- Welcome to another episode where I take on the nightmare of fixing holes in the gutters of a historic industrial building. These holes were doing a number on my brickwork, and something had to be done before the whole place crumbled.
Armed with a bucket truck that took me higher than my comfort zone allowed and a bucket of black tar that seemed to stick to everything except the gutter, I embarked on this misadventure. Spoiler alert: heights are still terrifying, and tar is still the worst substance known to man.
Watch as I wrestle with tools, balance precariously, and try not to panic while fixing these gutters. It’s a thrilling tale of me vs. gravity, with a generous helping of sticky tar just to keep things interesting. Despite all the chaos and a few too many close calls, we managed to get the gutters patched up and save the brickwork from further damage.JUST KIDDING! Bob did the work and saved the day. Everybody needs a Bob.
Join me for a laugh (mostly at my expense) and see how even the most daunting tasks can be tackled with a bit of Bob and determination, a lot of sweat, and a healthy dose of humor. If nothing else, you'll feel better about your own DIY projects.
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoy watching someone else handle the heights and sticky situations!

Many people have reached out to ask if there is an Amazon wishlist where they might be able to contribute to the effort of saving this building. So after several requests I have made one. This is not a call for donations but rather a way to support the process of saving the building for people who have expressed the desire to participate and lend their support. You will see multiple links below. The first link is the entire list. I have included helpful items at all price ranges from less than 10 dollars on up to very expensive things. Everything on the list will be helpful no matter what price point. The first list includes all items from all lists. The links below that have been divided up to show just items from certain projects that people might be particularly interested in supporting. For example windows, or security etc.

Silly it isn’t manufactured with a drain hole. For the bucket tray Bob was talking about, a simple bucket with a hook big enough to hang over the lip. Protip: Do the same with an empty bucket with some knotted string/cord that can reach the ground. That way you can get stuff or materials up and down without the bucket having to be moved.
Solid advice.
Great advice. I'm a little embarrassed to admit it but after the job was finished and I opened one of the side doors on the truck there was actually a wooden tray someone had made to go on the side of the bucket oh well lesson learned. Bob
I can’t believe you’re afraid of riding in the bucket but you have no problem walking on the roof.
As long as you aren't near the edge, you aren't looking off to see how you're going to fall.
I much prefer the bucket. It made me nervous watching him on the roof Bob
the bucket shakes and lurches, the roof seems solid, and even then I feel compelled to lay on my stomach to go to the edge haha.
yeah thats right.
Chris while the weather is warm you should make an effort to rid those vines growing on the outside of the bldg... Some of those vines will pull the mortar from between the bricks... Get a battery powered sawzall or angle grinder and rip em up... If it's poison ivy use long sleeves to cover your skin..
Place is looking good...
Everybody needs a Bob 😊 great photo of Bob on the lift and the sun behind 😂
I'm pretty sure I don't deserve an aura LMAO. Bob
haha, he gets more love here than I do! and deserves it too.
Great progress, as always, Chris. Bob deserves not one, but several shout-outs for his invaluable assistance and expertise! Thanks, Bob. Keep up the good work and, as always, stay safe, my friends.
Thanks for the kind words. Bob
So Agreed.!!!! Thanks Kevin.
No way I could have ridden that bucket up! Kudos to Bob for saving the day!
Congrats on that door, Chris! I couldn't help smiling when it closed with that original hardware! Awesome!
Me too, the sound of the door closing, the squeaky slam, that door made that same sound for along time. Hopefully it new life will be long and happy.
They don't make like they used to! Bob
have to go back and listen now!
its terrifying for sure. Working door is amazing!
You need 8 ft ladder or 6 foot ladder to park next to bucket to get in and out. Or cut one of the sides and make a swinging locking door. To climb in and out of.
Bob no doubt is your angel. Just keep being a sponge and soak in everything he teaches you. The door looks great!
Thank you. Bob
thats exactly the plan!
I’m shocked no one stole the copper gutters years ago to sell for scrap.
I'm sure if it was easy to get to it be gone. Bob
yeah, it takes hours to get a single piece of conduit and ladders 12 feet up.
Gutters done 😊 they looked in good condition, not full of yuk !
yeah, they are 65 feet up so no leaves falling in them.
Door fixed 😊
Bleep "copper" out of the video or you will have a nasty surprise some morning when you come to the building.
Yeah, folks have been mentioning that, but it is 12 feet up and super hard to get down. By that I mean it's brutal getting it down and out.
Drill a drain hole In the bottom of the bucket?????
The bucket has that protruding spot, which is another step.
Scary is right, I hope you had that lift safetied 😶🌫️
there are no outriggers on it. It passed inspection so I heard.
Does anyone else think Chris should have an OnlyFans?
anything to raise money. haha.
Good job boys. Walkie Talkies might be good.
Got em, they'll be showing up in videos soon.
Had you thought of siphoning the water out with a garden hose using gravity? Maybe next time?
Hopefully there's no next time I cut a board to go over the top of it and we put the cover back on it. Bob
hi bear, yeah he capped it. but I thought maybe the last 5% wouldn't be possible to siphon. Maybe I'm wrong about that.
That's so funny I was just about to comment drill a hole in the bottom of the bucket and before I can even comment you guys already did it LOL great minds think alike?? LMAO
haha, I was sure I'd get yelled at in the comments but nobody seemed triggered by it so far.
That same mix of metals happens on outdoor copper faucets and aluminum hose connections. Metals sort of fuse together. Many an outdoor spicket has been repaired because of that. Actally just learned it last week.
wow that knowledge seems to be going around. haha. Thanks!
