      The main thing is that he likes it. I love this table, but I don't have space for two or more tables at home, if I had to choose, I would choose wood. This table lacks depth, something like 3D milling at a depth of 8/10, in the shape of the same jeans, with some interesting ragged relief (so that all layers can be seen) then poured with super transparent resin. Because now the table looks like it's fiberboard laminated with a single layer of denim, it doesn't feel like it's made entirely of denim.

    Awesome project! Since you asked for suggestions-as an aerospace engineer, my mind jumps to vacuum infusion. It’s a pretty common technique in aircraft manufacturing, and one of the big benefits is you can completely avoid the mess of epoxy.
    You would basically put the whole denim stack in a sealed bag with some “flow media” as the top layer. Then you pull vacuum on the bag on one side and allow your epoxy to flow in through the other side. Once it’s fully infused, you let it cure under vacuum. Then you can peel the bag off it and ideally you have a perfect denim layup with no mess. Hope this helps!

      I've seen the vacuum bag method work as a means to make micarta successfully before, using various materials and both glue and epoxy, so this would be great at a much larger scale like this desk.

Imagine how depleted our natural resources would be if everyone were as wasteful as this when it came to hobby crafts. Geesh wow, still smh in agony over this. The denim, leather, brass combo table is an instant classic and would fit in almost any casual space. I love the fact that the denim slab could be used as stock to make parts. I can see people using it for automotive trim pieces, gun stocks and grips and even jewelery. And you haven’t even scratched the surface of different colors or tie dyed denim.

    I do not know how your video popped up in my account, but as a crafter, sewer, and thrifty recycler... I watched every second! This process was so fascinating. And the results?! Just incredible. If you want to use the pants think smaller, end tables, coffee tables, maybe some modernist designs with curves and skinny legs.
    BRASS WAS GENIUS whether intentional or not, the brass mimics the studs in making of genes, and your brass outlets were just cherries on the dessert❣ and the leather is also a nod the the jeans lifestyle. All thats left is to get leather tags embossed with your branding to put your claim to these art pieces. You are absolutely on to something. And you can add design elements with your colored epoxy like rhinestones. ❤❤❤

    This is very similar to fiberglass work! I think you’d have a lot of success with vacuum bags for the clamp up. That would also be a simple way to start making non-flat forms/molds to layup curved shapes. You could also get some biaxial fiberglass and work that into the layers to get thinner parts that have structural strength. I’m excited to see what you do on this new path, there’s certainly a lot of opportunities!

    • @InsufficientGravitas
      @InsufficientGravitas ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its basically the same kinda material, a fiberous weave held to gether with a resin, pretty similar to carbon fiber too. You could probably try and imitate the construction metods used in making composits, but I fear denim may be too thick to paint the resin on and have it properly soak through the fibers.

      @Thinkle911 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, i guess technically it is exactly the same as working with fiberglass. The body of the infamous Trabant car from the communistic regime German Democratic Republic was made like this table: cotton cloth soaked in resin laminated into shapes. it does not depend so much on the fiber you are using, the working technics are mostly the same. Technically you coud also cheat and laminate the denim over a lighter weight, but robust core to safe work, time and money on resin and denim and avoid emissions by wasting ressources. maybe it wouldn't feel right, but in the end noone would ever care, even, if you tell them.

      100%. Used to build fiber glass/carbon fiber boats. Vacuum infusion would be the way to go. It’s a bit of a finicky process, but probably worth the setup. Alternatively, lots of good tutorials on hand laminating sheets. This is essentially fiber glass layup work. We talked quite a bit about making tables out of regular fabric in the shop, considering we had all the gear to do it.

    • @BlacktailStudio
      @BlacktailStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +40

      We used to vacuum infuse carbon fiber sheet on a sliding glass door - Apply mold release to the door, lay down your fabric (worked up to 1”+ thick), peel ply, resin/vacuum lines, vacuum bag. Suck it down, introduce the resin, let it cure. No mess, and using glass ensured the surface finish was excellent.

    My favorite brand of denim used to be Levi's. Then for a while there was a store, I don't even remember the name of it now and they had over and called "___"something Blue" (therein lies the problem with living for any decades, is that you actually run through many phases, especially the last 30 or 40 years with companies coming and going, thus names come & go also...😆🤭) But, Oh my gosh! What a fantastic table!! I can't believe that you take fabric and do that with it! I have been seamstress for over years... Yep that isn't a typo, 62+ years of sewing. I started when I was just a girl! And I love to do things that are challenging, however, this is over the top! I love what you did with the brass fixtures, and The perfect color of leather for the legs! I literally would not have changed a thing in this! I would so love one of these tables, and the desk is even better!! Better yet, making a sewing table!! There you go!! 😍🥰👍🏼🤗🕊️😆🤭
