Such a great topic term, “secondhand nostalgia”. Now I need to think what games or consoles would correlate for me in that term. Love the video man, and beyond humbled at the shoutout and kind words man! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Dude the term "Secondhand Nostalgia" is perfect for my gaming experience! Half the time I play games that I missed growing up from over a decade ago. Right now Im playing through FF7 on my PC because for so long I dismissed the games due to me not being a big JRPG guy and now Im really enjoying my time and makes me feel nostalgia for a simpler time in my life.
the idea of secondhand nostalgia seems like a marriage between the novelty of experiencing something you haven't before, while also having aesthetics, features, feelings, or even your own tertiary knowledge from a time you already have nostalgia for from existing experiences. very unique and potent combination!
Im experiencing second hand nostalgia right now By jumping into Warhammer 40K tabletop as a 40 year old who can just barely finally afford to put together a 2000 point army lol its been a great experience learning modeling and painting through TH-cam tutorials, but just in the last week ive been hit hard with Pokefever lol
I think it's quite easy to explain, humans are really good when it comes to visual perception (heck, human eyes can react to a single photon) so when we spend many of our formative years willingly training ourselves in pattern recognition of similar technologies and aesthetics of an era, we then become absolute powerhouses at it, I have never seen most of the games you showcased in the video yet every single one of them reminds me of several games I played (many of which I've already forgotten so it's a strange feeling, like trying to access a "partially corrupted memory" which has form/feeling but not content). The technology of the era shared so many techniques that were basically ubiquituous, even across game consoles, I think most people who lived through it can intuitively tell the difference between 8, 16 and 32 bit games, rendering techniques, textures, shading, polygon counts and specially game engines, hell, I get secondhand nostalgia just by looking at the dithering of a random PS1 videogame I've never played, and make it double if it's on a CRT tv, the channel Displaced Gamers made an excellent video about it; also, something similar goes for historical chips that were used industry-wide for certain periods of time. Lastly, if you haven't already and you want to expererience extreme musical second hand nostalgia, you may get your mind blown by discovering the inspiration of SO many Japanese videogame composers: *T-square* (Specially Adventures, 1985), check Sister Marian and Travelers ;) but you can also check the famous Cassiopea and Yellow Magic Orchestra, Japanese fusion jazz (and YMO) was extremely influential.
You put this so well. I hope you choose to stick around. I've been on a big Japanese dnb/jungle kick lately because I miss that era of early PS1/Dreamcast music as I said in the video. I'll check out the music you suggested as well. I think for the reasons you stated above, that's why I get so excited when I see artists making new portraits using the limitations of something like the ZX Spectrum's color palette, or someone who made their own full functional new NES game, for example. Old but new. Neohistorical. It's such a fun brain tease. Thanks so much for commenting on this video. It's a short and sweet one but still one of my favorites (and so far no one has come in just to hate on Pac Man and the Ghostly Adventures so that's also a big win for me)
@@humblemudgames Sure, I recently watched the pokemon video and I was impressed by the production values and the thought behind the script, it's impressive how concise it is, and, as you've probably inferred from my long piece of text, I also like exploring topics and thinking it through. I've always wondered what it was called, I like ZX spectrum and old graphics in general but maybe because I like saturated colors😆 The Pac Man gameplay is engaging and serves the same purpose as the games of those tiktok videos that are used for user retention since we all have ever decreasing attention spans thanks to the internet
@@VersusThem Thanks so much for the kind words! That Pokémon video saw quite a few rewrites and iterations, and was probably the most labor-intensive video I've done so far from an editing sense, so I really appreciate that! And yeah, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures is just very satisfying to look at, with the bright colors and round designs. Perfect for b-roll footage.
Don't have secondhand nostalgia for any game, but listening to 70is music gives it to me. ABBA being the best example. It's funny because I physically can't be nostalgic for a time before my birth, but here we are. I think it's a form of societal nostalgia. That I've seen enough people treat that time as old and nostalgic, that that is my only conception of it. Same for old pixel art in games. Kinda weird, but I like it.
