- Growing up as a passionate Blue Bulls supporter, there was only ever one right wing that mattered, Deon Oosthuysen. Hindsight and the wisdom that comes with age have since put this into perspective. There were fantastic wings playing provincial rugby in South Africa in the later 80s and early 90s. On the right wing, most notably James Small and also Chris Badenhorst from the Freestate. Oosthuysen didn't have the size of someone like Small, but he made up for it with electric pace, which made him very elusive. He could out sprint most opponents and he was a deadly finisher.
Deon Oosthuysen played for Western Transvaal and Northern Transvaal (Blue Bulls) at provincial level. He was known for having a lot of pace and scored 85 tries in his first-class career, which was a record for any Northern Transvaal/Blue Bulls player.
In addition to playing in 12 tour matches for South Africa, he was also an accomplished sevens player and was for a while coach of the South African sevens team in the late 1990s.
He really was a joy to watch in his prime and I hope you enjoy this video.
Thanks for watching!
All time favourite
Deon Oosthuysen is n legend, As kind my hero. Johan Heunis was een van die land se mees "underrated" spelers
I watched most of the games that Deon played. He was just so much faster than any of his opponents. It's a shame that he wasn't given more chances in the Springbok jersey. Anyway, thank you for a wonderful video. It brings back so many memories of a time when rugby was still fluent and exciting. Now it's just box kicks and big forwards in the backline, walking into tackles....
Also very strong muscular guy
My rugby coach. Had such a huge impact on and off the field. Just a pure love for the game, and an incredible athlete. Amazing player, coach and human being.
The way the good Lord intended rugby to be played...Stands packed to the brim, a leather ball and wingers scoring tries.
Een van die heel bestes. Goeie herinneringe
One of my favourites with Jaques Olivier.
Absolute legend for the Bulls. Loved watching him play for N.Tvl as a youngster. Was a shame he never earned a bok cap as he played very well for the midweek team on the Springbok tour.
As a young laaitie, I couldn't understand why they picked James Small ahead of him. He was awesome for Northerns...
@@RealRugby I agree. Deon was our best wing. A pity they didn't give him more chances in a Springbok jersey.
Was een van my gunstelling vleuls as kind.
So absolutely bizarre to find out he never got capped for the books.
Unbelievable
Best Northern Transvaal had.
Ek het nie geweet nie( was bietjie jonk toe) dat Deon en Robert vir wes transvaal gepeel het nie.
Pieter Hendricks se grootste nagmerrie
Fark he was quick
Naas Botha het in die 7 Curriebeker-eindstryde wat hy gewen het(1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1987, 1988 en 1991), altesaam 100 punte aangeteken. 'n Ware held van Noord-Transvaal 🩵.
Pieter hendriks soek nog steeds water kant deon is verby hom
He was very fast, however, Tony Watson of Natal smoked him a couple of times real good. You don't believe me? Check out Watson's tribute on this very you tube.

Het kringe om Bok vleuls gehardloop.
