I commonly find it difficult to understand the reactions described during the interactions between the husband and wife when she first reveals her plan. For example, when she said "He's something I'm not supposed to have", he didn't point out the utter hypocrisy of her actions. She knew it was wrong, but was planning to do it anyway. Similarly, when she said that he had to accept this, but didn't want to end their marriage, he didn't immediately point out that she would indeed be ending their marriage. And when she said that she didn't want to hurt him, clearly she didn't care if she did or not. I know I wouldn't react the way he did that's for sure.
Why let her cause him to do what he didn't really want to do, makehim intosomethinghedidn'twanttobe. That was giving her too much power over him.
