I understand everything he is saying, my father spent 29 years in prison, I was 1 year 5 months when he was arrested & when he came home I had to teach him how to use a mobile phone, go to the bank, how to talk to people, order food at a restaurant without saying yes sir yes ma'am everytime he talks to them, but one of the most painful things is he secludes himself in his room because that's where he's most comfortable simply because it's a small space.. he goes to sleep at the same time, he's awake at the same time, showers at the same time, it's sad but I always say dad you do you, as long as your happy then I'm happy I love him to bits and I wouldn't change him or the situation for the world

I did 17 years in California, San Quentin and a newer prison in Vacaville. My crimes were considered violent so I was a lever 4 and level 3. In Calif we have 4 levels and death row. I spent my time going to college and doing everything I could to make myself a better person. I left prison March 10 1993. I started a small business and became a successful member of society. It can be done.

Imagine going to jail in the 80s or 70s and spending 40 years in prison. And then coming out, seeing how much society and the environment has changed, it's like traveling in a time machine for him I would assume.

I'm just a young guy from Oklahoma,,but I'd take him in my home if I came across him..I served 2 years for drugs and doing well now. Iv been clean 10 years but I live in a prison i built myself, I dont have friends, I wont date, or go out. Much love ! I hope he has found peace

It's the 40 years he did in there. Kids make stupid mistakes all the time and don't think about how it'll affect them in the long run like going to prison. He's lucky to not be one of the guys who get sent back because they don't know how to live on the outside due to prison being all they know. I hope this video goes out to the teens who fly off the handle and pick fights at school or look to get into drug dealing or murdering someone out of passion because what this man is saying is true. He's lucky to be out 40 years later and not serving life. My prayers go out to him that he stays clean and doesn't do any of the stuff he did again. How can they expect someone to come out after 40 years, and them end up homeless, and expect them not to break the law to survive?
We need to do more for people in this position. Maybe have some program to give them a running start and chance to make it.

But I know a few ex cons who had actually mild crimes, not violent or whatever, and coming out of prison is scary as hell.
My point is... people need not be surprised at the re offending rate when someone comes out decades later to a world that is not what they knew. I’m not saying give them handouts, I’m saying give them guidance. A little kindness and compassion goes a long way.

I rescue pitbulls. Abused, neglected, sometimes damaged Pitbulls. It’s similar... a kind word, some compassion can really go a long way to rehabilitate. Most criminals didn’t grow up in loving homes with guidance and love.
I really appreciate this video. I only did 4.5 yrs and this is a real reminder of why I don't want to go back. It's hard though to adapt to a free society because people out here are disrespectful. You want to hold them to the penitentiary standards of respect but just know they call the police on you and since you are already a felon the shit is going to fall on you. I feel bad for this man but he is alive. So there is still hope. God bless him

For men like this, real freedom after prison can be really difficult to define. This is raw and unsensationalized. Giving men like this a voice should compel us to think about whether it is justice or retribution we want from our corrections system. Really top notch job!

I was speaking more broadly about what our intentions ought to be for the justice system, and also what we collectively mean by justice. Are we trying to rehabilitate prisoners who will eventually re-enter society, or are we simply doling out punishments? I think what we end up with are prisoners bereft of hope and any lacking necessary character and skills to avoid criminal activity after prison. They leave prison as prisoners, and not free people as we might be inclined to think.
Charles Wróbel I agree 100%. It is sad and actually makes me angry in certain cases.
The thing is the ideas here are not mutually exclusive; Ideally we want Justice, Retribution, and Rehabilitation. Justice for the family or person wronged in the crime, Retribution in that you are punished for your crime, and rehabilitation in the sense that you learn from your mistake and don't commit further crimes. Now that's an oversimplification I've given here, but you get the gist.
I think punishment is definitely a component of justice.
This guy should do speaking tours to Jr. High school kids . You know, Scare the shit out of them with reality, when you do the wrong things in life. It only takes one wrong move or decision to end up behind bars for years & years

This dude reminds me of my pops who was in and out of prison in the 70's and 80' in NYC but eventually died in 1990. The prison and street life has no happy endings. You either die or become an old broken and lost soul.

It’s as true as it gets. Sadly, I’ve got friends and family doing life upstate that I will never ever see again. My mom’s good friend (family fried) has been in for the past 10 years in a level 6 max as well in solitary. He is locked up for 23 hours a day. He is doing life. Prison is killing him. He’s really sick, doesn’t sound at all like himself, and I can only imagine how his head is feeling. The worst part of it all, he has a little girl who isn’t even ten yet, and she has only met her daddy once.
AquariaGeek it’s real out there man. Can’t imagine being locked up or in solitary....one of my boys caught a case in 2007 when he was 27. They got him down for 36 years....crazy
This guy is a great communicator and shows a lot of intelligence. He seems to have been able to convert his prison experiences into genuine insight and conveys them clearly to the listener. Just goes to show...a lot of smart, bright people all over the world that have the potential for all kinds of achievements and satisfaction, but end up on a dark path and pretty much shut 99% of the doors on themselves.
At this point, Danny seems to have found a certain kind of peace, in spite of the life-changing brutality of the prison he was in. I'm sure life remains difficult, but respect for where he's at now.

