I don't agree with all of it, but he nails their purpose. They are the guardians and heralds of the presence and throne of God Almighty. They are so awesome and terrifying that if you simply saw one you would fall down and worship it, but they only amplify the sense of awe when you realize that they serve God ceaselessly and praise him without end. I'm glad that he explained that because I've been trying to figure out what they were and why they were for a long time now.

Now that I've listened to this, I believe that even if there are literal cherubim creatures in heaven , perhaps there are various ranks, therefore the faces denote the extent of their mastery or expertise. I would imagine that a 4 faced cherub would be a creature of all-rounded mastery, and therefore of highest rank. This would explain why some have 1 face, some 2, some 4, and differing numbers of wings.... so fascinating!

Cherubim and seraphim are angels. To deny Cherubim actually exists is to then deny the existence of Lucifer/Satan. What he is over looking is people from different walks of life who were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write the Bible describe events and phenomenon using their vernacular of their day. So some may say angels others may be specific and say the type of angel like Cherubim for example. In other places angels are also referred to as Sons of God, or hosts of heaven. We do this as well, we use various words to indicate a thing for example to describe a friend we may say friend, brother, homie, boy, twin, etc. Another example is the different names/descriptors for Lucifer -- satan, prince of the power of the air, dragon, old serpent, god of this world, etc. The fact that they haven't found graven images of angels specifically shouldn't be cause for alarm, God's people weren't instructed to not make graven images of anything above, in or below the earth in the 10 commandments; notice that's why the bulk of his examples stem from pagan sources.Last point, when the Bible speaks of symbolic things it defines them as the Beasts in Daniel and Revelation which were symbolic for kingdoms. So in my opinion, when the Bible speaks we should let it define itself and certainly not look for answers from pagan sources.
Hell no, cherubims are some sort of angelic creatures but they are not angels. The word angel in the Bible is a very complicated term. It refers to a creature that was made as an angel or for example an angel of a child (their angel that behold the face of our Father which is in heaven), the angel of a human being etc. Cherubims are NOT angels.

Didn't God place cherubim on the east side of the garden of Eden with a flaming sword in Genesis 3:24 after driving man out of it? So according to Scriptures cherubim are not symbolical, but literal. As with many very, very well researched issues, this one contains a LOT of solid points but fails when the speaker attempts to philosophize. For example, Cherubim are not solely visionary since (as many have already noted in this comments section) they were presented at the entrance to the Garden of Eden and there is no reason to consider that metaphor: Satan is not a fallen Angel but is a fallen Cherub and he is told "Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God...Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth" (see Ezekiel 28). Also, God sits between the Cherubim as per Ezekiel chaps 1 and 10 and also since they topped the Ark of the Covenant (which means that 99% of illustrations of the Ark are inaccurate). On the strictly visionary view: there are no living creatures in heaven constantly affirming God's holiness. I would imagine that the way concepts of such composite beings made their way around the world is either due to various appearances of them or from when after the Tower of Babel event what was then known and shared history eventually came to be paganized and called myth and legend.

