to me and make no sense. But I understand that some people don't know enough lua (or don't have enough free time) to learn how to code a more advanced Nextbot so they just copy-paste mostly Sanic-based Nextbots. Another reason being that they are only in it for the fun chase and don't feel the need to learn how to lua code to achieve this.
Despite this, I wish that there were more unique Nextbots on the workshop, and they are increasingly harder to find with the sheer amounts of copy-pasted meme bots being posted on a daily basis, which increases the need for separate Nextbot categories. I've been trying to find some DrGBase Nextbots with some behaviors I want to use as examples to upgrade my own Nextbots to make up for my lack of coding knowledge, with little luck as the results are drowned out by more simple Nextbots.
This is slender tier horror. But we were all kids one time or another in games, and as a child our imagination is immensely active. Let the kids enjoy the liminal space trend. Gmod won't go anywhere, it's moved through these trends thousands of times. No death rattle or loss of identity. It's legacy will always be secured.
I do have the occasional "PNG Chaser" but my favorite actual nextbot is the Xenomorph nextbot. Ever played Alien: Isolation? Think of that very Alien, vents and hiding in lockers, and that thing will hunt you down and kill you but don't think you can fool it twice.. It's honestly fun to run and hide! I love how people have made it work with crazy AI bots. Even someone made some Halo NPC's that work just like in the original game, full of animations and everything. It's actually really cool playing with them once you find some of the good ones.
