Uli Schmidt - The Maverick in the Pack

- Uli Schmidt was arguably the greatest hooker to ever represent South Africa. He broke the typical mold and was a mobile player who often acted as an extra loose forward. He could run like a centre and was exceptionally strong for his size. He scored 74 first class tries, which is uncanny for a hooker. This is a celebration of a true Springbok legend. Thanks for watching!
I met Uli Schmidt in 2003 and had about a 2 min chat with him. It was during the down run of the Comrades Marathon. I had just passed Camperdown and I could hear a ' bus' coming up from behind me with about 20 -30 runners in it. As the group overtook me I looked to my right and saw the most muscular and powerfully built runner I have ever seen slowly pass me. I recognized him immediately as I am a big rugby suppoter and avid fan of the Blue Bulls, for whom he played many years. He was , together with Naas Botha my two rugby heroes. I sped up a bit and joined the bus. I had heard that Uli was a Comrades runner and had multiple Comrades under his belt. I think he was driving the 'running bus'. After 5 minutes I had plucked up enough courage to have a quick chat with my rugby hero. He was gracious and friendly and after a few minutes of chatting I wished him well for the rest of the race. I could not keep up the pace of the bus so I slowed down and they disappeared into the multitude ahead. I checked the results the following day and he did finish once again. True legend in his own time.
Uli was always gracious. Especially if you bought him a Klip & Coke.
Uli, what a legend :)
Het dit al gekyk, maar het nostalgies gevoel vannaand.
Thanks, thoroughly enjoyed it, he was one of my favourites.
No hooker in history could do what he could in the loose. He could do what any hooker in history could do.The greatest and most unsung hero in world rugby!
Steven Davidson We tend to agree with you Steven!
@@RealRugby then there is schalk brits
@@carldanelaubscher1489 fair enough, very similar player and a legend in his own right
@@carldanelaubscher1489 I grew up watching Olie and honestly he was probably the best hooker South Africa ever had.
Its funng cause his also best doctor i have ever had aswell!!
Uli incredible 💪👍🏻
My hero lief jou uli
Beste haker in SA rugby.
We calledhim ULI BULLY😊
He also got sent off for telling referee Freek Burger to F off (the way Burger took offense was hilarious) after the referee had the temerity to award a penalty for Transvaal for him punching a young Francois Pienaar in the face. Ah Uli. What a legend.
I remember that. Burger's response was "Niemand sê vir my F off op die veld nie!"
@@RealRugby hahaha net so 😂
Best scrum inspector ever very good wing
He could do no wrong, had a gift for turning up at the right moment, always on the wing.
Without a doubt, the best hooker the world has ever seen. I doubt we will ever see another hooker with this much speed, skill, strength and understanding of the game.
If Uli was the maverick, then Michael de Plessis was the wildcard!
yes the greast .......dan coles is near
All this praise for Uli, but for me he'll always be that guy that ended Tony Watson’s career with that sickening challenge. And from a medical doctor too!
Yep that was a sad and unfortunate end to a promising player who I thought was within reach of claiming a Bok jersey.
@@willemkotze2611 agreed, Tony Watson was a huge up and coming wing at the time. Uli will always be remembered for that hit
Karma caught Watson for his sadism in beating young boys at Maritzburg college
What goes round comes around
Uli was the best but yes what he did to Tony was bad. Don't know why he did it.
Real Rugby❤
Why didn’t he play in ‘95?
He injured his neck in preseason and had to retire
Real Rugby - bugger. How unlucky could a man be.
uli boelie!
Early on in this video the commentator says it was picked up by Louis Schmidt. Lol Don't think Louis and Uli ever played together.😉😉😂 Simple mistake but funny.😂😂😂
Uli's second name is Louis...
Uli the Boelie 😁
Saw this bulls teams many times at loftus this was rugby not the rubbish of today
The ubiquitous Uli Schmidt - the commentator missed 99% of SA with that one!
DR ULI❤😂
Could anybody see any black player or fan during the whole vid?
Not sure if that is what people are looking for in the video. I think most people are here for the rugby
@@RealRugby me too man, but it is really impressive when you notice that.
I am a person of colour I lived through apartheid south African rugby had some talented players black & white not all white people stood with the old regime
Never forget he ended Tony Watson’s career with a cowardly knee to the face … but was never penalised.
Be very careful of those that you elevate to ‘god-like’ status.
🤔
Who elevated him to god-like status???
