Watch Greg's story in our documentary film: When Young Kids Do Hard Time here:
    • Video
Featured in a New York Times Magazine cover story -- In 1993, Greg was a 14-year old small town Indiana kid who had never been in trouble with the law, when in the middle of the night he shot and killed both his parents. Within days, his case was waived to adult court and Greg was ultimately sentenced to 60 years behind bars. At the time, he was the youngest boy in Indiana history to be sent to adult prison.
After years behind bars, Greg reached out to a filmmaker who was filming a movie in his old hometown, curious if she'd be interested in hearing his story. While the filmmaker was busy at the time and couldn't respond to his request, her award-winning journalist husband, Scott Anderson, took an interest in Greg's case. After years of corresponding, Scott eventually wrote a New York Times Magazine cover story on Greg's case. And there began an unlikely friendship that lasts today.
What makes a young kid with no public history of family turmoil do the unthinkable? In this extraordinary prison interview, we look back at Greg's story...from our first interview with him behind bars in 2010, to journalist & author Scott Anderson who went back inside the adult prison where Greg has been housed for nearly 20 years, as the two recount their unlikely friendship and everything that transpired along the way. Ousley reflects on that horrible night and where things went so wrong. According to Greg, his constant state of depression as a young child, his feelings of hopelessness and his parents unwillingness to discuss his issues, led him to complete despair. His story is a case involving the issue of parricide, defined as a person who murders his or her mother or father or sometimes a close relative. But rare is the case where a child kills both his mother and father as Greg did.
Halfway through the interview, Calamari Productions Founder Karen Grau also interviews Scott and Greg together, learning more about how an award-winning author and journalist decided to remain in touch with a prisoner who had committed such a rare crime, and what the experience has been like for both of them.
UPDATE: During his three decades behind bars, Greg committed himself to staying out of trouble and gaining his education while incarcerated, ultimately receiving his college degree.
Greg was released from prison in 2019. Scott Anderson was waiting for him as he walked out the prison gates. They still keep in touch today.

Sooooo… he still doesn’t know why he killed his parents? And according to court documents he had told his mom that all he thinks about is murder? Uhh… maybe we should sort this out before setting him free? What if that mysterious condition happens again?

I have a friend who was convicted of a murder he did not commit when he was 20, and is serving 84 years. An innocent man has spent 28 years in prison and this guy is getting out after serving 30/60. In my friends case, The murderer came forward and my friend still remains incarcerated. He was given a new trial and the judge overturned his conviction; however, the commonwealth attorney appealed the case and the SC came up with a "new theory" that he may not have been the murderer, but that a jury would believe he set her up to be abducted.

@@toriwolf5978 . . . what is the payment for taking another's life? What is the standard for defining "payment"? Should we use the standards set by the New Testament or the Old Testament? Where does rehabilitation fit in? Should payment be tempered with the compassion? I think that the biggest issue with this man is the fact that he was socialized in the prison setting; his life became what was behind the walls of the prison culture. His day started with the opening up of his cell door and ended with the closing of the cell door. In between the opening and closing, his decisions were really decided by someone else. His schedule was predetermined, and there wasn't a whole lot of choosing on his part. This man has never held a real job; he's never had to pay a bill. Upon release, he faces some real challenges, and to function well, he is required to meet those challenges thoughtfully and unemotionally. Can decades in prison prepare this man for "freedom's journey?"

I know some people who have been thrown down stairs, punched into walls, beaten unjustly for something someone else did. But they never entertained the idea of killing their parents or even striking them. Hurt feelings don’t justify unjustly taking a life. Then two short years his conversation turned to how wonderful he is because of the unjust amount of time he has had to spend locked up, unjust because of how young he was and how they should have treated him for any mental issues associated with blowing his parents away.

I can understand someone that had a decent / good childhood would be thinking like you. I, on the other hand, had a real bad childhood and can see how a child could get to the point of killing a parent or both. I was so very close to doing what this guy had done when I was between the age of 14-15 yrs of age, I was at the very last moment when I stopped myself. My mother and her boyfriend were both sleeping and neither of them knew what I was about to do. There was only two things that stopped me at the very last moment, the first was that I figured that I may not be forgiven by God and then I thought about how this would affect my younger siblings. I went through the abuse for another 2-3 yrs before I was finally able to get out. Many yrs later, I finally opened up to my older sister as to what I had almost done.