Some of the young generation need to actually go to prison to learn something because they won't listen to a dam thing.
Funny thing is most people think that Inmates in Prison or Jails are disrespectful, trash talkers but it's the polar opposite. In Prison, or Jail you will have the MOST respectful people you've ever met bc in their you can't be disrespectful or you'll get your ass smashed out by other convicts, or even the CO's. After I did my 7 yrs, I didn't realize how rude and disrespectful the general public really is. Within the first week after getting out I almost took off on several people just for not holding the door open walking out of the gas station. I stopped this one guy getting in his car bc I felt disrespected, just bc he let the door at the AmPm close on me, knowing I was right behind him. He had no clue what I was talking about, but I could see him trying to read the tats on my eyelids, throat, neck etc while I was talking to him, eyes wide open. I realized at that moment that I needed to chill out or I wasn't going to last long. I feel like everyone should go do at least 5 yrs in a Max Security Prison right after High School, like Pre-College bc the world would be very different if everyone knew how to act. There's no running ur mouth off, or even raising your voice to another man in there. The second you start to get loud you're gonna taste metal, and start coughing up teeth. Yelling is Telling!
@@David..832 back in 1990 I was in grade 10 and we had a scared straight afternoon where we visited a major police station lock up in Sydney, there was also a prison officer from a prison as a guest speaker. That was enough for me to be on the straight and narrow for years ahead which I'm glad. I'd hate to end up in prison.
@@tefllife2024 It's not something to get used to as a lifestyle for me but with the way things are going and my stance in beliefs, the idea of being locked up again won't deter me from resisting against the coming government tyranny. That being said, I'm sort of thankful for the time I've done because it taught me some things and it won't be a big shocker to go back if I'm threatened with prison for whatever reason, I'll just leave that to the imagination.
My only brother has been in prison since 1995 when he was 16 years old. It has been 25yrs since his conviction. Lord willing he will be out in 1-2 yrs. I am trusting the Lord will give him a second chance and I will be here to help him adjust to society and my parents are at still alive when he is released thank you for this channel 😀👍🏽

My brother who is serving prison time (25 years this past August) called me last night. And to tell him his mom past away and his reaction on the phone will always live with me. I'm an ex con, with 3 sentences, totalling 3 years. I went through the Scottish Prison system at 17. I ended up in HMP Barlinnie, Glasgow. I thought it system was fuct but the US system is disturbing!!

I’m a female , I did 3 years in Prison of a 6 year sentence, I fought my case 13 months in pre-trial and did time in 2 institutions before being sent to fire camp where my sentence got reduced to 35% time . Those places change you forever , it’s a dark world with angry evil , envious people. (My crime was mortgage fraud) so a square like me would get picked on and I had to fight and get respect (so I’m not seen as weak) . One of my cell mates was a lifer who had been locked up since 1989 , I slept with one eye open because she always said evil shit. I can’t imagine being locked up so long and not losing your mind. This guy is strong minded and I admire his strength. Even though he did do something that put him in prison, I’m no one to judge . Being in prison is truly worst punishment imaginable. Much respect ✊ Danny! I pray you are doing well 🙌🏼💖. You look great btw . Hope you find happiness in your freedom . The first thing I did was go to In-N-Out 🍔🍟🥤 when I got out

I can’t imagine what he’s going through, literal hell and he survived so I hope he enjoys his life on the outside.
I work as an inner city ER nurse. When these guys get out after 20-30 years they don’t know how to function & they often end up in the ER within the first couple weeks for one reason or another. I have had the opportunity to have long one on one conversations with several of these guys. It’s fascinating!!! & terrifying. You can’t just walk up & put your hands on them like you would any other patient. They are programmed to perceive that as a threat. It’s surprising how willing people are to share their experiences if you treat them with respect.
I wanna know more about Danny. His life seems so interesting and rough. Like ik hes older but are his parents still around? What ever happened to his uncle from prison? Does he have any communication with his family? What are his plans for his future? How was his childhood? Did someone in his family die while he was incarcerated and was he able to attend the funeral? Was he together with his baby mama while in prison? If so did he make the choice of letting her go and living her life or did she leave him because of so many years?

I've personally never heard of anyone being allowed to get out to attend a family funeral. When your inside life goes on outside. All those Christmas, thanksgiving, birthdays, kids grow up, parents and family die, meanwhile you rot away your youth. It's just reality of prison. I only was in a few years but it was a life changing experience and an eye opener
