- My NEC XG110LC projector had a glitch and the eerom lost all the settings for convergence, focus etc. Starting from scratch is quite an involved process so I thought I'd do this vid to show people I've talked to about the projector.
This is also my first time recording a voiceover. I think it went OK, but let me know. There was no script or plan to any of this.
I'm so sad that crt development stopped when lcds gained in popularity. i wonder what technology could have come to in the 30 something years we haven't had crts
At least we got some amazing Plasma tech from Pioneer with their last 3 or 4 gen Kuro plasmas displays, the 9th generation Kuro got within 75/80% of CRT image quality, had near CRT motion clarity too, and that was with 50/65/75 inch full 1080p sizes, so not to shabby. Yes CRT still wins, especially for gaming, but for movies and some 1080p 60Hz console gaming, a Pioneer 50" or 65" is amazing.
SED & FED was the true CRT successor though, actual tiny CRTs in a dense matrix (in a nutshell) to produce a large CRT flat-screen in 50/65"+ sizes, had all the usual perks of CRT plus many advances, including higher luminance for even brighter highlights, greater colour range, higher resolutions and so on, we would have had 120Hz+ 4K SED/FED displays by now, Imagine a Sony FW900 quality 65" TV that can do 4K or even 8K and true HDR @ over 120Hz with perfect motion, I can only imagine what 8K with CRT grade motion quality looks like.
They made CRTs up until like 2008 but I get your point, I wonder that too.
@@Wobble2007 OLED clearly is on par with CRT IQ, it even suffers from the same screen burn problems !
@@retrogamingbureau Phosphor ware has no bearing on the IQ of any respective display technology, CRTs from 1992 onwards, are virtually imposible to burn-in, it can be done, but you really need to have them on 24/7 for 9 to 10 years or more to force any noticable burn-in, QLED LCD displays suffer from dirty scrren effect (multi burn-in and damaged screen uniformaty) worse than OLED does, which has been shown in multiple 2 year stress tests of OLED vs QLED, OLED is at te point where its only posible to get burn-in if you go out of your way to get it, but even when doing this, it takes over 3-4 years to get any noteworthy burn-in, and PHOLED, aka 2nd gen phosphor based OLED which is due out in 2024/25, will be complely image retention proof within normal use (gaming/movies/TV/desktop/etcetera).
CRTs are still miles ahead of any consumer display technolgy, hopefully Tandem PHOLED will finally change that, current OLED doens't come close .

any sort of display calibration is just so enjoyable to do or watch. It's so rewarding to see how good of a picture you can get out of a given display.

Check out the old Mitsubishi crt projection tv it folds up into furniture to keep the lenses safe!

I didn’t know the quality of these projectors was so high. I’ve yet to see one in person. I also love watching stuff on CRTs and use them extensively in my art as well. OLED does finally win though. That infinite contrast ratio can’t be beat. I definitely don’t like LCD or most LEDs, the amount of light bleed is just unpleasant
Such a blast from the past. I had an NeC XG too. I was part of a CRT OZ group who used to chat about CRT projectors daily. I converted mine from 110 to 240v after importing it from the US, and I converted mine from air coupled to liquid coupled. Good times.
You don't realise how much the backlight ruins modern projector picture until you see this, that picture looks stunning would be great to see what some sci-fi movies would look like on that set up
and I thought setting up my Mitsubishi UD8400U venue DLP projector was aa pain. It never occurred to me that CRT projectors existed and I am in my early 40's. This was really educational :0)
Wasn’t aware of these projectors until today. Beautiful. Hopefully some day I will own one.
I still love plasma technology. A good plasma like the pioneer or Panasonic is still a phosphorus-based technology and it’s pretty good but obviously you can’t get screen sizes like you can with your projector

The issue with the blue color is likely due to a buildup of lime and rust inside that tube, called "CRT fungus". If you remove the liquid inside the projector and slosh around some cleaner, it should solve that problem.

Hey Mate. Andrew from Victoria here. I'm a 62 year old gay guy. I say that only because I sometimes forget to proof read my posts. I look 40 or so I'm told. I used to love adjusting convergence etc in the clubs I worked at....I'm an ex DJ Audio/Visual Engineer. These monsters were great for Michael Jacksons Thriller and other dance etc. The 70s, 80s and 90s were the best. Now weve got bugger all. I love Marilyn Manson. The Fight Song is my favourite. OLED TVs still have terrible motion blur because they are sample and hold, and same will be true for microled. CRTs and plasmas still have the best motion.
The old stuff works so much better.
I wish crt projectors were still being made, but obviously in a smaller configuration, because they certainly had kickass picture quality...👌👍
I'd love to see what would be possible with quantum dot phospors in the tubes and the latest technology controlling the beams :)
Used to have one like this. Amazing devices. I wish I had kept mine but as a young man 20 years ago I didn't have the space for it. Good job aligning it. I remember spending many hours doing the same thing. BTW, get some LCD shutter 3d glasses and watch it in IMAX style 3d. Pretty spectacular. Try that with a DLP

