Back - Story of the Song: Bjorn (Guitar) wrote it. After the Divorce of Agnetha ( Singer) . Abba startet as Band. Both Couples got married and Divorced. And still played together for few years. Great Band. Love them still.
Back when this was recorded there was no such thing as auto-tune. This is pure unadulterated talent. ABBA is one of the most famous bands of all time.

IN 1999 they released Abba Gold. a greatest hits album & their music got a new life with the Mama Mia movies too. The name comes from the first initial of each of them.

Here is something you might not be aware of. When this song came out, she either was going through a divorce or had just went through one with the purple suited guitarist. They remained friends. They just couldn't live as husband and wife. They are still friends to this day.
It must have been so hard for her to sing about something so personal, and recent in her life, AND, at the same time, keep such grace while doing it.

A real depiction of a breakup that was rooted in reality... inspired by their own divorce in Abba - Agnetha and Bjorn...
They started as any couple who met and fell passionately in love and got married - he was a musician/ songwriter, she was a pop singer... His friend was also a musician who fell in love w/ a female singer... At some point, they wrote songs together and decided to have their women sing their songs in the studio, and Abba was born. The first pop group w/ 2 couples...
As it happened, the couple welcomed a child and life was good... the group found themselves performing on national television and their records were selling ... In 1974, Abba won the Eurovision contest and got signed internationally... In 1975, the group has a hit record internationally and offers to tour start pouring in...
That was when the pressure started building... Agnetha wanted to stay home w/ their child and feels torn when her obligations put her and her husband on tour, whenever they are not in the studio. By 1976, Abba scored a massive global hit and become international superstars by 1977.
Agnetha becomes a sex symbol and is not happy w/ the attention and scrutiny that global fame has brought her... She and Bjorn are fighting in the studio as pressure to make more hits takes its toll... At home, they are barely speaking. They try to save their marriage by having another child... but it only can help them so much... In 1978, just as the other couple (Benny and Anni-Frid) finally tie the knot... Agnetha and Bjorn decide to separate; they commit themselves to being parents and to work professionally as Abba, going into 1979... Abba is more popular than ever, but the toll of touring also begins to wear on Benny and Anni-Frid's marriage... In 1980, the group records a new album, but refused to tour any more.
'The Winner takes it all' was on that 1980 album 'Super Trouper'... it captured all of Bjorn's (and Agnetha's) pain and disappointment in the outcome of their marriage and the end of their love story.
Bjorn would remarry soon after (So would Benny, after he and Anni-Frid split up by 1981) ... Agnetha would not marry again and would spend years of her life in solitude after a string of ill-fated relationships. Thankfully, the members of Abba mended their bonds as a musical group, decades after they parted ways in 1983.

People have mentioned that ABBA was a disco group but ABBA transcended that genre. Every one of the members were brilliant in their own way and their songs stand the test of time for a reason. Brilliant pop song craft!

Agnetha had such a powerful voice! Fridas voice complimented Agnethas so well!!! Her voice was lower and husky.... kind of raspy. She didn't sing too many as the lead singer but there are couple and she does have a beautiful voice! I think Agnetha is the only one that just stopped performing altogether...for like a decade! She stayed completely out of the music business.....she said she didn't even listen to music!

it is not about Their real life, although it is obviously influenced by Their own experiences and the realization of the legal divorce between Agnetha & Björn in the middle of 1980, even though They were no longer a couple or lived together more than a year and half ago, at the end of 1978

No, how they're dressed in the video was by choice, not necessity. They wanted to be presentable, it was about self respect.
But trust me, as I grew up then, there were plenty of women then who made their careers more on their looks and bodies than actual talent.
It's nothing new, just more common and alot filthier now.

They are in the league of Bee Gees, Temptations, Queen(Many would argue Queen is a level below ABBA), ABBA's just a little below Beatles level.
They are UNTOUCHABLE and their music is immortal.
I often listen to them and since I grew up in the 80's and early 90's, their music is part of my life. (Yeah I listened to Gangsta, R&B, Hip Hop and stuff like this, Cranberries etc growing up - I have diverse taste :) )
My first girlfriend loved their music even more than me.

Using women and objectivefing them in the industry has been around since the industry started. It just wasn't openly discussed as it is now. They'd be out of work instantly and made to blame. Women act like the do now because it's been the standard for so long and sex sells especially today. I hear men complain how women use sex and their looks to get what they want and bring nothing worthy to the table. Yet on their social media all they have are half naked women all over it. Wth? Sending mixed singles much? The very men who complain about it are the same minds that created it.The worst is when women blame each other. We have to look at the picture as a whole and how we got here. Think back to when you were younger. How well did you treat yourself or the other gender. Society had you acting a whole different way. Then look at yourself now. It took a minute to be the you you are today. Well that applies to me anyway. If I could go back in time I would have treated myself better.
