  • Dirt is a common craving in many parts of Africa - especially amongst pregnant women who need the nutrients contained within the soil. In Tanzania the special clay soil is known as "udongo wa pemba", Swahili for "The Soil of Pemba". Focus on Africa's Tulanana Bohela travelled specially to the hills of Morogoro to find out what dirt really tastes like...but her journey begins in a famous market in Dar Es Salaam.

I was addicted to red dirt during my pregnancy. I cannot help it. I was told by my Obstetrician that it was due to an iron deficiency. I was severely anemic. So, if you crave for ice, dirt or cornstarch during your pregnancy let your obgyn know you might be anemic. I must say the dirt did taste good!!

In America we call it Pica. I'm pregnant and crave dirt, chalk and clay. Ive been taking iron pills and its helped curve the cravings, but many people with this condition pay $10-$30 a pound plus shipping to buy "edible" clays, dirt, limestone, ect. Look up the vedio's on here!

Eating soil in Tanzania is just like how people here in the US have granola bars as snacks. I was born in that place where the soil is made ‘Morogoro’ and lived almost 10 years in the place that was first shown ‘Dar es Salaam’. It is where the big super duper soil market is and I can say people especially women eat soil as a snack in a day to day basis. One would actually crave for it until she gets it. Myself I used to be one of the soil eaters! Used to dig the hell out of ants hills until there were non left!

it may be rich in iron that women are unknowingly lacking....the body will crave what it needs....there is red dirt in the south in Mississippi I think...I heard that some people still eat it today.......but that is alot of work....she needs to raise her prices....maybe $1 or $2 per roll of clay.... she needs to sell it herself....3000 rolls of clay a day for $10?....women there work so hard

This phenomenon is actually quite interesting. It's an example of the psychological disorder of pica. It is characterized as a craving for non-nutritional substances, like dirt, clay, rocks hair, ice or other nutritionless substances. There are some theories as to the cause of pica, but the most common is with people suffering from anemia (a too low amount of red blood cells, likely caused by an iron deficiency). This causes a person to crave substances like dirt or rocks, in an attempt to gain some of the minerals necessary to produce the hemoglobin in red blood cells. More specifically if it's a craving for dirt or soil its geophagia (like in the video), a craving for stones is lithophagia and for metal it's metallophagia.

I recall seeing a video about dirt cookies being sold in Haiti. It's sad that such dirt cookies are seen as a last resort, and yet in Tanzania people buy something similar to fulfil a craving!

My mum is from Buckhead Georgia and she talked about eating red clay, she said they would dig down and obtain the Clay put it in a pan and then bake it for a long time, she said it was mouthwatering, back then she didn’t know that she had an iron deficiency and developed pica.