CRT projectors are wonderful machines . They feel and look honest, against big led screens. Won’t bother with a single lens projector unlesss I’m viewing a recording process that accentuates
CRT Projectors are one of the sexiest pieces of technology in existence. Definitely something I want to own some day. I wish CRT's in general never stopped being made. (I know 1 or 2 companies still make them )

Man, Its crazy how fiddly that process is, I guess you just have to reach a point of diminishing returns and accept when it's good enough.
I usually tweak it a little bit before each watching session.

This was weirdly interesting, and what is the most interesting to me is, these days you set up a projector and it does everything autonomously, and in the 90s you had to set it up for 2 hours.
These would be perfect for retro gaming, I really need to pick one of these up

Hi mate, what state are you in? In QLD here, also have an XG LC, but i converted my 852 AC into an LC with a set of LC tubes i bought from Craig Rounds about 10 years ago. You can play light gun games on these projectors!!
I have a couple NEC spares sitting here, but mostly for the NEC PG sets i have.
I notice youre doing astig on blue with the defocus switch turned on, turn it off and get the blue razor sharp first. The astig in the corners and the edges should be done with the focus set sharp, not defocused.
The NECs are capable of the absolute BEST convergence of any CRT projector, it has a massive amount of settings that will allow dot perfect convergence even at 1920x1200.
Ditch that HD-Fury and run RGB straight from your PC, that is going to give far better image quality unless you can get a MOOME internal HDMI.

Hi! thanks for the detailed reply :) I tried to play light gun games, but I think the light output was simply too low for my given screen size, and it refused to work at all.
I have a roof full of spare parts, just at the moment it's sitting there with a cracked blue tube due do a horizontal deflection board failure. I want to do a full rebuild on the unit and probably make some vids about the process, so it is currently on hold.
Good find on the blue defocus! I was in a rush and just wanted to make watch some movies so I no doubt made heaps of silly mistakes. I normally tweak it a bit each viewing session as it always drifts a bit with the weather.
I was running RGB straight from the PC but the NVIDIA drivers were giving me absolute hell with interlaced resolutions so i gave up and went to the hdfury and it worked far better. Anyway, that 980ti finally gave up the ghosts and no card worth installing has analog output anymore.
Very jealous of the Barco. A dual Barco setup would be insane!

The screen size will certainly impact the ability for lightguns to function correctly, but your best bet is the Namco G-CON 45 and G-CON 2, they tend to function very well on an XG, we have spent many a night here over the past 15 plus years having Point Blank battles on everything from a Sony VPH1001-QM to a couple different NEC 9PGs and then the XG. The downside to the Barco Cine 9 for retro gaming is that it starts at 31kHz, so i have to use the XRGB-3 to line double it. The good thing is i can dim every second line so it cant be seen from the lounge, but still adds brightness to the image. The G-CON 2 still works if i use the component cable to get a 480p signal in.
The XG is without doubt the absolute most capable set when it comes to convergence and geometry, and although the Barco Cine 9 is vastly superior to previous Barco CRTs, it is a massive step down from an XG in that regard. The 9" tubes are quite bright and those lenses give super sharp focus compared to the ones on the LC XGs. I had HD-144 lenses on it when it was AC and those were razor sharp.
The biggest thing that causes drift on the NECs is were the deflection yokes plug into the top side of the board, slide those big plugs off and clean the pins up nice, it can help with the drift.
The idea is to set the machine up in such a way that minimal corrections are required, and your setup there with your screen up higher is PERFECT for this, center your rasters on the tubefaces, then lower the rear of the machine so it points at the middle of your screen. You will use a lot less keystone, you will use a lot more of the tubeface, it will be more stable, and it will also give you better lens focus in the corners. It wont take much to drop the rear down a bit, the brackets on the projector mount to just forward of the middle to make this possible.
VDC in Florida used to have stock of new tubes for these, but i believe they have since ditched them. Greg Eisemann was still able to have a set made last time i contacted him, but as always with Greg, prices were quite high.
I had a mate in Vic that did run a stacked setup with two Barco 909s, but he had a few issues with drift and eventually took them out of service due to a HV failure and no parts left. Although the Cine 9/909 has full digital convergence output and that part of it doesnt drift, there are still a bunch of analog adjustments on the V-output board and those DO drift!
I want to move to Tas when i retire, which will be a few years away yet!
I give you a lot of credit. Not a fan of LCD outside my high refresh (165Hz) monitor. But…. Man…. I use a DLP front projector and a 55” plasma as my daily drivers. Watching that insanity- I’m happy to have moved on. Both plasma and DLP have excellent motion handling. Minus the RBE of DLP, of course. But I feel like that’s countered by CRT flicker. Honestly: OLED is still sample and hold and still has motion issues. It’s not as bad as LCD due to the much faster pixel response. But blur is blur.
I think for overall quality CRTs are still best too when they are well setup. OLED is good too but not reliable enough yet, that's why they still don't make OLED computer monitors.

