  • We're sailing The Solent with Dick and Pat Dawson on Lone Wolf, their stunning 1905 Ashton & Kilner 26ft cutter. They talk about their 3 year restoration, the joy of owning a small classic yacht and we get a private tour of the bathroom. Copyright: Bob Aylott myclassicboat.com Music Green Obs. How very lovely to see partners grow older with a wooden friend for life. Well done Dick & Pat and thank you for sharing your ongoing story of sailing folk.

    Owning an old classic timber boat (Vertue) it warms my heart to see a beautiful restoration such as Dick and Pat have carried out. Well done from Oz.

    Enormously cool little story,wonderful couple .. and in fact I believe this tale deserves to be untitled, Pat and Dicks Story,for they provide such a true account,one more about how couples can team up to enjoy their boat,maybe more then the garden back home.

    What a wonderful story of a wonderful boat and awesome couple! Thanks so much for keeping this gem alive. My partner and I have a 1966 Tom Gilmer cutter from Astilleros Carabela and can so relate to your tales! It is so very true: these wooden boats have such soul, no matter how many parts are replaced! Cheers!

      and where is your boat moored?

    • @scottyg9167
      @scottyg9167 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She’s tied up in Vallejo California, north SF Bay Area, tugging at the lines to go out for a sail in today’s perfect breeze.

    I love your wonderful spirit Pat and Dick...restoration is a hard job and I went through something smaller than yours some time ago and still I am now building a pilot cutter and what you say is exactly the truth...but going to sea is stronger than any other emotion in life so there we go...thanks for sharing

    Lone Wolf is very like the boat I learned to sail on. Crimson Rambler was a gaff cutter that I sailed on as a Lad in Southampton water and the Solent. Watching your video brought back loads of wonderful memories.

    Congratulations for having the courage to see this project through and not giving up in exasperation ! All these wooden boat stories put me in mind of the old story of Theseus's ship. By the time you've finished, do you still have the SAME boat or a different boat ? How much of the original boat remains.....? Could you, for example, gather together all the "old" pieces, reassemble them and recreate the same original boat ? Which boat would then be the 'original', the 'real' boat ? David Hume wrestled with this 'problem' of identity in his famous Treatise. What do you think ? What do your aching fingers think....your checkbook ?

    Thank you for this video. I have been a subscriber for some time and had to write in to offer my appreciation to you for showing a better way.
    I am looking for a boat to live upon after backpacking the world for fourteen years non-stop. I'm leaning towards a steel hull for strength on my adventure's, yet I may change tack towards a wooden classic like the beauty Pat and Dick Dawson have lovingly created. Something about keeping history alive tickles my soul. The essence of purity found in these classic boats and the elegant workmanship shines through your videos and lightens my heart.
    Knowing people like the Dawson's are on this earth, and waters, makes me feel that all is right with the world.
    Thank you for the visit, looking forward to your videos in 2018.

    Hi guys. Loving your videos. I'm new to sailing and just been offered a 26ft sloop wooden boat from 1966. She's in superb condition and been excellently maintained over the years. A few people are telling me I'm ma buying a wooden boat and will spend more time maintaining her than actually sailing lol.
    Wondered what you guys think on the matter. Be fascinating to her from you. 👍

    Really encouraging to see a yacht of similar vintage to mine, restored sympathetically and practically. Some of the shots of the structural work inside could be Flamingo! (www.justflamingo.com) Exactly the same issues with wrought iron floors and frames needing replacing. I can't wait to get to the stage where I can fit out the interior and hope I make as cosy and inviting a job of it as you have.

      Agree - that wretched pup's screechy barking used to get me every time, so now I turn the sound off until that bit's over.