I noted that to. His logic is sound though I question it in that it can be refuted simply for the reasons you stated. People should not read into what is written and render their own conclusions. This is has been a problem for as long as mankind has been attempting to interpret.... when no interpretation is needed The bible should be taken literally. I also know this could exist because of experiences that have happened in my life. The Angels not having wings i can neither say is wrong or right though I believe and tell myself it was an angel that was in the role of messenger that gave me a message to a prayer. I have been trying to visualize it in my mind ever since and there was something moving behind him sort of like wings, but the wings were not really showing at all. It was like a place for them but not there. Its face was not human, but human like. It scared me quite a bit and never said anything. The answer to what i asked in my prayer was answered just by it being there which is what i asked. I automatically convinced myself it was my imagination covered a sheet over my head (i was in bed). The thing waited around for me to uncover my head and look at it. It bent its neck and tilted its head at a angle looking down at me quizzical. This was i think to let me know it was real. Softly touched the top of my head and left. I know this sounds like a crazy person or a someone delusional, by it did happen. It was really easy to dismiss until that second part happened. The supernatural is something humans can not really comprehend! They are sometimes described as three dimensional and at other times as two. I.e. those on the inner walls of the Temple are described as having the face of a man and a Lion. Those before the ark (which are three dimensional are described with all four face turned inwards. It's great to listen to you, Mr. Christopher Gornold-Smith. But I feel you are mistaken. The cherubim are real. I feel we shouldn't twist what's given in the Bible as real into a metaphor? Ezekiel actually sees them with the wheels, and them holding the expanse over which sat the throne of God. God, through the Holy Spirit, gave us the Bible to be read in its entirety, and independently. The Bible is translated into so many languages to people of so many ethnicities. To say that they must all know Hebrew and archaeology to understand the message of the Bible better is, to my understanding, wrong. It's the Holy Spirit that speaks the truth to us through the words of the Bible. I don't need an understanding of Hebrew, Greek, archaeology, astronomy, geography or biology to understand what the Holy Spirit wants to tell me through God's Word. I appreciate all your hard work sir, but I take the Bible as the final word. Period. It's symbolism, that is pointing to real creatures. The Scriptures tell us what we need to know about what these symbols mean. Scripture defines the OX, Man, Eagle, and the Lion as the Tribes of Israel! Israel carried these Tribal banners. Though there are 12 tribes, the Kerubim are showing the four tribes in their north, south, east, west, directions around the tabernacle in the desert. Remember this was a copy of a Heavenly pattern. Ezekiel is describing the four directional tribals and these creatures are the signs associated with the tribes of Judah, Ephraim, Dan, and Reuben. The Glory of Yahweh is among them. The Question is, was Ezekiel seeing a past event (The exodus from Egypt) or an event yet to come? Many believe Scripture speaks of a "Greater Exodus." In any case it would appear that, the Israel of Yahweh, the ones whom he has chosen are being represented by these symbols. The Twelve Tribes of Israel camped under these four banners; Reuben symbolized by a MAN, Dan symbolized by an EAGLE, Ephraim symbolized by the OX, and Judah symbolized by a LION. To Michael Deo : That is an interesting theory. I find it very plausible. I haven't made my mind up yet but i don't see why they can't BOTH be symbolic of the things the lecturer says they are symbolic of AND also YOU be correct also as well as them possibly being representative of real creatures (or just symbolic). Above someone referred to them as God's "transformers" - I'm not a fan of those movies but what is interesting is BEFORE i read that comment I had the idea of the 4 creatures and the single four faced creature and the ones with 2 faces possibly actually being the same being blending and separating at the command of HE who is creator & master of the entire universe. It was just a speculative theory i had in my own head. I wasn't going to share it till I saw that comment about transformers (which made me both cringe and laugh). Anyway I dont think it is something anyone need be dogmatic about. We are warned in the New Testament not to start arguments by speculating about things we don't know or understand. I think this is an excellent lecture and I appreciate the knowledge archaeology and Semitic studies have brought to the Bible. However, the limitations need to be defined. What the speaker did not do is define his limitations prior to the talk. Whilst the content is excellent, there is simply no way to disprove that ancient Semitic cultures viewed the cherubim as actual, living beings. I mean, why would something merely symbolic communicate awe, reference, and fear into someone? It doesn't exist. It's just a statue. The work of an artist with a keen imagination. The issue is can something symbolic and metaphorical represent reality as it truly is on another plane of existence? The problem I have is he and others like him are only seeing half the picture. Apart from recognizing that these represent true beings in some way, why would someone approach the King with fear and reverence as they are temple guardians? I am persuaded that the ancients believed they existed. And not merely in stone and ink. It was well thought out archeologically, but not Biblically. The claim that there is no historical narrative where Cherubim appear is simply and clearly false unless there is to be an imposed premise that limits what may be considered historical. Genesis is presented as narrative and the plain sense of the narrative is that it is God's account of His knowledge of history. God stated to Moses that he placed actual Cherubim in a geographical location to guard the entrance of the Garden of Eden. What Christopher fails to see is that the vision of Ezekiel is the only description of Cherubim (by name) from a verified, God given vision. The art work apparently was designed by the creativity of craftsmen who had no verified visions from God. Revelation describes living creatures, but does not call them Cherubim and there are two details that point to a different identity for the four creatures of Revelation. First, as Christopher pointed out, they have different physical traits that the Cherubim in Ezekiel's vision, but also in Revelation, the creatures are not under the throne. Cherubim (that are not used in artwork) are always described under the throne. Therefor, the creatures in revelation fit the description of Seraphim in Isaiah 6. Cherubim being real creatures in heaven does not present any contradiction.

I don't agree with all of it, but he nails their purpose. They are the guardians and heralds of the presence and throne of God Almighty. They are so awesome and terrifying that if you simply saw one you would fall down and worship it, but they only amplify the sense of awe when you realize that they serve God ceaselessly and praise him without end. Now that I've listened to this, I believe that even if there are literal cherubim creatures in heaven , perhaps there are various ranks, therefore the faces denote the extent of their mastery or expertise. I would imagine that a 4 faced cherub would be a creature of all-rounded mastery, and therefore of highest rank. This would explain why some have 1 face, some 2, some 4, and differing numbers of wings.... so fascinating!

