Really surprised by the interior plastics. Usually every single VW has soft touch on the dashboard and upper doors. Although I must say it is pointless having a soft touch dashboard since you don't drive around touching it. It is more important to have soft touch plastics on the upper door perhaps where you would rest your arm or lower down by your leg where it touches the center panel.
VW says they did it on purpose because they didn't want T-Roc to compete with Golf. But they just went too far, interior quality is much worse than in the Polo. Soft touch plastics do matter everywhere - they look better, they're less reflective, they don't rattle or squeak and on the upper doors you may actually touch them.
Dear Matt. I love your reviews. The only thing I’d say is when you list the 5 cool features of a car, you shouldn’t really then just mention features you get on premium models. 5 cool features and 5 annoying things should be on all models. Just my thoughts:)
Volkswagen T-Roc is the only car in its range that gets as standard Lane keeping assist, pedestrian monitoring, auto emergency braking and ACC. And it has unique led lights and design.
SmallLittleMicky You 're obviously dont know what you're talking about. T-Roc' s design amazed everyone back in 2014 when it was a concept car because it is a cool small SUV with "coupe" finishing back, cool Led light Considering your comment ,you are a fan of french cars
Yes it's quite obvious that I don't know what I'm talking about - very much so. All the tell tale signs are there. Yeah, anyway, everyone likes it - you can speak for over 7 billion people? Well done mate, very well done. Yes, absolutely, when you dig into the nitty gritty of my comment all the signs are there that I like French cars (which of course is a very bad thing) - indeed quite obvious again. I always use to buy Vauxhall until now. The french have taken them over, I will never have a car that has anything to do with France! Now if VW had taken them over that would be a different matter.
Micky kirton Forgive me for asking, but why? A parent company also has no influence over the models that are made, all of Vauxhalls cars are designed in Britain, and made in the Britain and Europe.
I work at the T-Roc factory, here in portugal and I can say that the T-Roc R version is being built for tests. 310 Hp, 2.0 Bi-turbo. The car has a different look from the front and rear bumpers and 4 exhausts, thats the changes for now.
Yes, a very helpful and to the point review. Thanks Matt. Regarding rough road capability, I've noticed that the T-Roc has relatively minimal ground clearance, in fact less than the T-Cross. I think that I understand VW's rationale but potential buyers need to be aware of this limitation.
People often ask in videos, what the point of this car is. I play Golf, and at one point I had a Tiguan R-Line and a Golf R. The golf clubs didn't fit in the boot of the Golf, but they fit in the Tiguan, but the Tiguan was terribly slow (150 BHP R-Line), and the clubs had to go in the back seat of the Golf, so this T-Roc with the 445 litre boot would do the job nicely, and the 2.0 TSi is quicker than the Tiguan. So I don't wreck my back seats, or loose my license. I can still get the shopping in the boot, and enjoy a spirited drive when i'm late for my tee off time.
bought mine in october 2021, fantastic car, fine automotive machinery, amazing drive . I god damn love it! it is an ubelievable car and it makes me want to drive it all the time.
The interior quality is definitely something that hasn’t been touched upon properly with the motoring press and MQB-based cars. My Mk7.5 Golf interior quality is noticeably less plush than the Mk6 and Mk5 that I’ve experienced in the past - same for my parents’ Octavia RS230. The Tiguan is particularly bad and feels quite cheap - yet the Kodiaq doesn’t feel anywhere near as cheap, and has much better sound insulation and manages to feel much less hollow than other MQB-based cars.
Great video, Mat. I bought this car (Sport 1.5 TSI) and I'm really happy with it. I hope Ferrari lets you enter their showroom in next car expos, you deserve it!

It would make much more sense to make sure the interior door panels (and handles), and transmission covers / foot wells are made with a better feeling material. Have just become the PROUD OWNER of a T_ROC, super car to drive and handle, forget the plastics the rest is great and I wonder if Mat is going in for being a "drama queen" !?
Why comments obsessed with interior quality ? As long as seats , wheel and controls are good . Most car reviews aren’t very good for me personally , I’d like to know engine design/reliability/efficiency , front wheel drive or rear wheel , in line or transverse. What moves the wheels , how suspension is designed , overhead cam single or double , timing belt or chain , diesel maintenance and extra added dpf ? Everyone is always on about interior materials? I can never find a more mechanical review except maybe Wikipedia.
I agree that the cheap plastics on the dash and doors are nasty, but it still looks quite nice. And in day to day use I think it won't stand out that much! Shame since the outside looks so stylish!
The R-line will have those bits optional covered in leather so, at least it will feel much smoother on the dash and doors edges not that rough like it is now on these versions.. ;0)
Vanessa Oelmann Tell me about it. The cabin just looks amazing and I think it would hold up even 5 years down the line. Will have to wait till the price drops and get a cheap second hand one.
Mr H Reviews Mr H Reviews picked up my 3008 yesterday. Really smooth and I love the interior. Had to wait 4 months so they must be selling a lot of them. Much better value than this, imo. Was £25k (co car).
Not a VW fan, but I'm glad you finally did the center console test to a car that does pass! It's not fair to blame Koreans and French if you don't do the same test on other manufacturers.
Hard plastic dash on the range topper? Don't say this is a sign of things to come for the Golf. Any hard plastic dash on a new golf and I won't be bothering with it. It's clearly built for those who want style over substance, everything goes into the exterior looks.