    • @rosas4851
      @rosas4851 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@sandilacy9498 oh trust me my childhood was FAR from good. I can guarantee my dad was at least 20 times worse than his. My dad was schizophrenic and thought the whole time some other men are in our house and that was why he'd beat my mom and my older sisters all the time. There were times I came home to him dragging my mom around the house with her hair, chasing her around with a knife or brick and you name it. Other children hated school but the whole time I was at school I'd look at the clock and being scared and anxious of going back to that home again. My dad would talk about how much he could sell us for and I was just like 9 years old. He once even brought an old guy to our home and had already sold my older sister for 300 bucks to him but my mom and everyone else kicked the guy out. I'm sorry you've had a rough childhood too but murder is never the answer. He could have just escaped as my brother did and he has built his life ever since and has his own family. As he himself said something is mentally wrong with him. People who have homicidal thoughts usually it can't be treated. They always have to be under some type of supervision in my opinion for other people's safety

What I do not hear is a young man who killed his parents showing remorse. He does not, necessarily, dodge questions but he seems to avoid discussing and perhaps accepting what HE DID to his parents. There are reasons he did not get a sentence modification. There are reasons he served 30 years in prison. He seems to blame the legal system itself for his predicament. Since the details are the murders are not in the video, here is a synopsis. "At around 11:30PM on the 23rd of February, Greg slowly crept into his parents’ bedroom armed with a 12-gauge shotgun. He shot his father once in the face and arm before turning the gun to his mother. The shot had awoken Bonnie and before Greg had the chance to shoot, she had run into the dining room in a bid to call for help. Tragically, however, Greg followed Bonnie and fired two shots at her, killing her in the dining room."
According to Greg, he and his parents argued quite frequently. He said that they argued about chores, about the length of his hair and whether he could go to his friend’s house. In fact, Greg had often spoke to his friends about wanting to kill his parents but seemingly, nobody ever thought that he was being serious. “I had been thinking about killing them every time I get mad. They don’t seem to understand me,” he said to a police officer. The prosecution had argued that Greg should be tried as an adult because the crime was premeditated. “There is no evidence of provocation of self-defense or anything,” said Kosciusko County Prosecutor, Randy Girod.

Your mind is the worst for exazerbating ill thoughts into overwhelming issues that aren't anywhere near what you've built up in your mind. Does it excuse him? No. Did he double down on an action that he thought would solve the issue? Yes. He could of self-terminated, but didn't.

Lack of money for a good lawyer, no money for bond and lack of compassion and hunger for power and fame on the side of judges, detectives makes it worse. Lawyers charge exhorbitant fees and do not do the job sometimes. Been there done that. Sad not getting any visits . Whatever happened to Prisons Ministering by the Church? Is probably eliminated. We as believers have the mandate from the Lord for compassion and empathy for prisoners. "Because I was in prison and you visited me" said the Lord. You do it to my little ones you did it to me. Many coming from broken homes, drug ridden families etc. our mental health system is truly broken because most don’t know how to handle it or address it. Even with people who spend years getting their degree can’t ever know what another’s mind is thinking or enduring. It’s a fine line. Yes much better rehabilitation is needed especially for children entering into the systems & institutions. No key should ever be thrown away from a child. We must try & work hard to protect children & their young minds. I’m sure your parents have forgiven you & love you. There has been plenty of research done recently on the brain. A young person's brain is NOT fully developed until they are around 25 years old. I don't understand why so many on here think this man is not remorseful. I see plenty of remorse in what he says and also some blame as well. Of course our system is to blame to some degree. If his friends knew about it - why didn't they tell anyone?! Probably because that would be considered "snitching", and those with under-developed brains don't get that sometimes one has to snitch in order to prevent serious happenings to occur. No one knows exactly what was going on in his family, but I did hear him giving his parents some very positive props more than blame. I wish the best for him. According to the notes included, he has been out for 4 years now. I hope he has completely adjusted to his new life and is able to do good for the rest of his life. Karen Grau, I knew your husband while growing up. We lived a couple houses away from each other on State St., and he was good friends with my brother Brian. I hope you are both doing well! 🇿🇦🇿🇦 Why did you kill your parents is the question the interviewer should be asking and focusing on . This guy has to face up to his crime and action. He is rumbling too much and trying to put blame on his lawyer , no lawyer can say you will walk after killing his parents . What did he expect , a trophy and a purple hart?
His eyes say a different story , he is a sick person , who this time will be very careful and make no mistakes to get caught , he is going to kill again and kill many and will clean up any mistakes that got him caught last time , he looks hungry for blood , he is talking to the lady but his brain is taking him back there to that bloody horrible scene and he can taste it and is reminiscing it all . This guy was never supposed to be released , something is in his eyes , they are telling a different story and eyes don't lie . Of course he wont come back to prison but that doesn't mean he would have stopped killing , he will commit perfect murders and make sure to make no mistakes and get caught .

