    Children are always fun to take pictures of. They are like small and honest adults. I think it's important to be respectful when shooting strangers (of any age) and since kids seem to be a sensitive topic for some of the audience watching these videos, why not show you my approach? So, in this roll I wanted to take mostly pictures of kids (10 out of 12 shots). I hope you enjoy it.

      EduardoPavezGoye The kid just asked what all the adults failed to. Always ask man!

      It is a sensitive topic. I like shooting kids in the sense that a running kid against our relatively grid-like architecture always forms a beautiful moment of joy. I had a great childhood and these moments remind me of the most carefree time in my life. Unfortunately, the exception that is the weirdo with bad intentions gives the rest of us a tough time because people have become suspicious. I've often seen a frame that looked good to my mind and then just didn't shoot because the parents were looking at me in a funny way. You've done a gorgeous job in a very respectful manner here so plenty of respect and admiration headed your way:)

    This particular combination of lens and film is outstanding. I'm really impressed with the look of Ektachrome in this camera. This combination is a winner: excellent contrast, vibrant color. You're doing a good job of scanning, as well. I've never seen a camera that shifts the film plane instead of the lens. Very interesting and beautiful camera... looks like it was build to last, too.

    I thought that I had gotten over wanting one of these (or other comparable folding camera) but now I want one more than ever. I was deliberating for ages over the Mamiya Six, Zeiss Super Ikonta, Iskra and the Certo 6 but then I bought a Leica M2. Might have to try selling some of my less used equipment and look out for a good deal on a folder.
    Also I had no idea that the Mamiya could shoot in 645 format. I'm impressed by the thought that went into the design, it really is a nifty little camera.

    My Mamiya Six Automat is probably my favorite medium format camera. I used it just last weekend at a party with some flashbulbs and it was a lot of fun.
    I recommend traveling with a Holga (of the glass lens variety). Some of my favorite vacation photos were taken with one.

    Apart from the focusing and the dual format this is nearly identical to the Super Ikonta III (front cell focusing), Mamiya took the strut system directly from the Ikonta line of cameras (already prewar, therefore patents lost). Nice vid, great folder!

    Looks like a pretty nice camera I must say! I was looking into getting a 6x9/6x6 folder, as Im lazy to carry around my Yashica TLR when I travel and I really like this Mamiya. Lens seems good enough and prices on ebay seem reasonable.

    I bought one of these on eBay, from Japan -- arrived a few days ago. It's an older version from yours -- I'm not sure how it changes viewfinder format (but it seems to), the pressure plate slides out for loading, instead of hinging, and the red windows have separate sliders (one is always locked) with a separate format indicator on the back. As you said, many versions. It's a joy to use, though -- easier to load than any medium format camera I've owned (and I've been shooting medium format since my mom's Duaflex II in the 1960s), easy to focus, nice range of exposure -- and the B and 1, 2, 5, 10 settings work right on my shutter. I've got the Sekor T lens (made by Mamiya -- there were Olympus-made Zuiko D and also Kantar in this style camera).
    I've got a Super Ikonta B 532/16 that I've had for years -- this camera is much lighter and easier to use. Wish it had strap lugs, though. I might have to either install a pair, or find/make a half-case to fit it.

    I just picked one of these up off eBay and am looking forwards to getting back my first roll of Provia from the lab. It's exactly as fun as you say! Unfortunately my copy seems to have some haze on the internal element, I bet it wouldn't be hard to take it apart though and give it a wash in some Hydrogen Peroxide though. We'll see if it's even significant enough to worry about.

    My first foldable camera is a Carl Zeiss ikon Nettar Anastigmat 10.5mm, which is a simple camera and it’s way to simple and I went for a Voigtlander bessa II skopar. I like both of them, they are great, especially Zeiss one was being very cheap.

    Great understandable video, you're hitting the majors when presenting the camera, you're a good street photographer too. So keep on doing these videos. I would recommend checking out a Zeiss Super Ikonta 533/15 or 532/15, they've got a 2.8 tessar lens, the 533 with a light meter. It's german craftsmanship at it's best when it comes to folders..

    There were at least six distinct version of this camera from the late 1940s to its end around 1959. My experience is that the 645 option format shown here is fairly rare. The later models, Automats, with automatic shutter cocking with film advance are more convenient. Most mount a Sekor lens by Mamiya, however some use lenses made by Olympus. I've always had a prejudice in favor of the Olympus lensed versions, but my remaining version is a Sekor and it does nicely. Earlier models have film backs which must be removed each time film is loaded. The later models use the hinged back shown here, an advantage in keeping it from damage or loss. One feature not mentioned is the this camera weighs far more than you'd expect, even more than the Zeiss Ikonta of similar type I think.

  • @MisterBo88
    @MisterBo88 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Grate video and explanation! I'm struggling to find a 6 in good conditions. I've seen the lenses you can find it with are the Olympus, the Sekor S or the Kominar. Do someone know if there is a lot of difference between them?

  • @borderlands6606
    @borderlands6606 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Folders are great, I'm surprised they aren't more popular. They require a certain formality, roll the paper backing, cock the shutter, focus (scale in my case), but it quickly becomes second nature. For zone focusing they can be pretty fast and best of all they fit in a pocket.

  • @aussiecryptomaniac
    @aussiecryptomaniac 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the Mamiya-6 IVb the version which can switch 6x6 to 645 similar to yours, but as you say the lens isn't as good for landscapes. However, after over a year of searching I finally found a (New Old Stock) Konishiroku Pearl IV *1958 which is probably the last, and best 120 folder made in the mechanical era. Picture the Fuji GS 645S but all metal and you have an idea, and the Hexar 75mm f3.5 lens is razor-sharp. All this in a tiny package as it is one of the smallest 645 folder ever made, just a fraction larger than a Voigtlander Perkeo, or Balda Super Baldax.

    • @aussiecryptomaniac
      @aussiecryptomaniac 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Automat mechanism is prone to failure which is why I bought a IVb with the 6x6 or 645 option, 16 shots a roll is a big difference and I crop to 4x4 for Super-Slides anyway

    • @thnikkamax
      @thnikkamax 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheyenne Morrison funny you say this because I ended up getting a 6x4.5 version due to this video, and it did not last, it ended up failing. 2 years later and I’m still firing away on the Automat. Mine is actually the Automat 2 and did have noticeably better sharpness on the Sekor lens vs the Zuiko. Maybe the mechanism is stronger too, though most of the failures are definitely user error if you try to adjust the speed after cocking the shutter. Ultimately all old cameras are susceptible to random failure, anyway. For my 6x4.5 fix I now use a 3D printed camera with RB67 backs.

    • @aussiecryptomaniac
      @aussiecryptomaniac 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thnikkamax Always an exception to the rule, but automated mechanisms are prone to failure, which red windows aren't. Of course, all old cameras need TLC and have sample variation. Interesting to hear you prefer the Sekor to the Zuiko.

    What would you suggest as an entry level camera in medium format?

      Depends on what you like shooting, what kind of camera you prefer, how automatic or manual etc etc. "Medium format" is just the size of the negative, not a kind of camera. I like this camera a lot, but that's because of what I shoot and how I do it.

    How to set the iso? Great video, very helpful.

      Gary, these cameras don’t have a light meter. It might have a weal to set a ISO number but just as a reminder of what ISO film you are shooting, but you have to use an external light meter if you want to dial down your exposure, or you can use the sunny 16 rule as well.

    Are these lenses interchangeable? I believe the lens is threaded on correct?

      Don Beeler you can't change lenses on a folder. I mean, TECHNICALLY you can, but you need to modify the camera and such.