If you had a length of plastic pipe - long enough to go to the bottom of the water then up & over the top of the machin’s bucket and also hang below the bottom of the bucket the pipe could act as a siphon pipe - if you could create sufficient suction! It would then have saved you all the time & effort bucketing the water out one at a time!
yeah, siphoning would have got a lot of it but I wondered about the last 5%
I bet you gave Bob a heart attack popping up on the roof 😅
You know actually I don't know if you could see it in my face but he scared the crap out of me! Bob
haha, I didn't mean to.
Is Philip from extreme antique Hunters you can get a metal door strip is what they do for doors go and ask them for a door strip and that'll stop the cold air from coming in
There may even be some of that in the building come to think of it. Yeah I recognize your avatar and username.
Bucket full of water ! Who would have thought ! Yuk ! As you say before you do a job you need to do a few more before you can begin! 😊 Now watched long enough to LOL as you had to fix the bucket first !
par for the course.
you can use the red and green in conjunction to advance the cut deeper. another words use one color and cut in as far as you can go then use the other color about 3/4 inch or so and go in as far as you can go leaving a shinny strip of waste in the middle.
nice tip. That makes sense. Man I am learning so much.
Lower your sawblade so it’s only like a quarter inch above the work you’re cutting so you don’t accidentally cut yourself
darn it, somebody mentioned that like 20 vids ago, and its been broken ever since and its been so long I forgot. thanks for reminding me. And having my back!
Chris, I guess you didn’t hear me yelling at you to disengage the pto ! I was cringing listening to that high pitch whining sound as you went down the ramp.😂 Did you remember to put the cover on the bucket? Btw there should be a step on the side of the bucket that makes it easier to get in and out.
I actually put a flat board on top of the bucket and then the covers so it won't pull water.Bob
Hey airborne, I think I'm sensing a pattern. haha. Bob made a custom one for me, but I am going to start parking it inside.
Hi Chris and Bob. 👋🏻👋🏻👍👍❤
Hello back. Bob
hello friend!
❤ Chris FYI from Philip when you cut 10 you should be wearing gloves😊
That became painfully obvious to him at some point during that day. Bob
oh bob outed me. Yeah, I learned my lesson.
Chris I love your channel and have been watching from the beginning. Any chance you would get a tripod and wireless mic set up or a gimble camera? It’s kind of nauseating when you are doing close ups and swinging around. It would take your channel up a notch. You’re right Bob is an angel.
Thank you for the kind words guess we are looking at some other cameras to use I actually gave some to him that he's experimenting with and wireless mics as well. Bob
another thing on my list to work on. I can totally see that valid comment. I'll work on it. thanks for sticking with me.
Great job Bob! Keep it going!!!
Thank you Teri! and thanks for taking the time to comment!
Bring nephew over to scrape the door and paint. Oh come on Chris put your big boy pants on and say to yourself. You can do, you can do it, I know ,I can do it! How you going to teach your son to be mechanical and not be afraid of heights on ladders or scaffolding.
Lol giving you a hard time.
The funny thing is I can be in the bucket and it doesn't bother me at all but when I tried to get on that Baker scaffold and on the roof I'm not that good. Bob
oh man shame on me. haha. Okay I'll buck up.
Nice work Coming along well
Thanks so much.
You should try going about 100 feet up in a bucket then noticing there's hydraulic fluid spraying out of one of the hoses on the arm that's holding you up there. I had that happen a couple years ago while I was changing bulbs at a local high school football stadium. They say there are safety mechanisms built in that won't let you fall but I still brought that bucket down as fast as it would go. I wanted to be as low as possible before that thing ran out of fluid.
That will make the old heart race. Bob
haha, I thought that comment was going somewhere else then it took a left turn. Thank goodness it worked out for you.
The guttering being installed above the other an attempt at dealing with heavy rain fall during storms. Extra wide gutters to handle heavy overflow are much more expensive than standard 4inch gutters and the extra wide gutters requires heavier duty supports and specific equipment to make them. On a large structure 8 to 10 inch gutters are needed due the very large surface area of the roof. You could build a rain water deflection structure over the doorway to prevent degradation of the opening of the doorway due to water infiltration.
I think at some point they added a metal sloped roof on top of the flat roof and when it rained the water was overshooting the copper gutters so they added the 4 inch to dump into the copper gutters to allow for that. Bob
yes the roof Is huge. The crazy time is when the snow melts, it is an ENDLESS downpour for days.
I've worked in a bucket trucks every day for years, and every truck I've ever worked in had drain holes in it. Don't stress
We are there now. Lol Bob
Thanks so much. I thought I'd catch a lot of heck on the channel for drilling it but nobody seemed to upset about it to my surprise. You would think they would come with them installed. Bob made a custom cover for it.
Gloves safety glasses etc?
got em. Will be in videos more now.
Get cheap walkie talkies
Got em. They'll show up in the videos soon.
Well in most cases it is wise to pay someone who knows what they are doing. Lucky for you, Bob to the rescue. Good luck! Wake me when you are farther along.
Worked on lifts and bucket trucks for years as an electrician, much safer and going up on a ladder.eat a peach.
I am slowly getting better. after a few more trips up my confidence will grow.
@@coldwarmercantile I'd be scared, I hate being up on a tall ladder, and being up in that bucket truck, would not be something I would want to be doing. I'd find a braver person, to do that.
Don’t you have a pair of walky torkey????
Just got em, will be showing up in videos soon.
I've soldered on copper patches.
would that other metal promote corrosion? coming in contact with the copper?
@@coldwarmercantile
If it's copper to copper contact. No different than plumbing.
Should be something to idle the engine up when using the bucket
Yes there is. He's not really that steady in it and I'm never really in a hurry so I just let it idle. Bob
thanks for the tip. I don't know everything about how to use it all yet but I'm learning each time.
