    No mention of Sgt Dominick Pilla being the first casualty of this battle ". While taking Blackburn back to base, Sergeant Dominick Pilla, assigned to one of the Humvees being pelted with heavy fire from the surrounding buildings, was killed instantly when a bullet struck his head, becoming the first American killed in the battle"

    One thing I never hear mentioned in any of these docs is that the Somalis were so effective during this fight, Operation Gothic Serpent, because Bin Laden had provided the Somalis with proximity sensors for their RPGs. So, instead of having to actually hit the Blackhawk, they just needed to get close. It made a huge difference in their effectiveness and was what led to the two birds being shot down. Idk why no one ever mentions that. Its pretty important.

    Fun fact.
    Aidids own son was part of the Marine Corps contingent that initially arrived in the area.
    That “One Injured Private” was Todd Blackburn. He somehow lost grip on the fast rope and fell.
    This operation by the way was not the reason US left.
    Also technically this was NOT a defeat for the US.

      The US was defeated though

    • @ultrajd
      @ultrajd 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@SomaIipirate technically no. If you mean by the fact that we lost a number of servicemen on that mission then by that logic, the Normandy Beach landings were a greatest defeat in military history. They went in. They got the people they were after and they got the prisoners back to base. yes they took casualties. Yes, things didn’t go the way they wanted. But in the overall mission of that day or days, I guess you could say the overall objective was.
      Also, you have to remember that the US wasn’t even there really for anything like what a lot of people may think. The United States was there predominantly to provide security for the United Nations and Red Cross organizations.
      The reason the US left was not because of this event. The US left because DC lost the stomach. Which is actually kind of hilarious when you consider the fact that the whole operation was being undertaken by the orders of Washington DC because they were growing impatient. Not only that, but during the operation they originally wanted to have some light armored vehicles come with them as well as the potential for a, specter gunship overhead. But again Washington DC in all of its wisdom said that this would have made the operation “too high profile”
      Which is why the overhead cover was undertaken with the Blackhawks and little birds.

      “Limited forces” you mean 25,000 soldiers. 24 total killed. 70 total wounded. The US was there to grab and extract a war lord, stop the Somalis from blowing up and shooting their own people, distributing food/water etc. America is a world super power and conducts itself that way.
