DIY Floating Log End Table | Modern Builds | EP. 4

  • My take on the popular log end table made from a tree trunk. I've updated it by using a spacer on the bottom to make it "float" off of the ground.

    Something I did on a stump table recently to get the top flat and even is to work it down with a power hand planer. Saved me a ton of sanding and made a really nice table top.
    Got my plane at Walmart for around $30... worth every penny!

    carving a little rectangular hole in the sides with the chainsaw (for storage of books, knick knacks, etc) would be a neat way to improve an already great idea :)

    A few words of advice to everyone who is going to try this. Let the logs season for a couple of years. You want a moisture content less than 5%. Also, don't jump to far & fast in your sandpaper grades. You'll find that slowly progressing up in sandpaper sizes will help you keep from clogging up the paper & give you a much better finish. These two tips will help your project go much faster and easier as well as look a lot better.

      @OnlyFlans42 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Would the seasoning process not be more of a mandatory step for slab builds such as coffee tables, as they would be much more likely to split or deform? Unless I'm missing something!

    You could ad a LEDstrip to the base of your log. It would look like it's floating on light :)

    I did something very similar to this with a couple of logs I got. It took a while and I discovered some rot in the middle so I decided to fill them with epoxy - little did I know the logs were rotten all the way through - I ended up using a lot of epoxy and the logs weigh a lot now. I put beach glass in the crevices and cracks at the surface and flooded the logs with epoxy so now it they look stunning. The logs are all shiny and the beach glass looks like it was inside the tree and is coming out. It was a very simple (if somewhat laborious) project but so satisfying once I was finished. We have them next to our armchairs in the living room. Everyone asks about them and if I will make them one.

      +funfunstuie That's so awesome! I wish I had the idea to fill all the rot in this table with epoxy when I made it.... Live and learn haha!

    Nice build. If I were to do this, I'd end up taking an extra level and wiring up some LED's to use as underglow under the floating part, then maybe routing out a channel to the back/hidden part of the log to run a toggle switch up to the table surface. Food for thought if you want to get crafty next time you make one.

    I salvaged stumps from a redwood. Unfortunately, they aren’t quite tall enough for a table. However, now that I saw your video I can add a disk (instead of legs) under the log in order to raise it to table height. Thanks.

  • @ambercutter4051
    @ambercutter4051 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello. Thanks for sharing this video. The table looks really good. Had a thought ( no really I did LOL ) while watching you with the snapline. I am a visual artist and one way I employ to make a straight line on round things is to use a rubber band. From very small to giant rubber bands. You can see if it's straight and play with height. Have a great day ....... Peace

    Good video. I finish log homes for a living and always have people asking me to build them stuff like this. I have someone that saw a video on TH-cam and wants two of these. Maybe I have you to thank. In "my" opinion 120grit on the surface is as far as a person should go. This allows your finish to penetrate deeper. But we are all TH-cam expert right. Thanks for the video.

    • @ModernBuilds
      @ModernBuilds  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +EricNielsen187 I always sand everything to at least 220 grit. With the top being all end grain, you won't have any issues with it soaking in enough finish.

  • @pamason9191
    @pamason9191 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    @modernbuilds Cool project! If you lower the guides on your bandsaw you will get a lot less blade flex, and it makes a more accurate cut much easier. Even though accuracy wasn't necessary on this application.

    This table arrived well packaged and on time. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!

    Great project! Did you have to deal with any sap? What would you recommend for getting the sap off the wood before sanding and staining?

    • @ModernBuilds
      @ModernBuilds  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm. You should let the log dry out for a while before you make anything with it. Once the log dries, so should the sap

    Hey I was curious if you would ever do a video on the tools you use. Workshop walk through or something. Reason being, I've been into wood work for a long time but just now investing into my own tools but I'm curious if buying high end tools is really necessary. Thanks!

    • @ModernBuilds
      @ModernBuilds  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tano Hardman Hey man, I do plan on doing something along like that soon. High end tools are definitely not always necessary. My recommendation is alway to buy tools as you need them. If you know you'll be using a tool for most of your projects maybe of thinking saving up for something at least mid level, but if its a one time or occasional use tool, then a cheap tool might be perfect. I use a lot of Harbor Freight tools and some of them have worked well for me, and others have worn out or not performed well.