I had a dream a few weeks ago and in this dream i was at home with my brother and power was off at night, so my aunt called us outside and we saw the heavens open up...so i saw two hands joined together and then they opened up started seeing bright light then saw alot of cherubims flying around that specific part and then it felt peaceful. Cherubim and seraphim are angels. To deny Cherubim actually exists is to then deny the existence of Lucifer/Satan. What he is over looking is people from different walks of life who were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write the Bible describe events and phenomenon using their vernacular of their day. So some may say angels others may be specific and say the type of angel like Cherubim for example. In other places angels are also referred to as Sons of God, or hosts of heaven. We do this as well, we use various words to indicate a thing for example to describe a friend we may say friend, brother, homie, boy, twin, etc. Another example is the different names/descriptors for Lucifer -- satan, prince of the power of the air, dragon, old serpent, god of this world, etc.
The fact that they haven't found graven images of angels specifically shouldn't be cause for alarm, God's people weren't instructed to not make graven images of anything above, in or below the earth in the 10 commandments; notice that's why the bulk of his examples stem from pagan sources.Last point, when the Bible speaks of symbolic things it defines them as the Beasts in Daniel and Revelation which were symbolic for kingdoms. So in my opinion, when the Bible speaks we should let it define itself and certainly not look for answers from pagan sources.
Hell no, cherubims are some sort of angelic creatures but they are not angels. The word angel in the Bible is a very complicated term. It refers to a creature that was made as an angel or for example an angel of a child (their angel that behold the face of our Father which is in heaven), the angel of a human being etc. Cherubims are NOT angels.

I understand what he is trying to say, but I don't believe that cherubs are symbolical. Didn't God place cherubim on the east side of the garden of Eden with a flaming sword in Genesis 3:24 after driving man out of it? So according to Scriptures cherubim are not symbolical, but literal. Doesn't Ezekiel 28 also state that satan was an anointed guardian cherub? So I do believe that Scriputres clearly state cherubs as literal and not symbolical.

As with many very, very well researched issues, this one contains a LOT of solid points but fails when the speaker attempts to philosophize.
For example, Cherubim are not solely visionary since (as many have already noted in this comments section) they were presented at the entrance to the Garden of Eden and there is no reason to consider that metaphor: Satan is not a fallen Angel but is a fallen Cherub and he is told "Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God...Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth" (see Ezekiel 28).
Also, God sits between the Cherubim as per Ezekiel chaps 1 and 10 and also since they topped the Ark of the Covenant (which means that 99% of illustrations of the Ark are inaccurate).
On the strictly visionary view: there are no living creatures in heaven constantly affirming God's holiness.
I would imagine that the way concepts of such composite beings made their way around the world is either due to various appearances of them or from when after the Tower of Babel event what was then known and shared history eventually came to be paganized and called myth and legend.

I noted that to. His logic is sound though I question it in that it can be refuted simply for the reasons you stated.
People should not read into what is written and render their own conclusions. This is has been a problem for as long as mankind has been attempting to interpret.... when no interpretation is needed The bible should be taken literally. I also know this could exist because of experiences that have happened in my life.
The Angels not having wings i can neither say is wrong or right though I believe and tell myself it was an angel that was in the role of messenger that gave me a message to a prayer. I have been trying to visualize it in my mind ever since and there was something moving behind him sort of like wings, but the wings were not really showing at all.
It was like a place for them but not there. Its face was not human, but human like. It scared me quite a bit and never said anything. The answer to what i asked in my prayer was answered just by it being there which is what i asked. I automatically convinced myself it was my imagination covered a sheet over my head (i was in bed).
The thing waited around for me to uncover my head and look at it. It bent its neck and tilted its head at a angle
looking down at me quizzical. This was i think to let me know it was real. Softly touched the top of my head and left.
I know this sounds like a crazy person or a someone delusional, by it did happen. It was really easy to dismiss until that second part happened. The supernatural is something humans can not really comprehend!

They are sometimes described as three dimensional and at other times as two. I.e. those on the inner walls of the Temple are described as having the face of a man and a Lion. Those before the ark (which are three dimensional are described with all four face turned inwards. These 'creatures are not simple motifs but the have a very important function as they describe the four transformations of the Father as He emerges into the worldly realm and then gradually returns to His Unity in Heaven. Below the Sea of Bronze there are twelve Cherubim all having just one face, that of an Oxen; these represent the twelve non differentiated cherubim which have yet to transform into their three other forms.