I think secondhand nostalgia is basically the reason why nostalgic lofi beats are huge. people crave to be in an idyllic version of a place and time they've never been and don't remember.
@@humblemudgames keep it up friend! It only goes up from here. I’ve noticed that sometimes you can just get unlucky with the algorithm and a video might not preform like you expected and even vice versa with a video you might think is mediocre at best will blow up. It’s ironic but it happens and there’s always the hope that it gets a resurgence later on! Sometimes old videos will suddenly become relevant it’s pretty cool. Godspeed brotha
@@humblemudgames There isn't much gameplay to it, and the story is barely there, but it will always have a special place in my heart. There are guides online on how to get some of the more secret dragons as well, adding a lot of depth to the rather shallow seeming mechanics.
For me Saturn & Dreamcast bring me back to the arcade days, I never owned either system until recently & it's been a blast from the past. I did play them as an adult more at friends places, but only played a small amount as a kid. I also find myself getting nostalgic for World of Warcraft (Vanilla & Burning Crusade), as well as other early 2000's pc games whenever the leaves start to fall around the time of year. Also the shout-out to @GameCubeGalaxy is well deserved, been a fan of his channel for a few years now
GameCube Galaxy is the best. I also have really been enjoying the Saturn too. I'm one of those weirdos who loves Sonic R and I've been digging Guardian Heroes occasionally
@@humblemudgames nice, if you get a chance a great party game on Saturn is Robo Pit. You can make robots & have the AI fight each other, great for a few friends to try & out do each other.
You put alot of my daily thoughts into words. Keep it up! I recommend Shenmue 1 + 2, it's on steam and that game is basically an interactive time capsule. It even lets you explore the walled city of Kowloon, a city that no longer exists.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I actually have Shenmue 1&2 for PS4 and played the first Shenmue about a year and a half ago. It almost instantly skyrocketed into my top 10 games of all time. I want to play Shenmue II, I just want to be in the right mindset first and make sure I can totally appreciate it
It's really good, if you're able to try it somehow I'd highly recommend it. Very much like the original God of War but it does enough to differentiate itself too
I'm watching Twin Peaks for the first time ever at 32, and this feeling strikes hard. In a good way. You just know that - here and now - you are experiencing something that will stay with you forever. And it was waiting for you - now is the right time. I'm also in full agreement that there is always something great to play, see, and learn. And that we should think for ourselves, instead of swimming in the flow of mainstream opinions and moods. Public discourse about pretty much anything is contaminated with unhealthy amounts of cynicism and "low hanging fruit" opinions. A mature human being aims to filter that out and develop an independent, and dare I say, refined taste. Great content on this channel, I wish you well in this life and your brother in life beyond. Before we all meet there at some point, let's all take care. We have things to do and a legacy of good facts of our existence to build and leave behind 🫡
Hey -- I LOVE this comment. Thank you, thank you for acknowledging my brother as well. Based on your comments here about "swimming in the flow of mainstream opinions"... I think you'll really like the video I just put out called "Games I Was Wrong About", because the back half of that video sounds almost 1:1 with what you're saying here. Thanks for such an astute and insightful comment, it was validating for me to read that I'm on the right track with hopefully building a community here around this little channel. Hope you watch that one, and hope you choose to stick around. I wish the best for you if I don't see you again, though!
Thank you! Lots of people recognize the Phantasy Star Online ones, but not the Shenmue ones! I played that game for the first time ever about a year and a half ago and it skyrocketed to my top 10. life-changing game.
I played Shenmue on the original Dreamcast when I was young and it's my favorite game of all time, specially the second one. Certainly not a game made to please everyone, but it's always wonderful to see that new gamers are discovering its magic even after so many years.
@@LionHuntington I can't imagine how wild experiencing that game must've been at that time. I'm really excited to play Shenmue II, I just have to be in the right mindset for it.
I owe Kendrick Lamar for that one! I was trying to think of what it was I could say, and flashed back to the days when that song was so big and I was like, yup, I'mma have to use that.
