Her parents felt ashamed of her actions to clarify that she was clearly at fault. OP's family is just messed up and obsessed with family peace. I'm pretty sure if you rearrange the characters in different places, I'm sure they will be fine with it. For example, if the scenario were to be the same but have mom replaced Kim, Dad replaced with OP and Dad's brother replaced Ron. I'm sure they would be that fine with it. Dad will be like "bro, you can have my fiance and I will support both of you". Mom be like, "ah, that's nice that you understand my feelings. Please excuse me as I'm going to marry your brother." Talk about a weird outcome with these folks. Another theory is that the parents wanted OP to come back to have a chance to be with Kim if the brother didn't make it and make amends with OP. Even if they didn't want to confess to the OP about it, they hope everything will fall in place by saying "your nephew needs you". With that statement, if brother didn't make it but Kim made it, OP is the solution to have a deep bond with the nephew and bridge the relationship between OP and Kim (it is common practice when a husband passed away, his widowed wife will marry his brother). This will rekindle OP's and Kim's relationship they once had. This allows OP to take the role to care for Kim and the nephew. Keeping the family peace. Then again I'm not surprised this happened in real life.