It's great to listen to you, Mr. Christopher Gornold-Smith. But I feel you are mistaken. The cherubim are real. I feel we shouldn't twist what's given in the Bible as real into a metaphor? Ezekiel actually sees them with the wheels, and them holding the expanse over which sat the throne of God.
God, through the Holy Spirit, gave us the Bible to be read in its entirety, and independently. The Bible is translated into so many languages to people of so many ethnicities. To say that they must all know Hebrew and archaeology to understand the message of the Bible better is, to my understanding, wrong. It's the Holy Spirit that speaks the truth to us through the words of the Bible. I don't need an understanding of Hebrew, Greek, archaeology, astronomy, geography or biology to understand what the Holy Spirit wants to tell me through God's Word.
I appreciate all your hard work sir, but I take the Bible as the final word. Period. All other branches of education are permissible to understand the world of the Bible, but not to interpret what it says. I'd leave that to the Holy Spirit. Best wishes.

It's symbolism, that is pointing to real creatures. The Scriptures tell us what we need to know about what these symbols mean. Scripture defines the OX, Man, Eagle, and the Lion as the Tribes of Israel! Israel carried these Tribal banners. Though there are 12 tribes, the Kerubim are showing the four tribes in their north, south, east, west, directions around the tabernacle in the desert. Remember this was a copy of a Heavenly pattern. Ezekiel is describing the four directional tribals and these creatures are the signs associated with the tribes of Judah, Ephraim, Dan, and Reuben. The Glory of Yahweh is among them. The Question is, was Ezekiel seeing a past event (The exodus from Egypt) or an event yet to come? Many believe Scripture speaks of a "Greater Exodus." In any case it would appear that, the Israel of Yahweh, the ones whom he has chosen are being represented by these symbols.
The Twelve Tribes of Israel camped under these four banners; Reuben symbolized by a MAN, Dan symbolized by an EAGLE, Ephraim symbolized by the OX, and Judah symbolized by a LION.
This is what I believe the Scriptures are showing us as the Meaning of this vision.

: That is an interesting theory. I find it very plausible. I haven't made my mind up yet but i don't see why they can't BOTH be symbolic of the things the lecturer says they are symbolic of AND also YOU be correct also as well as them possibly being representative of real creatures (or just symbolic). Above someone referred to them as God's "transformers" - I'm not a fan of those movies but what is interesting is BEFORE i read that comment I had the idea of the 4 creatures and the single four faced creature and the ones with 2 faces possibly actually being the same being blending and separating at the command of HE who is creator & master of the entire universe. It was just a speculative theory i had in my own head. I wasn't going to share it till I saw that comment about transformers (which made me both cringe and laugh). Anyway I dont think it is something anyone need be dogmatic about. We are warned in the New Testament not to start arguments by speculating about things we don't know or understand. As long as we get the Gospel right THAT's what important. Understanding whether Cherubim are real or symbolic is irrelevant to salvation, that said thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.

I think this is an excellent lecture and I appreciate the knowledge archaeology and Semitic studies have brought to the Bible. However, the limitations need to be defined. What the speaker did not do is define his limitations prior to the talk. Whilst the content is excellent, there is simply no way to disprove that ancient Semitic cultures viewed the cherubim as actual, living beings. I mean, why would something merely symbolic communicate awe, reference, and fear into someone? It doesn't exist. It's just a statue. The work of an artist with a keen imagination. The issue is can something symbolic and metaphorical represent reality as it truly is on another plane of existence? The problem I have is he and others like him are only seeing half the picture. Apart from recognizing that these represent true beings in some way, why would someone approach the King with fear and reverence as they are temple guardians? I am persuaded that the ancients believed they existed. And not merely in stone and ink. Let's take this to a logical conclusion, if the guardians of the temple/palace that the priest/king resides in do not exist, then perhaps the being they guard does not exist as well? Hmnn. It was well thought out archeologically, but not Biblically. The claim that there is no historical narrative where Cherubim appear is simply and clearly false unless there is to be an imposed premise that limits what may be considered historical. Genesis is presented as narrative and the plain sense of the narrative is that it is God's account of His knowledge of history. God stated to Moses that he placed actual Cherubim in a geographical location to guard the entrance of the Garden of Eden. What Christopher fails to see is that the vision of Ezekiel is the only description of Cherubim (by name) from a verified, God given vision. The art work apparently was designed by the creativity of craftsmen who had no verified visions from God. Revelation describes living creatures, but does not call them Cherubim and there are two details that point to a different identity for the four creatures of Revelation. First, as Christopher pointed out, they have different physical traits that the Cherubim in Ezekiel's vision, but also in Revelation, the creatures are not under the throne. Cherubim (that are not used in artwork) are always described under the throne. Therefor, the creatures in revelation fit the description of Seraphim in Isaiah 6. Cherubim being real creatures in heaven does not present any contradiction.
