I have this tv but from 2004. It still works great. Mine does have hdmi so we still use it for now. Not super clear picture and does use a LOT of power though.

I have had a KP-53HS10 for a while. Got it used. It worked fine. Something went wrong, still has a picture, but it is very bad, distorted. I may scrap it now, but I also heard it may be easy to fix. Might just need a bulb replacement. But I am thinking it probably is not a bulb issue. I guess I'll start by opening it up. It is not worth it to have some professional fix it.

there is a gold mine of components on the chassis capacitors , transistors , resisters ,chokes , transformers , mosfets , regulators , inductors , and so on , don't just toss the chassis . they can be reused when building other projects ,the crt's can be used ,the magnetify glass can be reused for other things .lot of goodies there .

Hey there, I just got rid of my old Sony RPTV from 2001, as of this date its 20 years old. I salvaged the same front lens to make a solar scorcher, which you mentioned and, i seen on King Of Random way back. And I found out the hard way, there is coolant oil behind the colour lenses lol. but the main lenses make great fire starters for outdoor survival. The quality Sony put in these was amazing, considering RCA used only a plexiglass sheet with a mylar wrap for a mirror. I can imagine the hydro bill difference, Running three mini crt tubes that powerful.

I also made a solar scorcher just like the King of Random. In fact, I had to dismantle it because I left it unattended in the back yard and it burnt the grass on accident.

Those are actually mini CRT TVs shining through coloured lenses the CRTs are just a black and white image the three images combine into one filling out the colours. The screen is a rear projection screen so the screen takes the image from behind where in a movie theatre that’s front projection. The images displayed on the mirror are backwards so when the mirror reflects the image back it’s the right way.

The little sensors are for the auto-convergence, the sqishy-things are expansion cups for when the glycol coolant/coupler fluid heats up. Sad to see this TV being scrapped but at least there was some education involved for your kid to see the insides of this old technology. Next time he will see this kind of a TV it might be in a museum.

when you transport one of these sony rear projection hdtv is it ok to lay them down in order to get them to fit in an suv? will it damage anything or will you be more likely to knock it out of focus?

Has anyone tried using hdmi to the dvi-d. If so what kind of picture quality do you get. Is it better than the component input?

Any rear projection TV will be terrible compared to any recent technology. These were likely 480i.

It sounds like something on the main board has gone bad, most likely a capacitor. Capacitors are simple to replace if you know what you're doing.
Unfortunately, these TVs are so old, diagnosing and replacing parts will be difficult if it goes beyond capacitors unless you want to pay someone hundreds of dollars. At that point, you'd probably be better off buying something newer.

Hi there, can you please tell me if the mirror is a rigid one or a stretched film? I want to but one of these to get the mirror out (it's much higher value than what people sell these old TVs for) but I don't want to buy a model that has just the film streched on a frame. Thanks if you actually get to this comment. :)

    • @FixUntilBroken

Most of them are simple glass reflection mirrors. Some of the nicer ones have the mirror coating on the front-side of the glass.

There is some liquid optical coupler (a mix of propylene glycol and glycerine) between the CRT and the lenses, this is what the rubber cups are for. Spillage guaranteed when you open them, do it in a tray or something ! I have a video in which I drain a similar setup: th-cam.com/video/mQbXZxLcqtY/w-d-xo.html

    • @FixUntilBroken

Thanks for the info. I was going to do a follow up video to take the cathode ray tube assembly apart and it would have been a mess with the fluid leaking out.