I bet its from Doug Demuro
Good review as always. Thumbs up for the tea-rock glove box. Lol.
Have just become the PROUD OWNER of a T_ROC, super car to drive and handle, forget the plastics the rest is great and I wonder if Mat is going in for being a "drama queen" !?
Dacia has the same interior as T-ROC but only costs 20k less LMAOOOOOO
Dacias are Renaults with a technonoly from the late 90s LMAOOOOOOO
I would think the problem is that it's more likely to start making noises (the hard plastic)
The R-line will have those bits optional covered in leather so, at least it will feel much smoother on the dash and doors edges not that rough like it is now on these versions.. ;0)
Very nice! :-)
Review should include vanity mirror n rear view mirror, details of seats, bit more details on steering mounted controls...
£31k for a base decent model, yeah no thanks Volkswagen.
Rather go for a Peugeot 3008, looks great outside and in.
Peugeot 3008 is such a beautiful and futuristic looking car
Vanessa Oelmann Tell me about it. The cabin just looks amazing and I think it would hold up even 5 years down the line. Will have to wait till the price drops and get a cheap second hand one.
Mr H Reviews Mr H Reviews picked up my 3008 yesterday. Really smooth and I love the interior. Had to wait 4 months so they must be selling a lot of them. Much better value than this, imo. Was £25k (co car).
John Williams I am so happy for you 😒
the fingerprint smudging on the touch screen was a smart way of showing it. Had a good giggle over what was written.
Love the car, especially the DTRL/indicators 😀
Liam they have the same things on cars like Volvos and Vauxhalls
_Hants_VXR_ i know, i mean the shape and position of the them.
Not a VW fan, but I'm glad you finally did the center console test to a car that does pass!
It's not fair to blame Koreans and French if you don't do the same test on other manufacturers.
I love it, but I think the Tiguan is a better option or polo.
Tiguan is bigger and much more expensive. T-Roc is a pumped Polo, Tiguan is a pumped Golf.
The thing I don't understand is that the Golf is already a practical family car. It even comes in an estate version if you need more boot space.
Looks like carwow now has many non Britain viewers...Mat has has come a long way from that old channel Matwatson cars
Krish T Ofc it does lol. Quality!
The best days were when Mat&Rebecca together..good old days at carbuyer
He;'s also hot
Krish T True
Watching from India where they are not even gonna launch this car !!
Than you for doing that centre console shake test
Smart and classy looking automobile
this guy is so funny. wish we would have that informative and funny car reviews in germany.
I just cannot swallow these hard touch plastics
Kacper B you are not supposed to eat the plastic. ;-)
Are you sure?
I just must have high quality soft touch plastics, otherwise I'll be infuriated.
Yes, I touch them frequently
While driving? It's menacing.
Now I just can touch plastics...
Yes, a lot
I sleep on it, I eat breakfast, I write essays and so one
Hard plastic dash on the range topper? Don't say this is a sign of things to come for the Golf. Any hard plastic dash on a new golf and I won't be bothering with it. It's clearly built for those who want style over substance, everything goes into the exterior looks.
31k for this cheap thing, no thank you I'd rather buy mercedes gla or c class
The Mercedes GLA is based on the A Class which shares mechanical parts and engines with Renault. So yeah same story there.
Volvo
bmw
Lada
Or a Volvo xc40
Hello, would you please do a video on the new Nissan kicks - we are looking at buying one - ps.we love all your videos your so entertaining to watch. 😊
I think it looks good.
A 67 plate T roc, review released 17 feb 2018, and yet the title is 'Volkswagen T-Roc 2020 SUV in-depth review | carwow Reviews'
Audi Q2 similar size with same cost cutting hard plastics.
i have q2 and it really does have soft touch plastic all around except at the bottom of the door. But i think t rock comes with more standard equipment than q2. I tried them both and q2 feels a little bit sporty and certanly looks that way.
justsomeguy70 Carwow review pointed out the hard plastic in the middle of the doors th-cam.com/video/387NhKKbV7s/w-d-xo.html
yes, youre right! that panell in the middle is hard, but above the steering wheel and on the doors at the top it is soft. In my opinion soft plastic makes sene ond the top of the doors where people ret ther hands, and above the steering wheel (kind of..) . The rest of it doesnt bother me so much.
justsomeguy70 I have owned several Audi’s - tried the Q2 but ended up buying an S3.
i have had vw golf, maybe that´s it
Love your videos man!! I love cars. And you are the best car reviewer!!
I think its a great mini SUV
yes
Matt you keep on going on about soft vs hard plastics, but sometimes it doesn't matter, I dont think vw did it to save some pennies, I have a golf 7 with a soft dash but this cars dash looks just as nice if not better.

Can you review a 2023 t roc now in 2021, just like you have reviewed a 67 plate and click bait it for 2020?
5:46 i see what you did there! Noice
Yorkshire tea and a rock lol,his face though,he really tried to hold himself not try burst in laughter haha
Everybody improve their cars on quality.. but hey ! Not volkswagen...
keva kevincek Guess they have to save some money cause of the Diesel gate.
Danne6und8zig Business world doesn't appreciate excuses.
Guess that’s why VW is world leader and others are not.
kraenk12 world leaders in making diesel scandals**
Even Alfa Romeo did a lot of improvement. Facelifted Golf is worsier than the outgoing model. Only the technology is new but the quality is worse.
