Andre Joubert - The Rolls Royce of Full Backs

  • There is a reason Andre Joubert was referred to as the Rolls Royce of full backs, he was just in a class of his own. Safe as a rock under the high ball, a highly educated left boot and the ability to join an attacking line made him one of the premier fullback in the early to mid 90's.
He scored some glorious tries and here are some of his best.
    Enjoy and thanks for watching!

In NZ we loved this guy apart from when he played our sides. He was incredibly dangerous and you always felt he could pull a rabbit out of the hat at any time. But a pure joy to watch.

What a player. We were lucky to have our own ace in Cullen but huge amount of respect for Joubert in NZ. One of the most sublimely talented players I’ve ever seen.

Joubaaaaa! How many fans just loved to emit that primal scream. The most gifted full back of all time. Always seemed to be in the right place. He could smoke most wingers at a canter.

Always a complete gentleman on the field. Cleanest of players.
Always struck me as an introvert, but a marvellous fullback .
    Very very quick..deceptively fast.

Yes, I got a sense by the time he played us regularly in the 90's he wasn't quite as quick as he had been, which is pretty scary, as he could still go at a fair clip. He was just a master of his craft, cunning, deceptive, skillful as all hell.

Surely the best fullback of all time. What made him dangerous was his ability to kick brilliantly with both left or right. I've seen a few comments about calling André Joubert the "Rolce Royce of Full backs", that's the nickname he's had for almost his whole rugby playing career. It's sort of a tradition in South Africa to give a player a nickname.

Cullen was selected for the All Blacks in 1996, the year before Joubert retired from international rugby. He retired from all rugby in 1999. Joubert is 12 years older than Cullen. There wasn't much overlap in their careers although I'd probably, and I'm South African, pick Cullen first. It's not easily done considering their difference in playing styles and selection would likely be decided on factors like opposition, game plan and importance of match.

I read Cullen saying "Andre Joubert ... I always look up to him" in the booklet of 1998 try-nations match at Wellington. I'm quite sure Cullen, surely one of the greatest, never disagrees to lauding Joubert as 'Rolls Royce of fullbacks'.

@@ivanmynhardt I'm South African boet and I've watched a lot of rugby in my time. Ultimately, it comes down to opinion, that's all. I can't prove Cullen was better, but that is my opinion. You also cannot prove that Jouba was better, how do you do that? Don't get me wrong, I love Jouba and he was a fantastic player, but personally I feel Cullen was the complete package. I know my rugby, and I know my rugby players. Just because I have a different opinion doesn't mean I don't know anything about a specific player

    • @ivanmynhardt

Look Cullen was flippen amazing. Both players had xfactor. But my God if you look at the Allblack team back then it would be a lot easier to play the game and score the tries that Cullen did. Unfortunately SA coming out of isolation when Andre was alot older but its opinion and suppose it goes to preference, but thanks for the reply. Go Bokke😉

Is a fullbacks job not to defend the back as well? We only see this man on the attack here. There is no mention of his performance under the high ball. He was shit scared. Being a coach against him must have been a pleasure because you knew that if you gave him a high ball close to his try line he would most likely have dropped it.

I can still remember one time against the Sharks in super rugby. ....Cullen played for Hurricanes..he tried to cut in between the forwards at full speed. Then the flank of Sharks Van Heerden put him down with a low front on tackle.....that was a sight to see. Cullen straight on his back. They had to carry him of the field...his run was out...lol
