Found this purely by accident - know nothing about yachts, sailing. What a refreshing change.
Now I've retired I hope to be able to find the time to take some lessons and jump into a dinghy.

Words can not express how much I enjoyed these 30 minutes and 31 seconds! What a magnificent Vessel and a splendid presentation!

I saved this for Christmas then saved it again due to CV 19.MkII.
What a present, really. I didn't know you skippered this vessel. Loved the booze run to Spain - just down my particular street that trip. Even today I could find you a crew to do it again.
But the joy of the sail. I know you bang on about the lines but its just a great vessel that we took from the French and then made even better.
You met some of my mates from Maldon when you sailed on the Cambria, I've sailed from there for 30 years. You must see their new toy, the sailing barge in service Blue Mermaid, she is carrying cargo - its a story to be told.

I can't agree more. She's a beauty, and thus she deserves passion, which is flawed by money as we know.
I remember meeting Jolie Brise in the harbour of Castro Urdiales, just in that trip to Spain for wine. It was sitting at anchor when we arrived from Getxo in our boat and we thought it looked very complicated and we guessed it should be very difficult to handle. We were just surprised to see her weighting her anchor under sail and leave the harbour under full sail, including topsail. Amazing how those brits did. I also still remember the club launch at Club Marítimo del Abra full of boxes of wine. I was just as surprised as how much those brits drank.

I have a small painting on my wall right now done by NED Phillips, one of the young crew on the wine trip. It is of the Templars' church at Castro Urdiales. Truly wonderful memories. Ned and I are still in touch. He went on to sail the oceans in a fine old wooden boat with his family. Tom
6 months ago I bought a model sailing ship for something to do while not working. I went on TH-cam to find some tips on modelling and instead I discovered Tom Cunliffe! What magnificent videos they are. Just a joy to watch. Thank you so much!

People know me as stern and not very talkative. When I sail they are amazed how my whole personality changes and only joy and carefree passion on my face as though a load has been lifted off my shoulders- it has; the boat working the wind lifted it all! Designed to free the soul. I see in your face Tom, the ages peel away and a young man emerging like a dolphin on the bow wave! Thank you for getting me back on the boat with this wonderful presentation of Jolie Brise!

Another amazing film Tom you truly have a special talent my friend, you bring joy to us old salts and inspiration to those yet to set sail.
During my time at Dauntsey's in the eighties I spent two wonderful "tours" of Brittany on this amazing ship. First with skipper Mike van Leowen, his sister Lily as bosun (and my first crush) and her fiance Oscar. I was probably 15 or 16. Next tour a couple of years later Pal, another reggae loving Dutchman was skipper and I remember sailing towards the Isles of Scilly in some serious weather, only Pal and I were on deck and Jolie Brise was flying under her storm jib and trysail! Next stop, Royal Navy, but I will never forget that night on the way to St Mary. I've experienced much rougher weather on a Destroyer, but it wasn't as much fun as on the mighty JB!

As the American writer Emerson said “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”, and enthusiasm certainly powers Tom’s storytelling to greatness.
Now when the two captains started talking I felt like a child in a room of grownups, but that was OK, it just pointed out some things I need to learn.

Hearing you say how she changed your life reminds me of my fathers tale - one day, famous East Coast smacksman, Dick Norris, insisted he come for a sail aboard his Whitstable smack, 'Stormy Petrel' and he was hooked. Went straight out and bought the 'Thistle' and then once he completed her rebuild, moved on to the Thames barge 'Edith May', which ultimately led to the establishment of our company 'Tiller & Wheel CIC'. From that one sail with Dick, my whole family's life changed forever!
That was a great story and great video, very inspirational.
Dropping the pick though, I saw a coastal coal carrier in Black Wattyl Bay in Sydney Harbour do that many years ago. The ship had backed up the harbour, empty, away from the dock and attempted to do a power turn into a following wind. When side on, the wind took the bow of this quite large ship as it was way up in the air. So the Captain dropped the anchor to pin the bow to let the stern swing around to about 45 degrees. The Captain then raised the anchor and powered forward swinging the stern around as aggressively as he could, but in the very narrow bay this huge ship came with in a few feet of cleaning up a whole row of timber carrying barges and some yachts anchored to the shore. It was a truly exhilarating sight. That ship some years later caught fire between Wollongong and Sydney, to end here career as a burnt out rusting hulk.
Third time I see this video and each time I regret we can only give one thumbs up.
Seeing this I made “whiskers” for our 10 feet bowsprit also.
you describe the sensation of running 40 miles in four hours and the exhilaration of it. I know just how you feel and the memory. I crewed for NZ Army in Navel whalers 27 foot displacement boats as a young man. In one memorable race which we won handsomely we beat up the Rangatoto channel in the Auckland harbor to No 1 buoy, rounded it and ran before a fresh northerly wind all the way down to bean rock with the plate pulled, all sales gull winged and the largest spinnaker we had up. The crew all in the aft of the boat to pick her bow up and the hull hissing for the next hour or so. It was without doubt the most thrilling run I ever did and 40 years or so latter I can still close my eyes and see it as if it was yesterday. So yes I do understand.
Most beautiful pilot cutter I’ve ever seen! Grand! Just dropped by to watch again. It popped up after I watched your west system video today. No one can narrate or give tours or lectures like Tom!

