As I understand it, The Beatles released "There's a Place" in 1963 and within a few months The Beach Boys released the very similar feeling "In My Room".
Brian Wilson and the writing duo Lennon and McCartney were mutual admirers often seeking to emulate one another's creative mastery of the craft. "In My Room" is reportedly Wilson's attempt to match the mood of that Beatles tune in his own style.

Brian Wilson was the genius behind The Beach Boys. He and his brother came from both a musical background and a violent and abusive childhood at the hands of their father. When Brian, who wrote and composed the music, was a kid, his dad once slapped him so hard in the head that it left Brian partially deaf in one ear. Today, Brian is recognized as a true genius among fellow musicians. The Beatles had always considered The Beach Boys their greatest “competition”.

Certainly God Only Knows and Wouldn't it be Nice are two of the best. Their longevity as a band is amazing and there are so many different periods in their music to sample. Although refered to as a Theremin, it's not really technically a Theremin, which would be controlled without actually touching it, and requires a very specialist technique to play it properly. The one used on 'Good vibrations' may sound the same, but it was an 'Electro-Theremin' and it's pitch was controlled by turning a control knob.

It took Brian Wilson six months of studio time and about ten times the cost of a normal 45 record to get this on wax. It is pieced together from countless multiple sessions. Music historians consider "Good Vibrations" to be one of the best-composed songs in the history of popular music. The primary songwriter was Brian Wilson, who was famously obsessive.
The band recorded over 90 hours of music for this song, then distilled it all down to the three and half minutes that you hear.
It was, at the time, the most expensive song ever recorded, in terms of studio time and resources.
Also, the "alien vibes" comment by Amber was a great call. The instrument you're hearing there is called a Theramin synthsizer. It was used in old sci fi movies to make spooky noises!

By the way, the instruments were played by "The Wrecking Crew," considered by most people in the industry to be the BEST group of studio musicians in music history. They played on hundreds of top-40 hits in the 1960s and '70s, beginning with Phil Spector's "wall of sound" in the early 1960s (songs like "Be My Baby").

Like Good Vibrations, the Beach Boys' music has been used in a lot of soundtracks, here's a few. "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Kokomo", "Sloop John B", "Help Me, Rhonda", "God Only Knows", "Don't Worry Baby", "In My Room", "I Get Around", "I Can Hear Music", "California Girls", "Barbara Ann", Surfer Girl", When I Grow Up (To be a Man)", Catch A Wave", The Warmth of the Sun".

Most in my generation grew up with their parents playing the Beetles. My folks were into the Beach Boys so to me this is my childhood. You must go to "Only God Knows" Paul McCartney's all time favorite song.

"Surfin USA", was released in 1963, right at the beginning of their career. It was a simple re-tooling of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little 16", and probably took a couple of hours to record. A classic of it's genre. Good Vibrations came out in the autumn of 1966, and in that brief time period, the Beach Boys music had come on leaps and bounds in terms of complexity of arrangement, instrumentation and lyric content. It took 6 weeks to record and cost $50 - 75000 dollars, (God knows what that would be in todays money). Like their friendly music rivals the Beatles they were on an incredible and rapid musical journey. That weird instrument at the end is a Theremin. Its an electronic instrument that sets up an electromagnetic field and the sounds are created by moving your fingers and hands between two antenna. You can actually buy them. Great reaction.

Surprised no-one has mentioned it, but the "whoo" sound during the beginning of the chorus is made by an instrument called a theremin. It's a instrument played by manipulating magnetic waves and has been used in MANY horror movies since it was first invented many years ago due to its eerie sound. The Beach Boys and other associated bands were fascinated by the psychedelic effect of sound waves.

Brian Wilson was the leader of the band and the genius who wrote and produced most of their early recordings through 1970-71. It's amazing that he was deaf in his right ear and yet was still able to record and mix clean stereophonic tracks. Allegedly his abusive father caused his deafness since he was known to beat his kids when drunk. Brian claims it was a neighbor kid hitting him in the head with a lead pipe.

This song was recorded many years after" Surfin USA". Their sound had greatly evolved during those years and was much more sophisticated sound wise. Surfin USA was one of their very first recordings. If you like these more involed songs listen to God Only Knows" or Wouldn't it be nice"

You should try and watch the documentary "The Wrecking Crew" some time. It's all about the group of musicians who played on so many hits of the '60's, including this one, which featured Carole Kay, one of the very few female bass players at the time and who came up with that killer bass line in the intro of this track. It also makes a great double-feature with "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" about the musicians who played on almost every hit on that label, including James Jamerson, one of the greatest and most influential bass players of all time.

Carol Kaye was one of the very first electric bass players. She pioneered a lot of the sounds and techniques still used today. BTW, the opening bass line on Sonny and Cher's The Beat Goes On was her creation. It was common for studio players to contribute lots of parts to recordings that they were never recognized for.
She was an already established jazz guitarist in top SoCal jazz bands and was asked to become a studio guitarist first, playing on many hit tunes of the 1950s, then as electric bass became a thing in recording, she took up the bass and really explored that.

"Surfin'" was their first single. "Good Vibrations" is what as known as a "Perfect Song". There aren't that many of them. Brian is the MOST brilliant musician of all. There is NOBODY at his level not even John or Paul.