He responds to questions in a very general and “broad brush” fashion, e.g “ my parents didn’t understand me, I couldn’t talk to them” ; he does not divulge any original thoughts , insight nor creative ideas regarding as to how he will be successful on the outside. Whilst he is fairly articulate, he shares very little about his interior world with his audience , things , that would help us to understand his journey of “ self” ; nor does he offer any specific strategies as to how he will manage himself with other human beings on the outside.. (i.e co-workers, neighbors, a boss, rude people, people who will judge him or reject him ( for housing, a job ) how to form a friendship, self care etc. He focuses solely on “ out there”.. society , the legalities of his situation… I did like how he speaks about some of the other inmates and some of the guards. Whilst He does not seem hardened , he does not share with the interviewer or the listener as his experience in regards to how he fared in prison. Was he able to insulate himself in prison? If so, how did he do that? I did get a slight glance into his psyche when he was out and about with the driver and how he chose to be mindful and took everything in… the food he was eating, his awareness of how his driver was being kind to him, how it helped him visit his home town.. how childhood memories were stirred up.
As an listening audience member, he does little to convince me how he problem solves, how he takes care of himself psychologically, spiritually, intellectually and emotionally . I have zero sense of his character , who he is, what is important to him, what he cares about, his hopes and dreams.. . I see a mask.
I was not very impressed with the interviewers. One interviewer touched on “ the outside” but he has learned many patterns on “ the inside” how to survive.
I have seen a fair amount of interviews ( to include Piers Morgan) who have sat with prisoners on death row … they asked very intimate stuff ..the questions that were asked really helped the audience really see who the person is. Sadly, that did not happen here. I have so many questions…
. I wish him well.. Good luck

I really appreciate how comfortable Greg and Scott are together, sitting so casually and without stiff shoulders. He seems to have his head straight regardless of the amount of time he’s served or the horrible situation that landed him where he was and at the end of the day his rehabilitation seems successful. I wish him the best life.

@CalamariProductions I am a social worker and a counselor. You have no idea how much your videos help me to show the reality of going the wrong way. Your videos help me to say, "The life you are living it isn't a movie. It's moving toward this,, and then I show one of your videos. Most of them get in shock for what they see. I take my time watching these videos and make them reflect on the experiences you expose. Thanks again for making this happen!

I dont know dude. He seems well spoken but it stands out to me that he only says things like "what happened" which is Very standard for killers not taking any real accountability for their actions. They never say "what I did" . Its such a false transparent apology. sorry for "what happened" it did not just "happen" you did it.

What a great mind. Well excersized. Wise I. Shape a new beginning. If I was a betting man I see nothing but success for him. I mean to all of a sudden have to make your own meals. So many things to think about. I think this was one of the BEST interviews I’ve ever seen. I’m favoriting this and will watch again and maybe again. It’s streetwise living with no real streets. I had to be heartbreaking to a prisoner to lose it on a bad day and get even more time added onto your time. I don’t think or should I say I could not make it in prison. I guess when your faces with it. You deal with it. But I have repaired machines in a federal prison and talked with the inmates. And their lives are not their own. The bell rings it’s time to eat. The bell rings it’s back to cells for the ones working I. The prison print shop. Which is huge. So I know it’s not easy. Freedom is so precious and it only takes one drug or alcohol induced or even just a pent up anger that releases at the wrong time. And that’s it game over. Yet here it wasn’t fake over. It was game changed and make the best of it.

He was two years ahead of me in school. Didn’t really know him. I do know he liked to tell a bullshit story about our teacher stopping him in the hall way for swearing. And that if he had asked him what was wrong his parents would still be alive. Never happened. Prison isn’t for rehabilitation. It’s punishment. And his full sentence seems appropriate.

Just watched till the end. They mention our teacher visiting him fifteen years later. Like he came to see him because he was a good kid. . He spent fifteen years feeling guilty because Gregg said he could have prevented it. Mr Phillips was a great teacher. Great wrestling coach. And all around good dude. Terrible thing to do to someone.

I think Greg's mother ate away at his self-esteem during their explosive episodes at an age he was trying to find his way to manhood. His father gave nothing to show him the way.
He mentioned how close he was with his mother when he was little. After a while, the pain elevates to anger. It was the relationships that caused this. It's not particularly anyone's fault.
1:26:04 We don't always realize the sensitivity of a boy this age. Think of it, if a father chiseled away at his daughter's self-esteem, the pain and anguish it would cause.
Mother/son and father/daughter relationships are crucial to a child's growth to adulthood. The drugs didn't help.
