- I had this log drying for almost 2 years, I used epoxy from Home Depot, I coated the top with a layer of epoxy, the sides have 5 coats of oil based finish.

Very beautiful good job buddy!! You learned what to do and not to do now. Hot glue, semi hard plastic, saran wrap and frog tape and package tape would have made it much easier for you but first time doing it and you did good.

what kind of tape did you use?
Did you find that the resin soaked into the wood at all? I have a large log…. 10” diameter and 5’ long that I want to stabilize with epoxy before cutting it into planking…. It is a log that was cut somewhere between 1860 and 1880 and is stamped on the end from the living era here in michigan.

Hi, nice work firstly, I did never work with epoxy jet but I'm trying to find some finish method for my spiral trunk stairs which I'm planning to assemble. I have a question about the epoxy, didn't it started cracking after time? You worked with a pretty dry wood I see but anyway.
The log that I used has been drying for a few years, it does move a little but not enough to crack or pop the epoxy, I think generally the wood should be around 7-11 percent moisture.
What are you mixing in colour?

Thanks for sharing. Any tips on how to properly dry a log, and how long to dry it for?
If it’s air drying they recommend 1 year for every 12 inches. Preferably in a climate controlled area.

Now I know what to do with all the old pieces/stumps/branches of old cottonwood, Apple, and pear wood I have laying around!
So would you recommend deep pour epoxy/resin for this type of work? And where did you get the legs very contemporary!

Did you keep putting coats of epoxy on the top on at 5 min 41 seconds before you sanded it with different grit sandpaper ? ( 3 -4 coats of epoxy and 3-4 sandinga after each coat ?
Also wouod yacht varnish work well for the sides without a stain ?
I thing that would work, I just stained it for the color

Thank you! I used wisebond deep pour. Tools I used a router, and two different types of palm sanders.
May I ask how long it took for the first pour to dry? And are you using countertop or deep pour epoxy?
Only like a day or two. I let it sit for a while to cure before I started sanding it

@Wei-Li Heng I used the an oil based sealer then a few coats of bona woodline oil based finish.
Will this hold up for outside year round exposure like on the porch?
That’s a good question, I’m not sure with the epoxy, but I know the finish won’t hold up.

I bought from a car pats store that is used for autobody.
How would you epoxy the sides? The same method with paper wrap and duct tape?
After the cracks are filled? Maybe a paint brush? I put finish on the sides.
Is it just spring water that you are using when wet sanding around the 7 minute mark?

What tape did you use for the sides?
The yellow tape didn’t work, I used ducktape
What was the shiny stuff you put on top right after the epoxy
It was floor finish
I am doing my first log for fun, and I have started to debark and sand the outside. I have a crack similar to yours. I don't have years I guess to wait for the log to dry!
Do you reckon it will still be fine to epoxy the crack? What are the ramifications?

The epoxy had some flexibility and as long as the moisture content stays the same it should be fine.

I used what ever Home Depot has, it should be a deep pour epoxy.
I have a piece that I plan to do about the same size. How long did this take you to complete?
Also; do you know how much epoxy you used on this?
I took me about a week, I used less than a gallon
What did you polish it with
The top? I put gloss finish on everything
What’s the clear stuff you used to make it preserve n shiny

On this one I used a generic deep pour epoxy from Home Depot, the log is maple festool and dewalt palm sander, hairpin legs from eBay. Any thing else?

Yes my bad Lenmar is the sealer that I used on this one, I’ve used both

Approximately how many hours of work was it?
Also I’m considering using the epodex product bc it looks like a very high quality material that may require less polishing. Any tips or ideas to reduce time in the finishing department?
Being my first time it took me 3-5 days
As far as time goes, just being more knowledgeable on the full procedure would make things go faster

Hello Kametra, I used a router on the bottom of the log to flatten it out.
I used a 6 inch festool palm sander, starting with a more aggressive grit (80) and going up to 5k grit with water to make it clear.
Great table but why the overbearing loud music over the instructions?
Beautiful,but the music drowned out anything you would say about the materials used. Your not the only one that has music too loud,preview the video ,please ,so we can learn from the video.

@@traytonwuollet1776 Well thanks for the reply! As a total "noob" in resin work I need all the help I can hear! At present I am in the still carving stages of a chair from a New Mexico Black Walnut stump log, with many faults so what you are doing seems right in line.

So did you use clear epoxy without the dye any parts that didnt have cracks ?
I used the the colored epoxy on all the cracks, and clear on the top, it hasn’t cracked.
Yes, that is correct. Dye in the cracks clear on top.
