One idea I think is fairly interesting is, once you get to the point of gene-editing of course, cross-breeding the genelines together and then using gene-editing to give those hybrid children the traits that they missed out on for being hybrids. I have a dirtmole/basliner hybrid child in my colony now and he's lost about everything except for the darkvision trait from his father's side. Just need to bank enough genes from his father to make the transplant.
I love how ambiguous is such a considerate streamer for people that aren’t Americans in regards to the seasons and temperatures and little stuff like that
If you hover over the skills when they are sitting at the school desks, you can see the kids get rather quick improvement on whatever subject it is they are teaching. Same for when the kids follow an adult around watching what they are doing. the kid will get points in whatever the person they are following is working with. I just noticed because I was watching a kid and an adult at a schooldesk, and then suddenly the "animals level4" popped up above the kid. So they are slower than adults in most tasks, but also they are kids- they need their rec time. Technically, Americans use both the imperial and the metric system. We also use Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin. It's just that we use certain systems/temps for specific things. Like, Imperial for cooking, metric for science. F for body and weather, C for water, K for super hot stuff. We are taught all the of them in school, but most of us forget unless we work in an applicable career.
The one thing that rimworld lacks that I think would be a no-brainer in a survival situation are crops that are grown specifically as famine foods and can be harvested as a root in the winter. Daylillies, Sunchokes... Tynan probably just didn't think of it. Another RL example of something that can be winter harvested are carrots. Carrots are biennial, so you can sow in spring, then by fall you can eat them, but you can also harvest them in the middle of January as long as you can crack the stiff frozen ground, or if it is warm enough. You can't do this (very well) with potatoes. Rice is a no. Corn is no. Berries are pretty much mostly no, but there is always that one dried up old rotty raisin-looking berry that clings on until february. If you guys like this game and are concerned about your future, you can plant a garden for cheap. And yeah... you'll have problems like pests, fertility issues.. etc... but if you look at what your neighbors grow, you can get an idea maybe. Pretty much anyone can grow tomatoes badly, for example, but there is a lot of advancement and flexibility with them and even if you are a n00b at tomatoes, you can get a rewarding harvest. In fact, one of the problems with tomatoes is people growing too many and having too many fruits to know what to do with.
I love this entire comment and it's made me think about my (IRL) garden planning for next year! But as someone who has been growing tomatoes for 5+ years, my advice to anyone who is growing them and has too many is - get all your most suspect fruits and throw out everything that's totally rotten. If you have fruits with only a little patch looking bad, just cut that off and keep the rest. Then cut the good tomatoes into quarters, and the remains from above into close enough size pieces. No need to be very exact! Lightly oil a baking tray with basic olive oil (it tastes better imo but any oil will work except extra virgin olive oil because that burns at too low a temp and can't be used for cooking because of that) And just lay out your tomatoes. Add pepper and dried herbs to taste and stick it in your oven on gas 5 until it looks roasted and smells great! I forgot why I started writing this but I hope it helped someone lol
I don't know if anyone has told you yet because I just paused the video to write this comment: You can still add more people via Character Editor. There may be several ways to do it, but the way I do it is: Make the desired character template. Save it. Start the game and then click on Character in the bottom right. There's a little icon below the character's portrait in the editor that looks like a circle with an arrow pointing up in it. If you click on that, it allows you to clone that character. Then just count out how many times you add them until you get the number you desire.
Hey Mr. Amphibian, I challenge you to a start I like to call "A Fish Outta Water". Do a naked brutality start with a Sanguophage in the middle of an extreme desert. I recommend changing the world generation to what I think of as more realistic settings, with rainfall and population as low as possible, and temperature and pollution as high as possible. Makes basically the entire world into an extreme desert, which just feels more like a rim world to me. Anyways, hope that gives you something to think about, and look forward to seeing more of biotech, god this is such a good DLC.
I just had an idea for a biotech challenge as I am binge-reading wikipedia articles while watching Rimworld. Challenge is called "DECREE 770". You start with only two colonists and create a new and large population of 1000 colonists in a very short time using the growth vat.
Cold maps are killers, but I've grown to like them. once a couple climate adjustors get deployed nothing rots. My last colony had summer temperatures of -5C and winter temps could bottom out at -57C.
They are only good when you ration your meat properly and speed run hydroponics it’s easy to remain a small group and just hunt a sloth or bear for food but getttinf more mouths to feed can make you struggle

As a Meteorologist, Fahrenheit works BETTER for temperature description to people and for cooking, whereas for anything semi scientific Celsius is better, and Kelvin for anything involving the heat of planetary cores and shit... I know this is a bit late, I don't know if you look at every comment but I would recommend the 7X7 tile format. make your rooms 7X7 so that you have a 5X5 square to use. The biggest thing I see that Rimworld players do is have rooms that are mega large they seem unrealistic imo
Not sure if theres a better way but I know one way to create 100 pawns is to use character editor and make use of the save/load pawn from slot, save one or however many different characters you want then repeatedly load them in game Pretty tedious but it works
If you go into the info tab (the little i on colonists) you can see their carrying capacity and if you mouse over it you can see what's affecting it. Body size and loss of upper body appendages will affect it. Also info tab on animals will tell you their minimum comfortable temperature as well as their output for resources and how much meat they give

My colony right now is a pain virtue tunneler cult, they eat mushrooms from the deep so the desert biome becomes a lot different, I have this helms deep of doom set up with hay grass and sagauro cacti fields outside of the walls, with a three wide entry hall for a choke point outside to prevent my cave system from being inadvertently turning into an oven. I have a three year old running around called daimos, during the breaks it's been enjoyable to watch you work against the opposite climate
