  • This is a teardown of a single tube from a rear-projection tv. This TV was taken apart in this video:
    • Sony Rear Projection TV
    This tube has some kind of optical fluid that appears to be water-based. I call it oil throughout the video because at the time, it looked and felt like mineral oil.

    This was helpful to see. Just tore apart an old Hitachi 51S715 that had sat unplugged in my basement for 6-8 years. Because teardown was the only way to get it out of the house. Based on this post, I've chosen to stop at removing those lenses and loading up all the electrical innards hoping the local eWaste recycling will take it all. I'm hearing some places don't want to take them if the (Hitachi) glycol coolant is still in them.

      Had a funny weird outcome of the liquid solution, and I don't think it was toxic at all....took it all apart just for the fun of it, outside in a field, and when I got down to cracking out the 3 sealed units, of course not to touch the liquid with gloves on...and had let each of them drain on the grass, ok...that done, and scraped everything in the trash. So after awhile doing something else, elsewhere....came back an hour or so...and low-and-behold, right in the spot where all was drained, there were at least 100 Purple Butterflies in a small circle in a feeding frenzy...so amazing, and right away got my camera, and what incredible pics I got. Then as an after thought, was thinking, "Did I just by accident, might this possibly create a mutant butterfly?"....I didn't see any fall dead, and after a day some still came back. It's something you'll just never forget!

    The liquid used to cool and refract light in the three lenses is called "Trioxin" and was developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.....

    The fluid is optical grade ethylene glycol. Same as anti-freeze, except high purity and very toxic and a skin irritant.
    Also, theres no xrays emitted even at full power. Theres safety circuits that prevent xrays. HOWEVER! Only the tv manufacturers were subject to strict rules. So if you have a tv that has had a cheap Chinese generic crt replacement lamp put in it, they didnt care and were not subject to those standards. So a generic lamp could produce radiation in the xray.
    I know this is old but I see people get hurt all the time from taking apart things they know nothing about. So hopefully my comment will save somebody, or somebody's animal that licks up the liquid :p

    The lens you took out is Cyan, not Blue...this is from an early Sony Projection set, the set used only 2 lenses...a Cyan and a Magenta - Dichroic mirrors were used splitting the Cyan into Green and Blue and the Magenta to Red and Blue....it produced a good picture, but not very bright.

  • @supermarioisacat

    Damn man, that was painful. Try to do some reading first next time: The three CRT tube colors are: R, G, B, and they're under a high VACUUM, not pressure. If cracked, they will violently implode spraying glass shrapnel everywhere. They also behave as giant capacitors and are capable of storing a charge of 10kv+ for WEEKS or MONTHS after being disconnected.

    • @jacobmartin3765
      @jacobmartin3765 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just short the caps with a screwdriver and then all power is lost and then safe to work on. And vacuum is negative PRESSURE

    • @supermarioisacat
      @supermarioisacat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jacobmartin3765 A bit pedantic aren't we, captain obvious? Any negative pressure (below atmospheric) is clearly a "pressure measurement" and the term used to describe that is a VACUUM. Positive pressures (absolute or above atmospheric) is simply labelled "pressure." Any questions?

    I have taken apart all that but much larger. That means regular TV tubes are much bigger.
    I have taken out all them coils of wires. They are easy to remove.
    The tube itself is fully sealed and very thick. Did I say thick? To go that far you have to really go out of your way, meaning you have to grab a sledghammer. They are just about bullet proof. They are n They were designed and they have to be totally tough and in a sealed environment.

    Why waste time making a tutorial about something of which you know nothing about? I just again blew out & vacuumed the dust and cleaned the lenses on my 14 year old Panasonic PT- 53x54j projection tv and it's good as new again. Also do the same with my 25" GE console which still works.Hope my new flat led"s do as well. Maintenance is the key to longevity with everything. Eyesight went bad so last year sold my 1958 Ford T-Bird I rebuilt in 1983. Drove it from Wyoming to Cape Cod, Ma. 4 times w/o problems. MAINTENANCE!

    • @FixUntilBroken

      Thanks for taking the time to reply. This was not a tutorial on how to fix a rear projection tube TV. This TV was found by the side of the road and is considered an ancient piece of technology from many generations ago. I read your comment a few times and really cannot tell if you are joking that you are still running one and a 25" GE Console TV.
      Anyways, you can get a new LED TV that is 90% more efficient for the price of the parts to fix any older TV, so there's really no reason to try to fix it.

    • @cruisernet
      @cruisernet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It only emits x-rays when electrically charged not radio active by itself. I still wouldn't not attempt to power it up unless I knew how to safely do so. X-rays would go off all over the place. Not to mention the tube itself serves as a capacitor that why it has a bleeder cable coming out of it to slowly release the charge remaining in it.
