    Patara, please explain why you need to use baking soda with buttermilk....? 🤔

    • @appalachiashomesteadwithpatara
      @appalachiashomesteadwithpatara  หลายเดือนก่อน +119

      The acidity of the buttermilk reacts with the baking soda to help them rise as they're baking in the oven.

    Gotta laugh this morning. Ended up with a "throw away" puppy at the beginning of the summer. Looks to be a pit mix. Son picked her up off the side of the road laying in a ditch. At this point she is about 4-5 months old. She is crate trained and into everything - as expected. When I leave the house I have a large "metal" crate that I put her in so the house isn't destroyed when I come home. It's one of those that you have to pull up on the door to release it to open. First few times I used it was good. Then she learned how to push the door up with her nose to get out.... Added a hook latch to the top... Did good for a few times. Came home from the store a few minutes ago and was greeted at the door by a smiling happy dog.... That had cleaned off two small tables, pulled the blankets off the bed, and my boot shoe laces in pieces (boots are fine). She learned that she could push it up slightly and then wiggle out the bottom of the door. She is a tall lanky thing that is around 30 pounds. Need less to say... She is now in crate jail with 4 separate metal close hooks down the door and on the top. (Had tried to use string to tie it together -she chewed through that real fast.) A lot of folks would say get rid of her because of her escape abilities - me .. I'm happy I have an intelligent pup- she learns fast and is stubborn and the puppy stuff she will grow out of ....

      I have a pittie, she is an escape artist, she can get out of about everything I tried when she was a pup to keep her in( my goodness the messes😂😂) I so wished I had, had a hidden camera because some things she did are still a mystery( as to how) this day.

    • @hearthecrysofthecrusaders3357
      @hearthecrysofthecrusaders3357 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ohh and she is grown, loyal, and well behaved( as long as she is included) when she was about two thu( fair warning) to this day I believe someone may have tried to get in the house, she was nervous as heck when I got home from work, and she had shredded the arms of both my couch and loveseat. Never had done any chewing on anything before, nor did she after, so I think something ( or someone) got to her that day.

    P.S. My grandmamá had a few of those (like a sheath for her knives). 😮 And when it was ripping apart (because they were old), she would pull out special thread and kick on her sewing machine and tread along the path. I had the task in putting the thread in that hole or eye in the sewing machine.
    😂😂😂
    Oh wow !!! You threw me back to over 50 years ago, Patara. 😂

    Morning Patara, always love your baking videos. My Mom passed at the age of 54 , 31 years ago and she was in my books, the ultimate cook and baker. I remember being in the kitchen with ingredients all laid out, the mess and the wonderful smells but at the time I just didn't think to ask her can you put that in cups and tbsp measurements. LOL.. I received her cookbook and my grandmas too, after my father remarried but the notes how she changed up the recipes and the recipes she acquired from other relatives and her friends were all missing.. if anyone reads this comment I hope they take notes and can rescue their Mom's cook books and notes before it's too late. Love you all. ♥️🙏

    Biscuits are so easy and so good!! Yes, it's messy. But, over time you will learn to make less of a mess just by doing it. I use my mom's cast iron gridle that she left me that we ate pancakes on when I was a kid. The gridle came from her mother. I just use a regular mouth mason jar ring to cut them. One thing that I learned years ago when I started making biscuits is the kneading and actually the use of your hands to incorporate the butter into the flour is very theraputic for me. With this gridle there is always one left over that doesn't fit on the round gridle.It's kind of the "ugly biscuit" because it's from the leftover dough. I save all the ugly biscuits in a ziploc in the freezer uncooked. At the end of the week or sometimes two...it's ugly biscuit day and I don't have to do any work. LOVE those days. Just remember some days you'll use a cup of buttermilk, sometimes more, sometimes less. I think it depends on the humidity percentage when you're making them. That's the only thing I can think of for why it differs sometimes. Just go with it. Learn by doing. And what a great reward for doing!! Great video!! Showing just how easy it is!!!

    I've tried to teach hubby how to make them and his are like Hockey Pucks. But I do my best to be kind to him and thank him for making them. (He always makes them for breakfast with local honey) I love making them with butter on top (after they come out of the oven) Everyone loves them like that in my family. Thanks for the tips Patara. God Bless and Hugs!

    Hi Patara, I just wanted to say that I had so much fun watching your biscuit making video last night! You did such a great job of showing all of the different ingredients, cooking tools, and yourself talking. A video like this and all of your other videos aren't easy to make. They require a lot of editing and bunch of behind the scenes work. I'm a dude but looking at increasing my cooking skills so that I can cook for a new girlfriend who will hopefully come along soon! Thank you! 😁

    In Australia 🇦🇺 we have scones, I don't have cast iron cookware but I love watching them made. I watch Ms Brenda Gannt for cooking but some too Southern for me y'all😂. I'm a mature 71 and learning heaps from you and your followers. So far I can only do the 5 cans and a few extras when I can. Thank you and God bless 🙏💜🇦🇺💜🙏

    I love your style, I don't mess with exact anything, just make it work. I use my grandmother's measuring method, about that much in the palm of your hand :) Thank you got the video!

    Thank you, made these bisquits and they came out perfect. I used a glass to cut out my bisquits so It wasn't as large as your cutter. Since my bisquits were smaller, I was able to make 11 of them. So yummy.

    My mom used to cook didn't measure anything. She just threw it in there and it came out great, My mom wasn't the Baker. It was my aunt Peggy, that was the Baker the best.