I spent a blissful 6 days aboard JB about ten years ago with a party of my students. What an absolute joy it was. She is a magnificent boat. Many thanks for bringing back happy memories.

Well that was just the most wonderful film. My eyes are moist with tears. I loved the point where the crew turned her downwind....and I loved the Rioja story....and everything in between. One of the best films I have seen on TH-cam. How you managed to record such perfect sound is quite beyond me. Really, well done, this is why I watch TH-cam and not tv. Tom, I totally love your videos....thank you so much for creating them, they give me such pleasure.

I sailed a wooden yacht from New Zealand to Thailand between 2011 and 2014. She is a 12 ton Gauntlet built in NZ of NZ native timber. We sold her and she is now in the Med in the care of another owner. I had owned her for 16 wonderful years and lived on her for 9 of those years as we cruised through SE Asia.
I can identify absolutely with this glorious video. Such a treat to see it.
Once you have lived on a boat, particularly a ocean going one; that is it. Nothing else will ever match it and you will always feel the draw of the ocean. Because it is freedom.
I have owned your "Hand Reef and Steer" for twenty years now, despite the fact that I have no cutter to sail, but parts of it have served me on my lug-rigged dinghy. I've been looking at it again lately and it is so great to see the operations described in the book illustrated in video. Easier than trying to imagine it in my head!
As a divorced, homeless poor man, videos like this are magic. A man like me dreams of breaking free of misery and sailing into freedom. What a dream. Thanks.
P.s. I want to give props to the sound guy as well. Interviewed on deck while sailing and the audio is crystal clear. Amazing. Hahahha

Don't give up on your dream brother. I too have lost family and child and have yet to fulfil my life's dream to sail the seven seas, to circumnavigate the world in a trimaran, my ultimate favourite boat. Keep the dream alive.

How I wish my father (same name as me) was alive today. He's been gone for many years now but loved his boats despite being a farmer in Kenya and later South Africa. He would have so enjoyed your yarns, Tom and would have related to many of them. Ah well, I can enjoy them for him.
Love boon furling, our old yacht had an Oregon pine boom and a brass rolling mechanism that worked fine and served us well for many years. With the old system the whole boom rolled and the sail went around the outside, we took the battens out as they reached the boom, adjusting the topping lift to get a tight even roll. Magic.
Boundless platitudes are not enough to say thank you - may be the best sailing video I have ever witnessed. Big up Tom and crew!

I sailed as a student aboard R/V Westward and she changed the direction of my life. But then the five years I spent restoring the barque Elissa, made an even greater impact on my life. These classic old vessels are just so special.

Really enjoy your videos Tom. The way you talk about gaffers and wooden boats in general is how I have always felt about gaffers and square riggers. Everything about them, the smell of hemp and stockholm tar, the sound of rain or the crew pattering around the wooden decks, the rush of water under the bow, gives me chills to think about. Cheers.

Fascinating.....Appreciate this rendition......Coming to think of it.... in 1953 ( this is some 67 years ago ) Four twenty yeas ( plus) old's took a 30 foot catch ex German pilot boat(built 1922)
And sailed her half around the world ( 12752 ') What remains = memories....

I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this wonderful ode to a great ship. It makes me miss my days sailing in the Caribbean, so many, many years ago. There are few things in this world more wonderful. It is the definition of freedom.

Loved that Tom, a joy to behold. Imagine what it would take to build a replica of such a vessel today, even if we could afford too? Such craftmanship has all but been lost and 'the kids today' have little desire to learn such skills. Sad to have seen so many old wooden ships rot away to nothing, in the creaks of the river Blackwater, .during my dinghy days at the HBCS. Have a safe winter Tom, you and Ros. Graham.

2,500 ft2 of sail and no winches! Definitely not a boat for single handed sailing but a true beauty with the right crew!
For what it's worth, we routinely sail her three handed, and occasionally two!
You've opened my eyes to these old wooden boats, big, solid dependable beauties. Haven't got a clue about sailing so half the terminology used was complete gibberish, but man alive I want a go on that. Thank you Tom.🍻