A tip to set the lens focus is to bloom all out and look for the phosphor sands to show up at close up. 2person needed.
I could spot the grain by eye, but i often used binoculars to make it easier.

Where was this video when I was too chicken to set up my Dwin HD700 I got for free, that I let someplace borrow before they promptly threw it away. Now I'm trying to find something else similar again after getting a Sony HD CRT. I never knew how much I liked CRTs for video until I had a sharp one that scanned above my range of hearing (the SD CRT whine gives me a headache)

Modern projectors are brighter and have a higher resolution. I think laser phosphor projectors only use the laser as a source of white light - I'd love to see one that scans the phosphor like a CRT does!
CRT projectors strongest points are the black levels, as they are the only emmissive type of projector available; and the motion resolution, due to them producing the image as a scan, rather than by peak and hold. The final factor for me was the cost, this cost me about AU$300 used, whereas a used digital projector I'd be happy with runs about 5k. I think the lifespan of a CRT projector with new tubes and a laser projector would be similiar.

It is indeed a shame that scanning has gone out of style, but I was hoping that with laser phosphor we would at least get the brilliant colors back that we once enjoyed. Single chip DLP is just horrible in that regard, and although I appreciate the color of my LCD projectors, those have horrible blacks (or rather grays).
Apart from size, availability and calibration (as you so kindly showed), this does sound like the ideal projector for my taste. The ability to render any resolution at zero latency makes it even more futuristic. And light gun interaction to top it off. Amazing stuff!!

I love CRT Monitors and was just wondering if there were Projectors... A friend of mine is looking for a Beamer that has a great immage, good Blacks and low latency... I was like (in my head, talking to myself) that sounds exactly like a CRT... Its a shame there are no CRT Projectors... OR ARE THERE.... And that's how i ended up here...

That camera focus causes headaches

Its actually a KV-HR32 here in Australia. I also own the kv-hr36 now.
What's the resolution of this projector? It sounds like there are various supported aspect ratios and resolutions, but from 1997, I wouldn't know what content someone was used on it.
I run it at 1920*1080 96hz interlaced. As it's crt the resolution is only limited by the scan rate of the projector. In reality, it 1920*1080 isn't fully clear so I'd say it was about 900p if i had to define it. What is cool is it will scan down to 320*240 at 60hz/15khz and show kickass scan lines
Originally they were used in simulators at fairly high resolutions. Max resolution in the manual was around 2500*1500 but I imagine back in the day they would have used a lot lower. I believe there was a 1080i laserdisc format around that era though.

Better colors, contrast, and response time, but no 4K (for the most part). It... depends on if you are O.K. with that trade-off.

240P games throw really awesome scanlines. Unfortunately it died (Cracked blue tube, suspect broken H scan board too) so I can't demonstrate.

@@TurnerTVOfficial I feel you. I'm running Marquee 9500 Ultra with HTPC. Loving the picture, but when it craps out I've got no clue where to upgrade as good digitals still cost so much.
@@hollacarrot179 I have the parts to repair, but I want to do a full overhaul and cant bring myself to. I know anything other than a DILA will have awful blacks so I can't do the cheap digital either. In the meantime I have a sony KVHR36 propped up on the coffee table in there lol

Good for you. Way to take something useful and turn it into a massive pile of useless parts.
Browningate it was useless before i had taken it apart. The old hunk of junk was used in our family lake cabin, one day while some family was using the cabin they turned the tv on and apparently it made a loud noise and it wouldn’t work anymore. The plan was for the tv to just go to a junk yard but i had other ideas. I looked into it and was surprisingly lucky to have it in such a good condition based on the circumstances. It was outside in the sun and in the rain for about 3 weeks. I tried my best to salvage as many parts as i could i got the tubes out safely, i have salvaged some capacitors some led indicator lights, some other bits, the speakers, and a transformer. If I hadn’t dealt with the thing, that would have been the end of those crts so yeah i don’t like to think i took something that was working, i like to consider it more like salvage the parts i would never be able to work with ever again in my life as a 17 year old. I also gave the dam thing another chance to actually work. So now that you are a bit more updated, can you please redact the sarcastic praise?

Not good! Only problem I've had with mine was loosing the settings. You could try checking out the curtpalme forums for a solution, these are meant to be very serviceable.
Now play games on it!
